Exactly how many false prophecies does it take for the label of false prophet to be applied to a prophet or prophetess?

1) Joseph Smith founder of the Mormons stated a few false prophecies, yet the Mormons never gave up on him.

2) The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, head of the Jehovah's Witness',printed in it's magazines several dates for Christ to return and they all failed. They are still printing the same magazines.

I assume christian cults would simply shrivel up and die with a single false prophecy but instead, the members of these cults continue to rally around thier founders with a rabid devotion.

3) Ellen G White prophetess of SDA made numerous blundering false prophecies. Here are a few:

a) Jesus will return in 1845!
"During the year 1845 I met Miss Ellen G. Harmon several times at my uncle's house in South Windham, Me. The first of these meetings was in the month of May, when I heard her declare that God had revealed to her that Jesus Christ would return to this earth in June, the next month." (Lucinda Burdick, notarized letter, published in Limboline)

b) Jesus will return September 1845!
"During the haying season I again met her in company with James White at the same place, and heard my uncle ask her about the failure of the Lord to appear in June according to her visions. She replied that she had been told in the language of Canaan which she did not understand; but that she had since come to understand that Christ would return in September, at the second growth of grass instead of the first." (Ibid.)

c) Whites to be thrown into prison 1846
"Once, when on their way to the eastern part of Maine, she saw that they would have great trouble with the wicked, be put in prison, etc. This they told in the churches as they passed through. When they came back, they said they had a glorious time. Friends asked if they had seen any trouble with the wicked, or prisons? They replied, 'None at all.' People in all the churches soon began to get their eyes open, and came out decidedly against her visions" (Ibid.)

d) A great pestilence is coming to the United States!
"What we have seen and heard of the pestilence [of 1849], is but the beginning of what we shall see and hear. Soon the dead and dying will be all around us." (Present Truth, Sept. 1849).

e) Jesus will return in 1850!
"My accompanying angel said, 'Time is almost finished. Get ready, get ready, get ready.' . . . now time is almost finished. . . and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months." (Early Writings, pp. 64-67)

f) Those in 1856 will see Jesus return!
"I was shown the company present at the Conference. Said the angel: 'Some food for worms, some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus.'" Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 131

g) 1864 - Earth to be depopulated soon!
"The human family was presented before me, enfeebled. Every generation has been growing weaker, and disease of every form visits the human race.... Satan's power upon the human family increases. If the Lord should not soon come and destroy his power, the earth would soon be depopulated." Testimony #8, p.94, in Spiritual Gifts III-IV

h) Slavery to be revived in the South!
"Slavery will again be revived in the Southern States; for the spirit of slavery still lives. Therefore it will not do for those who labor among the colored people to preach the truth as boldly and openly as they would be free to do in other places. Even Christ clothed His lessons in figures and parables to avoid the opposition of the Pharisees." (Spalding & Magan Collection, page 21 and 2 MR #153, page 300)

i) Slave masters to suffer seven plagues!
"I saw that the slave master will have to answer for the soul of his slave whom he has kept in ignorance...the master must endure the seven last plagues and then come up in the second resurrection and suffer the second, most awful death." (Early Writings, p. 276)

j) Rappings to increase!
"I saw that soon it would be considered blasphemy to speak against the rapping, and that it would spread more and more, that Satan's power would increase and some of his devoted followers would have power to work miracles and even to bring down fire from heaven in the sight of men." Early Writings, p. 59.

Can't we all just admit Ellen G White is a liar and a false prophet?

One false prophecy in the Old Testament! Are we to extend grace to false prophets in the New Testament? I don't think so.

"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. [SUP]4 [/SUP]They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." 2 Tim. 4:3-4

We know the people listed are false prophets, we simply ignore them.

