I was hearing the other day 2 persons and one of them told something good about the other one, but thay guy didnt want to accept it, he said "no, no, im not intelligent, im just like other ppl" and to be honest i dont think he is the most intelligent, but i wonder why he didnt accept the compliment.

Do you accept any compliment from other person or you only accept some kind of compliments or you never accept compliments?

Is it bad to accept a compliment?

What does bible say?

Nothing wrong with accepting a compliment if it doesn't go to your head and you forget the reason why whatevers being complimented, is being complimented. I.e. Because God has blessed you. Nothing wrong with not accepting compliments either.

If we accept compliments , that's fine, milady, but just don't let it make you haughty.

As is said, I think it's in scripture, but it is said: Pride comes before the fall.

Here is some scripture of what can happen IF one does not humbly accept a compliment...

Proverbs says in 16:18 : Pride goes before destruction and a haughty Spirit before a fall.

I guess that kind of echoes my earlier-said cliche, pride DOES come before the fall.

But giving compliments is good, in fact, I think it can be said the offspring of a compliment best benefits the person who gave it.
Proverbs 16:24 : Pleasant words are like a honeycomb., sweetness to the soul and health for the bones.

When you receive a compliment, you should give all the glory to God because of Him we have life and are able to do the things we do.

Galatians 1: 23 And they praised God because of me.

1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Philippians 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Psalms 69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Maybe he was just trying to recieve the comment with humility/humbleness. I guess it really depends on how the compliment was stated. If for example someone told him "that was a great idea!" The polite thing for him to do is just say "thanks." But if someone told him "Hey that was an amazing idea! You are a genius! You must be the smartest guy in this room!" He would look sort of full of himself if he just said "Yeah, thanks." So he tries to divert the attention by saying "no, no, I'm just average, blah blah blah."

I think both giving and recieving compliments is important, its a way to support and encourage one another. If you see someone who deserves a compliment (ecspecially for something they did, rather than how they look...though those are nice too...) let them know it. :)

Most likely he genuinely just doesn't believe it. No reason to really complicate the issue.

I think its a bit selfish not accepting gracefully a compliment even if it sounds farfetched to you unless its a really inappropriate 'compliment' or sleazy pick up line.
But for the complimentors who are genuinely sincere in their nice comment to you, they are being encouraging which is totally given the thumbs up in the bible and shooting them down for no good reason, is telling them that their offer to encourage you is worthless and that is selfish.
There have been many moments in my life when I was having an absolutely horrible day and out of the blue someone gave me a really lovely compliment, and it really made my day and made me feel really encouraged. And I think the world would be a much nicer place if we had more genuine complimentors and more humble and graceful recievers.

What am I then, green chopped liver?

Lizzytheone, I gave you some versicles too :D

LOL Green

Thanks for the versicles, I apologize if I didnt mentioned you, I always appreciate your posts :)

I think that versicle Proverbs 16:18 is very important, it makes us put attention to what we do everyday because all what we do have consecuences.

That remind me of all the books out there in bookstores and conferences of non-believers about "how to be succesful in life", and when i see verses like that or Proverbs 16:24 it seems so weird that many times the way to be succesful is just in front of us in a book that was written since many years ago.

Accepting compliments is not bad...however flattery can become dangerous .Our ego tends to get fat when we feed ourselves with too much flaterry and we don't have the humility necessary to accept good critics. Every good gift we have comes from God, we just gotta remember that and not let ourselves boast about them :). I think denying we have gifts at all offends God, we are supposed to glorify him with them after all. There are boundaries.

To be honest sometimes I get a little shy when I receive compliments and sometimes I get a little awkward when trying to respond to them.... I just try to be polite, say thanks, smile, and move on :).

What matters to me most is the subtext. There are humble people that accept compliments because they have an honest appraisal of their skill set and are, at the same time, willing to chalk it up to God or others who helped mold them. Then of course there is false humility in which the person in question believes they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and decides to knowingly reinforce this notion by feigning meekness.

I try best to give everything I'm assaulted with an honest appraisal and hope I tread the line well between honest knowledge and brazen self-
adulation.

I don't accept compliments well at all. Not sure why. It's awkward. I usually find myself quickly saying thank you and changing the subject.

I agree. I like this post.

I tend to be fairly free with compliments if I see or appreciate something about a person. It does no one any good to just hold onto them.

There is a flipside though. Some people will give false compliments just to try to make the other person feel better about themselves. I am against that. The intention might be good, but it's still a lie. I only give a compliment when I truly mean it.

The only compliments i really accept are the ones from people who really know me. The others i usually take it with a grain of salt. I mean i say thanks, but it doesnt go farther than that.
They make me feel uncomfortable as well.
