the world commonly talks about having a state of 'always learning' as a virtue -
to no matter how convicted you are of some truth, to be willing to hear and entertain another point of view.
or, to always be open to admitting that you might be wrong.
this is even sometimes pointed to as not just 'common sense' but being a 'Christian' frame of mind to live in -- as though it is to 'not judge' whether someone is wrong about something or not; to be 'kind' and always consider another persons take on something.

but is this scriptural?
what does that idea ((i hope i've explained well enough)) have to do with this passage, if anything:
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
(2 Timothy 3:6-7)

?

if you are always ready to consider an opposing view, a different version of what you think is true, then do you ever truly have 'knowledge' ?
do you know the "truth" if you can't be sure of it?
is it a Christian perspective to be open to different ideas, and never being 'dogmatic' about what is so and what is not so --
or is this in reality antichrist ?
please support either view with scripture, if you can .. ?

sorry if this is vague; i'm having trouble finding the right words to express it. maybe someone can help me with that, if you know what i'm trying to get at here.

thanks
2Ti 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2Ti 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

These people that are ever learning,and never able to come to the truth,are people claiming God,but they deny the Spirit leading them,but want their flesh to be in control,and are lovers of pleasures,more than lovers of God,and are lumped together with the world,that is getting worse,and worse,in attitude,where they are highly selfish,and arrogant,disobedient to parents,will not keep their promises,and do not care that much for other people,and such.

The people that are hypocrites,that love the world more than God,has been lumped in together with the world,that is getting worse in fleshy attitude,which God is pointing out that the world,as well as many claiming God,having a form of godliness,but deny the power thereof,are getting worse in fleshy attitude,and the hypocrites belong to the world,and not God.

Luk_9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Mat 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
Mat 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
Mat 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
Mat 25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
Mat 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
Mat 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
Mat 25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
Mat 25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
Mat 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
Mat 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
Mat 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
Mat 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
Mat 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Mat 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
Mat 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Mat 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Mat 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
Mat 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Mat 24:47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
Mat 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
Mat 24:49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
Mat 24:50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
Mat 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Rom_8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Not everyone that claims Christ,has the Spirit,but a lot have a form of godliness,but deny the Spirit leading them,in which they will do fleshy things as a result,being lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God,and they are ever learning,and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth,because of their being fleshy,and not spiritual,and are joined together with the disobedient of the world,that is getting worse,and worse,in attitude,being fleshy,and exalting themselves more as time goes on.

OK, so what i'm seeing in responses so far, is that always being "teachable" is one thing, and wise -- maintaining humility & meekness, not being "puffed up" and vain, thinking we know more than we do . . .

but it's another thing to carry this so far as to not honor what you know is true -- to be carried away by every wind of doctrine, and fall prey to every foolish conspiracy theory, never having knowledge and never holding on to truth when you find it.

does this sound right? and how do we know the difference?

((thanks errybody, and i do think this topic can easily lead to a lot of interesting discussion. but i don't want to tell you all what to think or talk about lol))

wisdom and maturity both come in time as does knowledge and discernment. To have a teachable heart is good even if your not saved but only God combined with a teachable heart can truly make one know the truth of anything. There are those who hunger for knowledge but all the knowledge in the world is meaningless if one doesn't have the right heart to utilize that knowledge.

We as Christians need a teachable heart and if our hearts eyes are set of God alone then he will lead us to deep and hidden secrets and truths and in doing so we will learn the correct doctrines as time goes by we will gain a humble and caring heart and will not use the knowledge he entrusted to us in the wrong way but will instead use that knowledge to show others to teach others to help others. at least this is how it was for me.

*chews lip uncomfortably*

Why do we do what we do? Because we want to glorify God or because we care about the things of the world more?

Seek and you shall find... Where is one's hope? What treasure are they putting stock in?

He'll make it evident to a person if they really want to be with him.

