Funny how the guy that brings a bible to a bible discussion gets blasted.

Even funnier that they blast his bible in their spiritual blindness

Hopefully this will change the minds of the "Bible remedies are off the table" secular mindset.

Dealing With Depression - Christian Families Today

[h=1]Dealing With Depression[/h][h=3]Everyone has felt depressed at some point in their life, and clinical depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Here is some information along with some thoughts on how to deal with depression as new creation in Christ.[/h]

During this prolonged stressful life event, the enemy planted tormenting and taunting negative personal pronoun thoughts in my mind like “I did not trust, fast, pray, or serve enough for God to answer my prayer.” Therefore, I struggled with thoughts of being inadequate and feelings of failure even though the source of those thoughts and feelings have long been identified and dealt with in Christ.

[h=2]Labeling Depression[/h]Three main types of depressive disorders are identified by the DHC. These include:

- melancholia, which is evidenced by emotional difficulties and physical problems,

- bipolar disorder, which has mood swings that soar with elation and then sink into depression, and

- dysthymia, which is lived out in a chronic, low-grade anxiety and is a less severe form of depression that begins in childhood and may last for many years in adulthood.

[h=2]Searching for Causes[/h]Without understanding the law of sin (Romans 7:23), finding the cause of depression is like nailing jell-o to a wall. Thus, the DHC gives many “causes” of depression. Two are:
Oh dear,WHAT A REVELATION!!! who wouldda thunked that sin would be a major root of depression. The modern church would hang you from a tree for such heresy.
Those anti God believers seem to think the sinful world gets their Joy from a disobediant heart and lifestyle.

[h=2]Treatments of Depression[/h]Two of the world’s treatments are medication and psychotherapy. These also have some validity because our physical bodies are decaying and do malfunction. Medications are sometimes used to try to treat a chemical imbalance. (Two cautions in taking anti-depressants are: (1) they have unwanted side effects and (2) they may repress the symptoms and conceal the real cause of the chemical imbalance and depression.)

Not listed in the DHC are the Christian counseling methods of treating depression. Several of these Christian approaches include:

- Eclectic Counseling which is Bible-oriented and integrates secular psychological concepts that are “consistent” with scripture. Steps on “how to” succeed over certain problems are usually given to help bring about a change in thinking and behavior.

- Directive Counseling a Bible-centered approach which scripturally confronts the depressed person out of a Christian concern for the purpose of producing repentance. Scriptural principles are given in “how to” steps to direct behavioral change.

- Memory Source Counseling, which is a Christ-centered approach that helps the counselee follow his or her present emotional pain to its source which is a past, stressful life event. Once found, Jesus is asked to reveal the truth about the lies the counselee has believed about the past hurt. Thinking and behavioral changes follow Jesus’ revelation.

- Discipleship Counseling, also a Christ-centered approach which focuses on the believer’s life in Christ. Essential to this approach is the Holy Spirit’s revelation in knowing God intimately and understanding how to live out of Christ’s life, one’s identity in Christ, the cross applied rather than implied, how one’s flesh has developed, the law of sin, brokenness, surrender, forgiveness, and resolution. Behavioral change spontaneously occurs as one learns to walk in the Spirit. This approach is also known as The Exchanged Life.

[h=2]The Primary Problem[/h]When treating depression, it is necessary to realize that bouts with depression and having a weakened immune system are certainly problems but not the primary problem. They are only symptoms of the main problem. (Note: a chemical imbalance can be but seldom is the initiating cause of depression.) The Bible calls trying to live life by one’s positive and negative social environment as walking after the flesh.

However, walking after the flesh is not the primary problem either. When Christ died, the believer’s positive and negative flesh were crucified with Him (Galatians 5:24). The primary problem is found in Galatians 5:16, which says, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” The main problem is not walking by the Spirit or not abiding in Christ (John 15:5).

[h=2]The Victory[/h]The victory over my recent bout with depression began when the Holy Spirit revealed to me that I was trying to do God’s work my way (i.e. by my talents, creativity, and abilities). I had been walking after my flesh and didn’t even know it. I entered brokenness and grieved that I sinned. Then, the Spirit reminded me of my identity in Christ - that He is my everything (II Peter 1:3-4), my life (Colossians 3:4), my justification (Romans 3:24), my redemption (I Peter 1:18), my salvation (Acts 4:12), my righteousness (II Corinthians 5:21), my acceptance (Romans 15:7), my adequacy (II Corinthians 3:5-6), and my completeness (Colossians 2:9-10).

