There is much confusion over this term " freed from sin" in Romans 6 which if not looked at correctly will lead to all kinds of strange doctrines that deny the work of Christ for salvation and actually create works-based doctrines of men which are actually against Christ's work on the cross, burial, resurrection and ascension.

In order to understand Romans 6-7 ( and then finally chapter 8 where the Spirit comes in ) we need to understand the difference between "sin" and "sinning".

Not knowing this leads to all kinds of doctrines like this "sinless perfection" one that some try to promote in that they never give in to the flesh and sin ( the verb ). This false doctrine will upset the faith of the young Christian and really in the end promote turmoil in their minds and upset their faith.

This will also create a works-righteousness mindset instead of a faith-righteousness one that is completely fixed on Christ's completed work for the believer.

We will always have the flesh with us and anyone that says they never are "sinning" have a very low opinion of the holiness of God and are only thinking of the "biggie sins" which they don't do.

Malice and slander and things like these ( Gal. 5:21 ) are just as destructive as living a homosexual lifestyle.

There is a difference between sin the noun and sinning the verb. Set free from sin does not mean set free from sinning entirely the rest of one's life.

Sin the noun has been guaranteed in the flesh which is why the Holy Spirit circumcised our hearts ( where He lives and is joined as one in the spirit with us) from the body of flesh.

Romans chapter 6 and 7 uses the noun "sin" 48x times ( which speaks of the law of sin that is in our flesh ) and only once as the verb which is the action of "sinning".

Here is what Vine's describes this "law of sin" that is in the flesh - acting through the members of our body when we yield to it.

"a governing principle or power, e.g.,
Rom. 6:6; "(the body) of sin," here "sin" is spoken of as an organized power, acting through the members of the body, "

Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

The set free from sin ( the noun ) is relating to not having to be subject anymore to the flesh because we have been sealed in our spirit in our inner man in Christ. - the new creation in Him.

The law of sin is in the flesh and will be there until we leave this earth. Romans 7:19-22. which is where we are not "in the flesh" as Paul says in Romans 8:9 : BUT "in the Spirit".

Colossians 2:11 (NASB)
[SUP]11 [/SUP] and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;

Now we are to walk by the Spirit so that we will not fulfill the flesh to do "its" desires. Romans 6:13

As our minds get renewed to the truth of Christ and what He has already done for us ( such as we are now the righteousness of God in Christ ) - the Holy Spirit transforms us and we live a holier life.

This is all God's work but we participate in it with Him. ( sometimes this is also called the saving of the soul which the mind is a part of )

There is that name it and claim it "right thinking" and "right knowing" false teaching of Joseph Prince. You cannot "right think" yourself as born again of God's Spirit and saved. You cannot "imagine" yourself as chosen and anointed of God, God does the choosing and anointing and the sanctifying and the empowering by His Spirit, it's not "thinking yourself" that makes you perfect, this is all nonsense false WOF teachings. :)
G-man says.....

"Knowing" that we are not condemned in Christ "releases" the life of the empowering grace to transform us. It's all about Christ! It's His fruit being manifested in us!
You cannot just "right think" yourself 10 foot tall. But if God made you 10 foot tall, then you would know for sure you were in fact 10 foot tall because it would show, and be a reality. Same with ceasing from sin, you cannot "right think" yourself free from sin as Joseph Prince suggests. But if Jesus Christ truly makes you free from sin, then you will in fact be free from sin, and it will show and be a reality. :)

"Right knowing" and "right believing" about the finished work of Christ is everything in the true Christian life.

The fact remains that it is "in knowing" truth about Christ which includes that fact that Christ is our righteousness that our faith becomes effective.

Philemon 1:6 (KJV)
[SUP]6 [/SUP] That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by
the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

This verse shows that it is in the "knowing" that we were crucified with Christ that we are not under "sin" anymore. When we were raised with Christ -
He made us righteous in Him.

Romans 6:5-7 (NASB)
[SUP]5 [/SUP] For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,

[SUP]6 [/SUP]
knowing this,
that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;

[SUP]7 [/SUP] for he who has died is freed from sin.

The whole true Christian faith is based on right believing based on the finished work of Christ.

( or we could create a new religion based on what we do to maintain our own righteousness but it's not from Christ )

Being born again of God's Holy Spirit is what saves and empowers us, not "wishful thinking". You can think yourself "perfect" as Joseph Prince teaches, but if you are not, it is just "wishful thinking." :)

InSpiritInTruth said:
It is also written that this faith that is given then establishes the righteousness of the law in us Romans 3:31 “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Romans 8:4 “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
First off, to jump from Rom 3:31 to Rom 8:4 as if the point of Rom 3:31 has anything in common with the point of Rom 8:4 raises flags in my mind.