I learn something new every day.. :)
do we actually acquire knowledge every day?

or just 'learn' something today that you are ready to disregard tomorrow as soon as the next thought comes along? a kind of 'learning' that you can never actually trust to have been worth learning?

i think that might be part of the difference in '
always learning and never coming to a knowledge of the truth' and 'growing in the knowledge of God'

((2 Timothy 3:7 contrasted with 2 Peter 3:18, Colossians 1:10))

we learn until we know the truth :)

john 14:15-17 " if you Love me you will obey what I command, and I will ask the Father and He will give you another counselor to be with you forever, The spirit of TRUTH. the world cannot accept Him because it neither sees Him or knows Him. But you know him for He lives with you and will be in you."

john8:31-32....if you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples, then you will know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free"

john7:16-17 "Jesus answered, My teaching is not my own, it comes from Him who sent me. if anyone chooses to do Gods will, He will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own."

john 14:21-26 "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, He is the one who Loves me. He who Loves me, will be Loved By My Father, and I too will Love Him and show myself to Him.....v23. Jesus replied " If ANYONE Loves me he will obey my teaching. My Father will Love Him and we will come to Him and make our home with Him. He who does not Love me, will not obey my teaching These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. all this I have spoken while still with you, but the counselor, the Holy spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

The truth is very simple. the opposing opinions and doctrines are mans idea that I am wise, I know better than Jesus. its Just like the garden of eden : Man (adam) was given the plain truth from God " if you eat of this fruit, you will surely die."....that was absolutely true. BUT along came doubt from the serpents lips " did God REALLY say that?".....followed by an opposing idea " surely it wont Kill you."....

The truth is very plain and available for anyone who will accept the Truth of Jesus Christ. His words are what will never disappear, they are the eternal truth for every Christian, and even every person will find the truth of His words , some, sadly far too late. The truth is not open for interpretation, or dispute. its not like man makes it, not hard to understand at all, it is simply hard for a person to accept if they aren't willing to give themselves to Jesus as He gave Himself for us. if we Love the world we will serve the world, follow its teachings, accept them with joy. If We accept Jesus, we Love Him His way and the truth will no longer be tentative or a possibility, but He is the truth. all of Him, not only what men want to hear, but all that He meant to say to us, purposely.He laid His life down, we are called to lay ours down for Him, and also for our brother in need.

we learn to discover truth, when we find the truth we become the pearl merchant.....or in other words we submit to the Lord Jesus Christ, who teaches us to live the new Life we have been given, a life that is pleasing to God. The spirit is Key, it comes through Jesus, from God the Father to us. there is only truth and everything else, opinion, conjecture, thought ect...the truth is from God, all else is from man. simple to me. once we Know Jesus, there is no room for doubt, we hold to the truth and live.....

:D

Two thoughts:
1. In answer to your question to Blue, yes, I really learn something new every day. But there is knowledge, and then there is wisdom. Knowledge is the pieces of the puzzle. Wisdom is putting knowledge in the right spot and then knowing if it is in the right spot, since many of the pieces are the same shape and even if looking at the overall picture sometimes makes it hard to see the massiveness of the puzzle. ("God. God who created all and is worthy of being adored, praised, and loved for who he is" is the overall picture. He is the everything of the puzzle. He is also the Infinite. We are not.)

I caught myself saying "I learn something new every day" twice in the last few weeks, so decided to figure out how to put what I learned into the overall picture. I'll show what I mean, just because it doesn't seem like Godly wisdom, but it is knowledge that can turn into Godly wisdom.

I discovered "real men do play bingo." Sounds silly, but only one out of six guys in my family would play bingo, but only because he couldn't think of anything better to do that day. (And I found that out, only because I was playing bingo in the same place. lol) Not much of gained knowledge, huh?

But put that together with "real men don't wear pink" and "real men don't eat quiche" and the puzzle piece arrives. Google images of John Wayne. Most of his cowboy shots he wore pink. I didn't even know what quiche was until hubby made it for me. And, the reason I had to laugh at the bingo quip was because I was walking down the hall in a VA nursing home, and sure enough, real men -- the kind of men who went into the military -- were crowded into the caf playing bingo.

Lead me to question one more part of what real men do. Real men can no more be typecast than real women. One tiny little piece of the puzzle. Somehow that works out to God is worthy to be adored, praised and loved.

Oh! Were you expecting me to give some kind of grand lesson on how that works out? Sorry. I know it fits into the grand puzzle, but just knowing those three things about what real men are supposed to be but aren't, has taken me 30 years to figure out, so fitting it in is going to take longer. God gave me the puzzle picture to know where the pieces all lead to. I just haven't gathered enough of the pattern to see it fit yet in that one spot. But, yeah, learning something new every day is a good thing, because it does add pieces to what we truly need to know eventually.

