Galatians 3:1-2 KJVS
[1] O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? [2] This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Paul ties in receiving the Holy Spirit (vs.2) with believing the Gospel (vs. 1).
thanks for the response, and also ties into hearing the correct gospel. I cant off my head remember numbers but one group had not heard of the holy spirit when paul arrived so they had not yet received it. thanks for the scripture and insight

Yes, and I've heard many people state that you must get rid of your sins first. Fact is, I could not do so until I had the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. He gave me the power to recognize how I was grieving the Lord, and then gave the power to turn from what I was doing. He was my helper as I repented and turned my life around.
amen to that ! I think repenting of sin is misunderstood by many. in some ways to me, it is repenting of the old written code because if we repent of following the mosaic Law wich has a purpose to identify and condemn sin, we are able to follow the new way of the spirit in john 3 and romans 8. some take repentance to mean somehow become sinless and then you are acceptable, I agree with you completely the spirit comes and cleanses us inside, thanks for taking the time to reply, God bless

Jason,

There is a distinction, the Godhead is revealed as the Spirit. The Father is also referred to as God. Jesus, Christ, Son. The Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit. What we receive is a seal, a portion, the holy Spirit of promise, the spirit that is of God, spirit of holiness, holy Spirit... capitalization is important to distinction and doctrine. In scripture, the Godhead is shown to teach us, in the inner man, our holy Spirit.

[SUP]13 [/SUP]In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise

[SUP]30 [/SUP]And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

[SUP]12 [/SUP]Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
thanks for the input

I received the Holy Spirit twice in my life.
God took him away the first time as a act of mercy.
The second time I received the Holy Spirit seven days before that God had taken away all my bad habits and I had this strong urge to read my Bible, something I'd rarely do.
After seven days of reading the Bible God tested me for my faith on September 11th,a woman came up to me and said I passed after being tested.
I prayed for forgiveness of my sins and the Holy Spirit afew days after when I got home before bed, and I felt the Holy Spirit giving me a new heart.
It felt like my heart got pushed in a little and my heart beat got lighter.
thank you for the input, God bless

You get born from the Spirit and receive the Spirit when you get saved. Baptism in the Spirit you get when someone else who's baptized in the Spirit prays for you and lays his hands on you, well that's how I received it and others I know.
thank you for the input. there is scripture that supports what you said here. a group of believers hadn't received the spirit because they hadn't even been told of it, paul then layed His hands on them and [prayed and they received the holy spirit.

The holy spirit is given to all to truly to come to Christ, when I was saved he was the first one I encountered I was as you could say baptized by fire, Believe me his power his fire the life that is so abundant in him was like nothing I ever imagined I felt him burning inside me and all around me.

How one receives the holy spirit is indeed a good question but one that I am more curious about is who is the holy spirit? in my time of of faith I have noticed that God the father and Jesus while being one in the same have different qualities different aspects in their nature and I am curious of my friend the holy spirit. I was talking to him once him the holy spirit and I kept feeling that he has another name one that is more personal one that has a deeper meaning and I could have sworn I heard someone say my name is in the wind, I have no idea what that means if it was him but I know God the father quite well and I know Jesus quite well but I don't know the holy spirit that well.
wow that is awesome, thank you for the input :)

Is the Holy Spirit the God within us? The voice within? The one who guides us when we make a choice? Yes we can easily picture God the father and Jesus but the Holy Ghost is a mystery. The God the father sitting on the throne up stairs and Jesus in His right hand. The Holy Spirit is the busy buddy doing all the dirty job putting up with mankind here on earth after Jesus' job was finished.

according to some scripture we are the new temple of God who dwells with us as we follow Jesus. When He died on the cross and said it is accomplished or it is finished, the temple curtain was torn. This, to me is significant for sure. the temple curtain separated the people from the most holy Place where Gods presence dwelt along with the ark. the High preist to my recollection was only allowed to enter once a year for atonement. no one else was permitted beyond the curtain. it was miraculously torn at His death announcing the accomplishment of the old covenant, and now through the spirit, our hearts are the most holy place where Gods presence dwells, within the presence of Christ, who dwells in us. just rambling thanks for the resomse God bless you. I would say the holy spirit is Gods spiritual and very real presence within us.

Just looking to gather ideas, and scriptures concerning receiving the holy spirit to hopefully together all come to a better understanding for those who are willing.....just wanting to hear your understanding on this subject. God bless you
The Holy Spirit, I believe, is God when he is speaking to us. If you want to develop a relationship with the Lord, I would remember these two Scriptures:

Pray constantly. 1 Thess 5:17 RSV

[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together.
[35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him.
[36] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"
[37] And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
[38] This is the great and first commandment.” Matt 22:34:40 RSV

Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Acts 19:1-4 KJVS
[1] And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, [2] He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. [3] And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. [4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

to dig a little into your answer, you are saying we need to believe that the holy spirit is with us, in order to receive it ? is that somewhat correct? is that the faith you are speaking of here
No. Believing we have the Holy Spirit is not the way to receive Him. When you receive the Holy Spirit, you will know that you know that you know...

2 Corinthians 5:17 KJVS
[17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

...and the second is like it : love yoyur neighbor as yourself for on these two commands hang all of the law and prophets.... I was posting this to guage if people have the same understanding of important things. Just looking to get different understanding of what people believe and why. thanks for the input and scripture.

Acts 19:1-4 KJVS

And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. [3] And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. [4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
[5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. [7] And all the men were about twelve.

They were disciples about 20 years after Pentecost. They therefore believed on Jesus as taught to do by John the Baptist, and water baptized like we should, unto repentance, which Jesus carried on teaching, to Repent, believe my gospel.

Obviously there are more baptisms for believers, beyond that one most Christians today know about, of which relatively few have pursued. When the men heard Paul's word, they were baptized. Number 2. Being baptized into Christ by the Spirit is a very simple explanation, like the Hebrews were baptized into Moses, and the cloud, and sea experience. Then came the laying on of hands, and baptism #3, accompanied by speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Those men submitted to what the 120 submitted to 20 nearly 2 decades earlier, and the house of Cornelius experienced.
Want it all, receive it all. Until that happens the average Christian just won't be found speaking boldly in public about Jesus, and will struggle to gain elementary knowledge of his kingdom. With that you will go among hardened prisoners and preach and teach the gospel. You will stand when invited and preach to the salvation of hearers. With the fullness of the Spirit in you, nothing is impossible. The eyes and ears are opened to the Holy Spirit guidance we all need.

When I was first "saved" among the So. Baptists, I had confidence I had eternal life, but had no power, no confidence to even go witness Christ to someone else. I just couldn't accumulate knowledge to be confident to do that. I found some comfort in that when the pastor asked for people to join him after church to go door knocking, only one elderly couple always volunteered. 500 of us left for restaurants or big family meals.

But upon experiencing that last baptism by asking for it as a guest at a full gospel businessmen's meeting, I instantly comprehended all I had studied, and became a soul winner with boldness that very day. The other 500 back in the church stayed put, because that's the Baptist way. I moved on.

Ask, seek, knock. If the folks around you can't help, find a believer who offers to lay hands on you, then enjoy the infilling. Stay filled by mastering the word of God daily, and practicing what you learn. Then be ready to lay hands on others seeking what those men got. You will be different, and they will ask you.
