Eccl 1: 2-112 “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”3 What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? 4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again. 6 The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles. 7 Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea. 8 Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. 9 History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10 Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11 We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.The question what is the point is what we ask ourselves every day. The question what is the point is really a “why” question. A “why” question, in the sense that mere asking the question what is the point, you seek to know why we have probably done something. It may not necessarily be used for something you have done in the past, it could be used for something that you intend to do i.e what is the point of going home this weekend? So the point gives you a reason why and then a call to action which determines the direction you will take or vice versa. You cannot take direction away from reason as reason determines the direction you take. They are almost inseparable. The reason why a man going east will take the direction to the east is because he is going east. It is common sense and almost obvious but what happens when you are going east and then take west. As obviously stupid you might think this is, it is more common than we think because a lot of the times we do not think before we embark in a particular direction (i.e take certain steps). The point is the reason (why) you follow a particular path, the point is what determines your destination. The point is the reason, the direction, and the destination and they cannot be separated. From the opening scripture, you can guess the question that would have led to this thought process is, what is the point of life? Or why do we live? Solomon’s conclusion was that It is meaningless (futile, pointless, aimless, empty, hollow, vain, purposeless, motiveless, valueless, useless, of no use, worthless, trivial, trifling, vacuous, unimportant, insignificant, inconsequential, insubstantial, nugatory, fruitless, profitless, barren, unproductive, unprofitable). Solomon was the wisest man of his time, something he himself spoke about if you go down to verse 16 of the opening verse . Have you ever been lost before? Walking along a road, for miles and miles trying to find the way but you could not find the way to where you are going. The reason for that is you have taken a wrong turn which obviously means you have reasoned in the wrong manner (made a bad choice) which led to a wrong direction and then a wrong destination. One bad choice, one bad turn can lead to a wrong destination. The question on what the point is asks or answers the question why, where and the way. I will call it the three inseparable W’s. The reason being that when you know why you took a turn, then you must have thought about where it leads to and at some point thought about where this step or direction might take you. If you know the way, I am sure not going to ask you where you are going because in my first question which must have been along the lines of do you know the way? I must have an idea of what way I am talking about and you knowing the way means that you have an idea of how the destination looks like. The question beckons then, why did Solomon say that life is meaningless? The simple reason is because he did not know the way, the truth and the life. John 14:6 says; Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 10:9 says He is the door. I don’t know what a door means to you but a door means you are “home” but not quite until you see your bed. The fact that you have gotten to the door does not mean it is time to sleep. Someone who sleeps in front of the door even in his own house will be mistaken as a beggar. You have to take the extra steps of walking to your room which the Christ has prepared for you (John 14:3). You must work as faith without work is dead James 2:14.Since reason, direction and destination are inseparable, attacking one of these leads to killing the rest. Reason can either be good or bad. Having a bad reason will ultimately lead to a wrong direction which in turn leads to a wrong destination. God through His word has given us the perfect reasoning process but the killer, stealer and destroyer (John 10:10) comes to steal the word which we are yet to understand Matthew (7:24-27), stopping us from living a life that identifies with Christ. It is important to know that in the world we are in today there are many things which can steal God’s identity which He has given through Jesus Christ. There are many things that want to make us not even think of the point (John 10:10). The devil is constantly working, keeping our minds busy with all sorts, by so doing keeping us from reasoning on what life is really all about. We must strive to understand our Identity in Him and the only way is via the word of God.
