You would be correct about that...
While I don't mind having a nice building to serve the church, I think the "trappings" should be minimal.. for utility, rather than beauty, or style.
I believe one of the main things a church should do is benevolence work. If a church is not doing that, I will not be a part of it. I used to be the "point man" for our benevolence outreach, for 5 or 6 years, and was happy that the elders were always ready to meet a genuine need, even if the benevolence fund was dry (which happened more than once...)
I finally had to take a sabbatical, as it was beginning to wear on me, and I could sense a lessening of empathy on my part... so I had to let others step in, with less jaded attitudes.

Anyway, long story... in order to say that I agree with you. A church's focus shouldn't be "things"... it should be on helping people.
We have a very ornate and elaborate platform setting. We nailed some used pallets to the back wall, and draped a few sheets around.

I'm seriously thinking more about the home church thing. If it was good enough in the 1st century it's good enough for me.

The church I attend now is very much like a home church, though it is in a commercial building: the room is set up each week, and then everything is put back in storage, and the chairs put away, after the service. The congregation is somewhat small, certainly well below one hundred. When the children clear out before the teaching, about half the room is left, usually between twenty and thirty adults. We also have a pot luck luncheon once a month following the service. Last Sunday I made a pasta dish with baby beets, so it was very bright pink :D Some people were even telling me it looked purple LOL. We also have a home fellowship meeting at the pastor's house once a month in the evening; it is usually the last Friday of the month. Plus, most Sundays the pastor and his wife invite a number of people over to their house to get to know them better. It is a different group each time :)

He will put us where He has determined us to be and to do whatever He wants. If the Lord wants you to be a truck driver - you had better not be pastoring a church ( no matter how good it looks ). This is working in the flesh trying to "work for God".
Does this also apply to a banker and/or CEO? I have known many of pastors who have had to resort to everyday jobs because their congregations were small and yet remain faithful as a pastor.
Paul was a tent maker.
Sometimes I think it would help their calling as a pastor to get out into the work-a-day world, at least a part time job, so they can relate a little better to us plebs.

The route this country is heading we may have no other choice...or attend a "government approved" church.

Government approved sounds like it could only be Satanic. :p

Definitely not of the Lord...

They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

Funny you should mention that.... I got an email from the church office the other day, broadcast to the whole church, stating that the decision had been made to not allow "open carry" in our worship services. Concealed carry is still allowed, and welcomed, but open carry, not so much.

Only in Texas? I don't know, but it certainly happens here.

The last time I was in El Paso at a restaurant...it was the opposite...you had to open carry and not conceal it...lol
