If video games are Idols, meaning a mere television is an Idol too. If I may ask. Does one worship a video game or ask a video game to forgive sins?.. that was just an innocent question...
it would be more like a tv show or movie than a tv

and the characters within them are the graven images and false idols

i dont worship tv or watch movies

but if you spend all your time worrying about these characters or progress in a game

that sure resembles worship

i wouldnt risk it loving God

my suggestion as a human no superior to anyone here is to turn from it

I posted a similar thread a while ago. I asked if there were video games in heaven and if there where would we even care if there was. Could you see Jesus and I chilling on a couch eating Doritos and drinking mountain dew while playing mario kart? Or does that sound like something he wouldn't do. My question is if you could see anything in heaven what would you want it to be? Oh and if you want to give me "video games are evil" do it on another thread, this is just for fun.
Well here is my two cents.
Heaven will be beyond all our expectations. Here is a story from my childhood that may answer your question. When I was 14 my family went to visit my grandfather. After being in Europe for several years I forgot what it was like there at his house. He lived on a farm in the mountains over 96 miles east of Nashville Tennessee. I asked my parents if Pappy (grandpa) had a tv . Mom and dad said they did not know. He didn't the last time we were there . All I could do was hope , life without tv would be the worst. We were going to spend 3 weeks there I couldn't imagine how bad it would be . When we arrived after unloading everything into the house my sisters and I saw fireflies in the woods behind Pappy's house . That was so cool I had not remembered ever seeing one . The next day was followed by listening to my grandfather talk about what has been going on there in his neck of the woods ,and helping him out around the farm my sisters and I had a blast . The next three weeks was spent exploring the farm and hearing old stories. I did not want to leave ,but dad was going to need to get to his next post so we had to leave . By the way Pappy did have a tv but that would have been boring.
Blessings
Bill

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

so are you saying that having a favorite fictional charector from a book or game is considered a sin?

i didnt read all the posts im sure this was covered but video games are false idols

ive been blessed and helped removing my desire for them

the only i still battle with is yugioh duel links

ive deleted my accounts but i went back to it a few times
used to play dozens games more than i studied the Word

just pray for God to increase the Holy spirit in you in Jesus name and your desire for them to die to you

it seems to be more a process than instantanious thing for me

(same with anime and sports like MMA)
I'm not sure this is a safe across-the-board assumption to make. The whole point of idols of the heart is that everyone has different idols. I played a video game once and that doesn't mean I committed idolatry in doing so. I have idols in different places. like Paul says "all things are lawful, but not all things are helpful"

I think we should reconsider what you are saying...so you mean anything that entertains us is sin? What is sin?...

well is it of the world?

and how do you define love?

i posted only some of the verses that give me this perspective

Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

1 Corinthians 10:14 - Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone.

so because they are not real it is a sin to "like" them? I do not see how. I am pretty sure we all know that they do not exist. Now, if I worshiped a fictional deity, yes that would be sin. But i don't.
I simply have my favorite characters. Please explain to me how liking them is a sin

Play as much as you wish if you have time for it, but do not think it will be with you forever. Only God will. Nor your games, neither your marriage, neither your coca-cola.

I think these are the things that complicate being a Christian. Christianity does not forbid people to play video games nor go to work and spending time with loved ones. Being in Christ is a simple journey that need understanding

Yes exactly! That is the point. HOW do you define love? the Bible tells us to love God, and it tells us to flee idolatry. Those are statements that live in perfect harmony. It then tells us to love one another. Wait...does that contradict? Wouldn't loving one another be idolatry? But we ARE commanded to love one another, AND to flee idolatry. So...how do you define love?

The simple answer is that English is stupid :p. There is only one word for love which means I use the same word to say I love this dish of food as I would to say I love God.

Anyone who knows me could tell you that food is not something I have a problem making an idol out of. So what did I just say? was I putting food on a level with God? NOT ON YOUR SWEET LIFE I WASN'T :D. So what? "Love" can mean many things. It is ok to love things here on earth, and we are even commanded to do so in the case of "love one another." We only have one word for love. Please be considerate of the short-comings of the English language, and don't make any assumptions if someone uses such a broad word differently than you would :)

So idoltry is when you put it above God. When you have (as the dictionary definition says) extreme admiration, love, or reverence.

My view....proper perspective......Solomon said to enjoy the days of your youth, the fruit of your labor and that there is a time for everything under the sun....we are to be in the world, but not of the world.....think about the professional baseball players, football players, actors etc. that have been able to be a huge witness for Jesus because of the games they play and the opportunity that said position afforded them in the public eye.....is it idolatry to watch TV or play a video game......let every man be fully persuaded in his OWN MIND......that is how I would play that one....

ah, i see. yes, I can see how things like this could keep us from God's word. I am glad that you could see past that, and refind his word :)
