I was diagnosed with MS in 1996 (relapsing-remitting) adult onset. I have tried to be a faithful Christian all my adult life, but this absolutely pulled the rug out from under my existence. I went through all the batteries of tests, and the MS scarring was increasing. I overcame the fear through prayer, and I began attending MS support groups. In 2010 I began to have mild tremors and was given the additional diagnosis of Parkinson's after completing the tests on my brain's dopamine levels. Lucky me. I still had working years ahead of me and a couple kids in college... and I was more frightened than I have ever been. My diseases progressed quickly, robbing me of the ability to work and finally bringing my wheelchair bound, pain ridden body to the point of being a few weeks away from needing to reside in Assisted Living.
My wife and I went to our church and she left me in church while she went into the church office. I prayed to the risen Lord to make this all go quickly, because I couldn't handle the pain it was causing my wife and family. I just wanted to be called home.
The next morning I awoke with no pain, no tremors, no symptoms at all. I assumed it was the proverbial 'rally right before the end' and was grateful to God that all this was almost over and I was looking forward to being called home. But I'm still here, MS scarring free and the dopamine levels in my brain have returned to normal. No medications, no symptoms, only profound gratitude for the miracle healing Jesus has gifted. even my neurologist and my Parkinsons specialist agree it is nothing short of a miracle. If I wake up tomorrow and HE has seen fit to regift the MS and Parkinsons to me, I will forever be grateful for the years HE has given to me and our family and will continue to sing praises to HIS name for each and every gift, every moment and every opportunity to serve HIS children!

That is an absolutely amazing, beautiful story Larry73.

I have a somewhat similar story to tell except mine is psychiatric instead of medical.

From the year about 1990 to about 2005, I suffered from extreme, unrelenting, suicidal depression that sent me from emergency room to psychiatric ward to home and back again like a revolving door every two weeks like clockwork. This cycle went on continuously for about 15 years straight.

Then, in 2005, some amazing things happened: my father apologized to me over the phone for all the sexual abuse he perpetrated upon me when I was a youngster, (an apology I had been begging him for over the years); also, I fell out of love with my ex-husband, (he had been a major reason for my depression); and at this time, I was reading as many ancient medieval books written by canonized Catholic saints as I could get my greedy hands on (I believe that I FOUND HAPPINESS within the pages of those books!!) And another thing that happened in 2005 was that in that year, I was confirmed a Roman Catholic.

I believe that all these different things combined brought about my complete and permanent release from suicidality and indeed depression, ever since.

My prayers are with you my friend... and with your mom. Please tell her not to lose hope. MS is a difficult diagnosis, and to me it seemed to be 'one step forward, three steps back'. But early on our Pastor and I had a heart to heart. My marriage was suffering because my attitude following my diagnosis was atrocious, and I complained all the time. My Pastor, who we knew well, told me this:
Larry, I want you to pray daily THANKING GOD for your diagnosis... and honestly, I thought he'd lost his blooming mind! But then he went on ..... 'sometimes God hears our prayers before we pray them. In this case, if it had been your wife or one of your kids receiving the MS diagnosis, you'd be on your knees every day begging God to let it be you instead. God knew that prayer in your heart, and he allowed it to come to you." That moment changed my life, and no matter how painful, embarrassing or hard it became, I remembered to thank God several times daily for the GIFT of my MS. The prayers continued even after the duo diagnosis of Parkinson's, and the only thing other than gratitude in my prayers was a request to make this all progress quickly because of the emotional drain on my family. But as I said above, HE had other plans....
I don't know what the good Lord has planned for your mom, but I do know that offering the pain as a sacrifice and thanking God for the gift of the opportunity to do so can change everything.
Be loving, be supportive, and never let her go even a day without the encouraging words that you are proud of her strength and let her know that she can lean on you just as you leaned on her as you were growing up! Remember, HE gave us the ability to smile to remind each other what heaven looks like!
