We know something occured that caused those that were there to believed that they were baptized with the Holy Spirit because Simon wanted to buy the ability to cause people to receive the Spirit.

However as I said before we have to take our clues as to what that could be from other parts of Acts.
go read Acts 10.
not normative today.
Gospel going to gentiles a SIGN to jews.

Romans 10:17
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Galatians 3:2
I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?

4runner 3:2
I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by seeking a second baptism, an experience?

course they won't.
they'd have to fall down on their faces and repent, and start all over.
and ironically they don't believe the prodigal, so they are locked into a paradigm of their own making.

it goes one of two ways: search for the real truth and just sweep the other aside joyfully, grateful that God will lead....or harden into position (quenching the Spirit) and go into full-blown delusion.

BOB DEWAAY.....hello?
of course not. Like the pharisees in Jesus day.l When Jesus confronted them with truth, instead of listening to what Jesus said, to see if he was right. Instead of showing Jesus he was wrong by explaining how jesus misinterpreted the scripture he used against them. They ignored him, did not say a word, and secretly sought to have him put to death.

again, we do not learn from the mistakes of our ancestors.

Simon, who used sorcery to bewitch the people of Samaria, had a problem with power lust accompanied with approbation lust that came through a bond of iniquity in his heart (Acts 8:9-11). Simon observed the miracles and signs that was done through Philip and lusted after them (Acts 8:13). When Peter and John were sent to Samaria and layed hands on those that believed, Simon desired greatly for the power and authority of the apostles through the laying on of hands and was willing to purchase that ability to be recognized, but it was no for sale.

Simon observed the exchange between the apostles and those they laid hands upon, which was done through faith-rest and not some big demonstration of the power of God. Simon believed and was baptized but had this stronghold of iniquity (not personal sin) that got the best of him in this situation because this baptism of the Spirit through the laying on of hands demonstrated a quiet and peaceful authority that was recognized and received by the recipients who believed.

Peter was dealing with the issue of this man's heart because Peter had been their himself with the Lord and had demonstrated his own iniquity, his own unbelief and indifference to the Lord when he was used by Satan to rebuked Him (Mt 16:22), who also denied Him three times (Mt 26:69-75) and forsook Him at the cross (Mt 26:56,58 ) and then went back to his fishing boat instead of preaching to the lost sheep of Israel which he was called to do (Mt 10:6, Jn 21:3). It was not personal sin that made Peter do these things, it was iniquity in the heart that needed to be dealt with.