However, false prophets use what they believe in to teach their own brand of false prophecy. They will say that these false prophets believed in something, so you must not believe in it. What they list can be what God teaches. It is a way to make people believe their own brand of false prophecy. We must base what we know of truth on scripture, not on opposing false prophets. Even false prophets can include some truth in their teachings, we must beware.

When people teach through what men teach, instead of teaching from God's word, it is not to be listened to. We are not to take on judging people, that is for God to do. We are to teach truth.

Anyone ever think to see what God says?

Deu 13:1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
Deu 13:2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
Deu 13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Deu 13:4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

In the theocracy God established, a false prophet that would turn people away from Him faced dire consequences...

Deu 13:5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Deu 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
Deu 13:7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
Deu 13:8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
Deu 13:9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
Deu 13:10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deu 13:11 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

What about the one that prophesies and it doesn't come to pass?

Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Ignore him.

Some say it takes only one prophesy to be wrong to name one a false prophet, but we have to be careful on how we test prophesies, some may not come to pass simply because pray/repentance changed the path of that prophesy.

I said one time, too. :)

I think false prophets go beyond just prophecy. A false prophet can also be a teacher or preacher, not necessarily prophesying things to come, but just speaking contrary to God's word, and truly, there are many of those these days. This is why it is so important to know God's word and to have a valid and current relationship with Him. A sound Pastor and/or Teacher will tell his or her congregation to know God's word and to test what he or she is saying against God's word to know for themselves the truth.

I think we are to extend grace to false prophets in the New Testament, if...

they repent of their false prophecies,
acknowledge it as sin,
turn form this sin,
and accept Christ as their atonement for this sin.

Problem is, I've never heard of a false prophet actually repenting.

The most I've ever heard one say is, "Oops."

The last time they came to my door their message was " there is no hell " I told them " for your sake I hope not " and don't come back to my door with your lemon lime twist on the truth ". it takes just one false prophecy, and I don't want to hear anymore from that person.

Many prophecies cannot be tested. We really do not have proof that every prophecy of the Bible was fulfilled; we take it by faith.

Angela,
It's very sad to me that more churches are fulfilling this scripture, they value the love of money & the praise of people more than the approval of God, it is rare to find a preacher that preaches the truth, especially in the world we live in, we desperately need church leaders to preach biblical truth, instead of watering Gods word down to fit their lifestyle, it's a sad state we live in

It only takes a lie to make a liar. It only takes one sin of adultery to make an adulterer and one act of theft to make a thief. A little leaven ruins and infects the whole lump. As believers we can not be 95% spiritual and 5% carnal. We can not be partially filled with the Spirit nor can we bear only some of the fruit of the Spirit and not all of it. Our yeas must be yea and our nays must be nay, anything else is considered evil. Jesus said that you have heard of old, 'thou shall not commit adultery', but I say that if a man looketh upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already in his heart (same for a woman). What shall we say of a tongue that speaks evil of a friend or a spouse, is not that tongue set on fire of hell and shall it not be condemned? Many speak of false prophets but what about false brethren (2 Cor 11:26) who bear false witness and sow discord among the brethren in (Prov 6:19)? These are things we should also consider with a meek and quiet spirit that studies to be quiet.

How do we know if a preacher is preaching the truth through the Holy Spirit or not? If he preached something that offended us would we disqualify him and conclude that he's not loving or caring? If he preached something that differed from what we believe or have learned would we dismiss him as one that teaches false doctrine? What are the guidelines that we have from God that allows us to be able to discern what is of God and what is not? Many dismissed Christ as not being from God because he was an offense to them and what they believed and they ended up crucifying him. If the message that is preached has no cross in it or word that cuts and divides the soul from the spirit, won't we be left lingering in our carnal flesh with the natural mind of our old adamic nature trying to understand the things of God? Do you think that this is the kind of preaching that should be in the pulpit of the local assembly?

As a believer in Yahweh, have you said anything as a brother that was false? If you have, should we consider you to be a false brother or just someone who made a mistake but thought they were telling the truth?