2. I'm disturbed that 2 Tim talks about gullible women. Well, yeah, I know I can be gullible at times, but I'm working on that. But it does disturb me that it only points out the women, whereas today, it seems about equal between the sexes. Yeah. Women can be gullible. I think Eve was the first case study on that one. BUT isn't that part of the reason we're supposed to be submissive? Because we are naturally gullible, but the men in our lives are supposed to protect us from that.

What happened to so many men then? Because I see more gullible men on this particular board than gullible women. (Might be because this board is majority male, but geesh, it's supposed to be about talking about the Bible, and the gullibility factor overwhelms at times.) There are way too many Christian people being gullible, and they don't even think they are. They think they're recruiting more people to their position when their position wouldn't even fly in a seventh grade debate team. And 75% of that is guys.

(Not saying all people on this board are of that group, but, again, look at the first page of this board -- and I haven't yet today, but know this is true because it's always true. The vast majority of posts put on here are "I'll learn ya" posts that ultimately aren't worth learning, and even if learned the only thing received is a bunch of people think what they have to say is so darn important that no matter how someone responds, they're wrong -- even if the OP bothered reading the post and discovered the person who is wrong agrees with the OP 100%. People are so busy proving their point -- with ample verses of scripture that may or may not have a thing to do with what they're trying to get others to believe attached, just because that's what you're supposed to do. And, PH, I look forward to your posts, because that's NOT what you do. You really want to reason together. A bit of fresh air in a honeywagon of a board.)

What has happened to that weakness of women -- gullibility? I still have it, so I count on my hubby and family to slap me (metaphorically) when I do it again. God really needs to help us all, now that it seems an equally manly trait.

But, on the issue of gullibility, particularly now that I can no longer trust a great number of Christian men to protect me from myself, I have learned long ago how to combat a trait that simply won't go away. I listen better. I question authority giving authority only to those I trust. No one is worming their way into this home for very long, simply because I know I'm gullible, hubby knows I'm gullible, hubby knows I know I'm gullible, so we talk out everything including what someone is trying to teach me and ask God to protect us when we both become gullible.

Which pretty much lands us right into 2 Pet. and Col. 1.

It's like the "real men" scenario all over again. It may take us a while to find the flawed thinking, it will take a while for God to let us know how that knowledge works out in him, but he keeps getting us there eventually.

I met hubby in a church that had just been ramshacked by a charlatan. We know how much damage can be done in the Christian community. We're guarded, but we trust the two most important ones in our lives -- God and our spouse. THAT puzzle piece fits and I know where in the grand pattern.

Hebrews 8:10-12
[SUP]10 [/SUP]For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
[SUP]11 [/SUP]And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Colossians 1:9-13

[SUP]9 [/SUP]For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
[SUP]10 [/SUP]That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
[SUP]12 [/SUP]Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Ephesians 1:16-19

[SUP]16 [/SUP]Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
[SUP]17 [/SUP]That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
[SUP]18 [/SUP]The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
[SUP]19 [/SUP]And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

IMO, this is what is given when you work out your salvation with fear and trembling. When you ask God and read the bible and try to figure out how you were delivered from the power of darkness and translated into His Kingdom.

The biggest question is what are you learning and what is the source? There is no substitute for coming to the Lord and learning from Him. It is nice to get explanations of what the Lord has said from other people to get further insight.

In all those passages the knowledge that is received is given by God. Its not attained by self. Its not received from other people... Just like salvation... A gift.

I think if we know that much about him he wouldn't try to recruit us because he cant trick us if anything he would be like you know to much i cannot let you walk away

Hey!! I resemble that remark! :cool: That's about as good a definition of spiritual warfare, and overcoming (if/when victorious), and the "investing/s" of talent/s (as in parable of) , that can be said. IMHO

It keeps me going onwards when fighting with the kingdom of darkness, that, "there must be (a) sheep (part of me) in there. And? I'm going to fetch it!" Or? cease when told: "My grace is sufficient for thee." Which, in some cases, ends up like a line I heard from a sermon I heard John Hagee, onced upon a lifetime ago, say. "Take another lap around the mountain." :eek:

I believe I understand what you are saying, and I agree with jasonj comments below.
Jesus said to him that has, more will be given. And Peter said in 2 Pet. 1:5-8 to keep building on faith.
So I believe it means continue growing in the teachings of Christ.