Very little on meds in this CHRISTIAN article.

But some do not have the "luxury", rolleyes,of getting the "miracle" ( deception of the worlds methods) of medication.

Are meds off the table????

No. But the mindset that meds trump God and are our first "go to" is, .......not from heaven!!!!!

Sad that the church has evolved into pagan brainwashed compromise.

Ok,see this post here (not picking on you sir,but if something rises up in you to hate me it will be a normal reaction LOL)

BUT.
This is a "proper" (by cc standards cessationist 'not saying you are one') post

The correct ingredients have been mixed in. Secular, and a sprinkle of heaven.

If you do by some error, ever forget to leave out the secular part (again being sarcastic)

Don't spread it around at this site. (with out the proper asbestos shorts as default protocol)
I was trying to help someone who was hurting inside. I am curious what you are tying to do.

isn't this thread about working through anxiety and depression?

wow. that escalated quickly.
Exactly why I haven't been back on here. It started off well with personal experiences, positivity and hope and then crashed and burned.

You're a nasty individual whom knows verses but doesn't act like Christ would.
Christ was not against medicine or doctors.
This could of been a thread with positive verses, personal experiences and those giving hope onto others. But nope... So keep the thread. It's clearly a better source for your to vent your anger than it is to help someone in my situation.

It's easy for most of us to give advice from personal experience. I like reading the Psalms, just start at Psalms 1 and keep going, they go-to depressed or anxious scripture that can refocus me. The problem is, you're describing a level of difficulty that goes beyond what most of us experience, and, like Billyd, ditto you're describing a problem that you need to talk to somebody professional about. Luke was a physician. I have great reluctance over drugs, because they don't help all people, a percentage getting worse. Something important is a proper diagnosis, before drugs, that you are suffering depression or some anxiety disorder and are not, in fact, bipolar, a condition antidepressant drugs can amplify. It's complicated, but we've all had to resort to medical professionals of one sort or another. In any case, you don't want to let a debilitating problem fester that's crippling, any more than you would an infection. As to drugs, not all are of an addictive nature, nerve agents, rather many alter brain chemical balances, slowly. To be honest, I don't like any of it, but it beats shaking in a corner or the desperation reflected in repeated suicide thoughts and attempts, which are not normal and need all possible plans of attack, spiritual and medical.

This really did help one evening. Thank you :)

You are in YOUR head.

I get my answers from the bible Jr.

You basically call Jesus a wimp.

Good luck sir.

Yes,luck since heaven is such an offence to you.

I can tell you never go there..

Doctors are your answer. They almost never prescribe what Jesus does.(you know, the guy you call a wimp)
Maybe go learn to read. I asked if you also called a widower who was depressed a whimpy narcissist since those were your words. Depression is just in your head and all that nonsense you wrote.
And take some spinach.

So going back onto topic, the following has really helped me this week
* Driving and listening to a christian station (I do not have a radio in my home)
* Up beat gospel music (Hill Song is my favorite)
* Reading psalms
* Knowing God keeps all his promises, the Bible has a lot of promises from God <3
* Knowing things happen for a reason, sometimes when things go wrong it's all part of God's greater plan. This too shall pass.

Had a rough two days... Started on the day of my birthday. I know those hurting me just want me to react. I didn't. I read psalms last night and spoke to a friend. Have to say the Psalms reading really has been the best.
Thanks again for the suggestion :)

Morning sister! Praying for you. You are a precious daughter of the one true King. He is working ALL things for your good and His glory.

I have struggled before as well. There are several caring brothers and sisters who will encourage and strengthen you as we ALL should.

Peace, Grace and Love to you.
In Jesus name

Wellbutrin, celexa and ativan. I am not longer on ativan. When my anxiety attacks ceased I flushed those down the toilet.
The other meds work, but I do not intend on being on them permanently. Counseling and alot of faith searching, prayer and moral support helped.
Also, removing negative people from my life and learned not to be a doormat did wonders.

Did not like the ativan myself...actually quit taking it. Am still on Paxil and Xanax though.
