Some people say, on the one hand, that we are to have faith in the Lord. On the other hand, they say the Lord will send most people to be tortured forever. It doesn’t seem to me both statements can be correct.

If you want my opinion, I think the correct statement is that we are to have faith in the Lord.

That doesn’t mean the Lord doesn’t discipline us, but I think the purpose of the discipline is to influence us to repent of our sin.

They are both true. The bible is clear that there are two teams, those who have faith in God and those that don't. Those that choose Satan instead of God, are going to Hell. Read 1 John and you will see that those who live a life of sin are of the devil. If you do not choose God you choose Satan.

if you do not have faith in christ then you do not have the one thing that can save you from eternal punishment...
