So, why parables? Many Christians believe that Jesus' parables helped to better understand His message. This would be incorrect, since even His disciples never understood most of them. Our Savior's parables was earthly stories with Heavenly meanings, but that never made them any easier to understand. Jesus explains that these Divine truths wasn't given for all to understand, but only revealed to those who have a desire to learn them. It is unfortunate that many Christians lack the desire to learn the mysteries of God's Word.
Matthew 13:15-17 In the beginning of this chapter, Jesus sits by the sea side while a great crowd gathers around to listen to Him speak. When the crowd gets bigger, Jesus then went onto a ship to speak, probably for the large crowd to hear Him better. The disciples came to Jesus after the crowd had left and asked Him why He spoke in such a way as parables? ** Notice that it is only after the crowd had left and they were alone that Jesus explains why, Matthew 13:34-36, "Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it is not given." In the book of Ephesians, even Paul admits to "mysteries" revealed to him and those who have a deep desire to know truths.
2 Timothy 3:7 Those with "dull hearts" and no desire will never fully understand truth in scripture, "he that hath ears to hear, let him hear."
To those with "dull hearts and ears" parables are both judgment and mercy. Judgment because it keeps them in darkness which they want, and mercy because they had already rejected the truth, so anymore exposure to it would only increase their condemnation. Jesus spoke in parables to teach the truth to those willing to hear and conceal it from those who had no desire for it.
"A principal that will never fail in keeping Christians from spiritual truth is.....condemnation before investigation."
God bless!