So, I looked at both verses in the context within which they were written.

Romans 3:

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

We see that the purpose of the whole section was to point out that it is through faith that one becomes righteous before God. All who believe in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whether Jew or gentile, are justified by faith.

And as proof, of righteousness by faith, Paul uses the example of Abraham and his faith. The conclusion is that there is no grace to the one who works for the reward (Rom 4:4). Those who believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness (Rom 4:5).

--------------------------------

Romans 7:

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

I love the question in Rom 7:24 who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

And the answer in Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

That is the deliverance. The Lord Jesus Christ is the only way we are delivered from the body of this death. And the word "through" (Rom 7:25) is the Greek is the word diá and means across (to the other side) to go all the way through.

Then we keep reading concerning those who are in the Lord Jesus Christ ---

Romans 8:

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Notice Rom 8:3, the law is weak through the flesh.

We know from Rom 7:12 that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good

We know from Rom 7:14 that the law is spiritual.

We know from Rom 7:22 that the inward man delights in the law of God.

But we are weak in our flesh and that holy, just, good, spiritual law of God stands in stark contrast to the feebleness of our flesh. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the law. Our problem is we are weak in our flesh. So, according to Rom 8:3, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.

What does it mean to condemn sin in the flesh? It means that God, through His Son (Who was without sin), broke the deadly sway of sin and put an end to its power in our flesh. But the end of the power of sin in our flesh only occurs as we remain in our Lord Jesus Christ. If we leave Him, we again experience the motions of sin [which] work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death (Rom 7:5).

Aww shucks. And here I thought we were all gonna get along for a change........
Nah, He likes to bait. Post something which sounds good. And although we know he does not even really in perspective believes what he posts (if Grace does empower us to good works, then everyone shown Grace and saved would do good works. And salvation could never be lost) Which of course, We know he does not believe, He says grace powers. But then in the same breath, He claims a child of God who has been given the grace that powers, may not do good works.

its an oxymoron.. but for some reason, They are blind to see it (that's why we laugh when they open these threads..

So You are sinless right?

Oh wait, You deny that

You can't even live up to your own standard.

Grace empowers us to work right?

Then why doo you deny that in some Christians Grace is powerless?

Is it powerful or not?

Just trying to nip this false WOF "righting thinking" and "mind melding" salvation teaching in the bud. :)

Aww, Poor guy, You tried to do something and all you did was prove you have no faith in the grace of God giving us the power to overcome sin, Or that those created in Christ Jesus will do good work. through the power of grace through faith.

Why bother? You do not even believe this yourself. You claim being born of Gods spirit is what saves and empowers us, But then claim that a person can be saved and empowered and not do anything.

That's not faith.

And oh by the way, Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. SO YOUR WRONG It is right knowing, and right faith..

Your not saved by knowing or having faith in a lie. But in the truth.. And your empowered by that truth as the spirit magnified gods word..

*Apologies for such a long post but it had to be done. Thanks for your consideration.
If by the Spirit of the law in Jesus Christ we are set free from the law of sin and death, then what is the Spirit of the law? And if by the law of faith we are saved, and not by our own works of the law, then what is the law of faith? If the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, then what is the righteousness of the law?

And if all these things are given to us, then it is no more of our own works of the law, but God's who works in us. So what do all these things have in common, and how is the righteousness of the law fulfilled in us? It is fulfilled in us by LOVE. Love is the Spirit of the law, the law of faith is based on Love, and Love fulfills the righteousness of the law.

But it is not our Spirit, or our faith, or our own righteous, or even our own Love. But it is the Love of God that is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and by the faith of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:9
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

John 17:26
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

The "requirement of the Law" was fulfilled "in" us NOT "by" us. It was Jesus Himself that fulfilled the Law in us by condemning sin in the flesh when He took all the sin of the whole world for all time upon Himself. We are a new creation in Him now which is why we are NOT in the flesh but in the Spirit.

Romans 8:9-10 (NASB)
[SUP]9 [/SUP] However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

[SUP]10 [/SUP] If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

Here is Christ Himself "fulfilling the requirement of the Law "IN" us.

Romans 8:3-4 (NASB)
[SUP]3 [/SUP] For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh,
God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

[SUP]4 [/SUP] so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
