When we believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, we receive the promise of the indwelling Spirit. The Holy Spirit indwells us and fills us instantly by faith. We may have an experience to indicate such a filling and we may not, however, either way God has kept His promise and we are filled with the Holy Spirit through faith. Baptism and filling are pretty much the same thing. Whether we are immersed or filled with the Spirit, the results are the same and it all comes by faith.

The purpose or being baptized or filled with the Spirit is given to the believer for the testimony of Christ in the believer and for the work of the ministry. The only evidence of being baptized or filled with the Spirit is the fruit of love that we have for God and one another. The gifts of the Spirit are separate and do not indicate or substantiate being baptized or filled with the Spirit, even though we may operate in the gifts of the Spirit as a Spirit-filled believer.

If you want scripture verses on this, I would be glad to give them to you.

Thanks Red but my question was mainly aimed at people who believe in a seperate baptism apart from salvation. However if you have scripture that disproves this stance then please share :)

Well in Acts we see various, post conversion, initial fillings of the Holy Spirit marked by various signs or non-signs..

Here are examples of post conversion, initial fillings of the Holy Spirit in Acts.

Acts 2:4 - Tongues

Acts 8:14-16 - No mention of some visible sign like tongues.

Acts 9: 17-19 - No mention of some visible sign like tongues.

The below scriptures it's hard to tell if these are purely post conversion baptisms in the Holy spirit or not.

Acts 10: 44-46 - Mentions tongues as the sign of reception.

Acts 19: 4-7 - Mentions tongues and prophecy as signs of reception.


Given the numerous examples of a post conversion initial filling, given the fact that every portion of scripture is useful for instruction, given the fact that NOT ALL post conversion, initial fillings are described with having tongues, I would feel comfortable asserting that there is some kind of post conversion infilling of the Spirit we should seek but it's not always marked by tongues.

Yes, it does not specifically say tongues, but what did Simon see?

Red33: In the Bible, believers were BELIEVERS FIRST, BEFORE THEY RECIEVED THE INFILLING OR EMPOWERMENT of the HOly Spirit. Being born again/saved and being baptized in Holy Spirit/empowerd from on high as in the Upper room, are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS....available to All you believe, but separate. Being baptized in Holy Spirit is NOT necessary for salvation.

From what i gather from scripture,(and personal experience) the Holy Spirit is NOT automitic at Belief, OR baptisim in Water.

"And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. ... ... On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.”(Belief/Water) Acts 19:2 & 5

"And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying."
(recieving the Spirit/baptism of the holy ghost) Acts 19:6

Beleif is first, then there is the FIRST baptism, THEN there is receiving the holy spirit. two seperate things.

Then there is being FILLED with the spirit. A Third different baptism, of FIRE.

Again:

Receiving(this is after the Apostels had the water baptism, they are NOW receiving the spirit)
"And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit." John 20:22

NOW somthing NEW is the FILLING/OUTPOURING(which starts the sanctification...the FIRE...the purging)

"When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:1-4

So the Apostles received the spirit FIRST, then were FILlED.
Two sperate occasions.

Maggie: Where is your biblical evidence for this? And how does one receive the second 'seperate occasion' and what happens to you when you do?

Deadflesh: Thank you for providing verses :) Im almost convinced of your points, but I still wonder how I can get the baptism of the holy spirit, what would happen to me, what i could possibly receive, and the difference it makes?

Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. ( Luke 13:24 )

God has a path that leads to life ,before we even start this journey ,we must qualify by being born again.this experience consist of repentance (death to or will /a change of mind ), birth of water (baptism) and birth of spirit ( Holy Ghost ).

You must be born again-

Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. ( 1 Corinthians 15:50 )

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ( John 3:5 )

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. ( John 12:24 )

Repentance -

But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ( Ezekiel 18:21 )

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ( Luke 13:5 )

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. ( 2 Peter 3:9 )

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? ( Romans 2:4 )

Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you. ( Jeremiah 26:13 )

Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

Born of Water -

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
(1 Peter 3:20-21 )

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:16 )

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. ( Luke 7:29-30 )

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. ( Acts 2:38 )

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, ( Revelation 1:5 )

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. ( Matthew 26:28)

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16 )

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: ( Matthew 28:19 )

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ( Acts 4:10-12 )

Born of the Spirit -

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ( Acts 2:1-4 )

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: ( Acts 2:16-17 )

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. ( John 3:3-8 )

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. ( Romans 8:9-11 )

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
( Acts 1:4-5 )

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ( Acts 2:4 )

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. ( Acts 2:39 )

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
( Acts 1:8 )

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ( Romans 6:2-4 )

When we repent ,are baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins and filled with the Holy Ghost we identify with Christ 's death ,burial and resurrection.

Yes, it does not specifically say tongues, but what did Simon see?
Yeah like I said. No mention of tongues. So I'm not going to read that in to the text. That's add-egesis.

Let me clarify my previous statement, because it could be read wrong.

I DO BELIEVE that someone receives the Holy Spirit once they believe in Jesus.

Ephesians 1

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.


Still with Acts and the enormous amount of evidence indicating some post conversion event, it's just hard to write off what I see in Acts. We can't ax away Acts and act like what we see repeated in there doesn't exist.

So to sum it up. Based on the ephesians verse above I believe that once you believe in Jesus, you do have the Holy Spirit. But also, because of the enormous amount of evidence in Acts, I also believe there is some kind of post conversion infilling that may or may not be marked by speaking in tongues.

The answers to the questions ive been repeating throughout this thread and desperately seek answers too. How do people receive the baptism of the spirit? What happens to us nowadays when we get it? How does it change someones relationship with God? Do we receive anything by getting baptized?

I believe that whatever you're going to receive, it all happens at the moment you are born again. The moment a person acts on Romans 10:9, he is born again, saved, sealed with holy spirit, baptized in holy spirit, endued with power from on high... I think all those terms are synonymous.

In 3 of the 5 conversion records in acts, it specifically says they spoke in tongues. We know Paul spoke in tongues, so that handles Acts 9. And as I mentioned, Simon saw -something-. (yes, it does not say....)

There are nine evidences, or manifestations, that a person has the gift of holy spirit within. These are listed in I Cor 12. The manifestation is given to every man for profit.
