Im a bit confused by why Deuteronomy is used out of context to say that women cannot wear pants or jeans or a t shirt and essentially the same clothes men wear. I mean really? Would God send a woman to hell for that? Are not we the ones who decides whats a female or male garment anyways? What about men who wear what would be considered a dress? Are they going to hell for wearing these clothes? Someone help me make sense of this please.

I don't think the problem is so much what woman wear, but the men wearing dresses, etc. not that they're condemned to hell, but as cross dressing is sure confusion, but I don't have a problem with woman wearing jeans or pants, or who wears no makeup. Or if you're from a nation where a kilt is worn, I can't say the man is wrong.

btw could you post the verses from deu?

Jesus sum up the law

[h=3]Matthew 22:36-40[/h]New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]36 [/SUP]“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
[SUP]37 [/SUP]Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[SUP][a][/SUP] [SUP]38 [/SUP]This is the first and greatest commandment. [SUP]39 [/SUP]And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[SUP][b][/SUP] [SUP]40 [/SUP]All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Yep - Jesus said these were the most important commandments.
He did not rule out others.
And this 'rule' is not one of the 10 commandments anyway - it's one of the edicts or rules that were given to Israel. There were many. Jesus was never asked about them, only the commandments.

True, the NT does not mention this. So perhaps it is part of the Law we should ignore. There is nothing Biblical to say we should not except that it was part of the Law which Paul said was fulfilled and so was no longer valid. You could be right - and the NT is all we should adhere to...

But the NT (Corinthians?) also says women should wear a headcovering at church - how many churches do you know where women do this?

There is a lot of selection in Christianity.
It's hard to know what is right. Those who insist they know usually do not stick to all the rules - myself included.

OT laws were for the establishment of Israel as a righteous witness in the ancient world. The purpose of this law, is the same as the laws after it, like not mixing types of seeds in a field, or types of fibers in a garment. They are all laws against dilution of anointing, so that each work of God may reach its full strength in you. The NT equivalent is Rev. 3:15-16, and Matt. 5:37.

I don't think for a woman to wear pants or clothing similar to men is wrong or sinful. Yet it sure seems bizarre to see a man dressed in women's clothing and make up. I would go so far as saying it is a sin for a man to do so because his motivation is to feminine. Now a Scotsman in a kilt is not sin at all. It is the motivation that makes it a sin.

I know this is a tad off topic, but if the reasoning that some churches use to get the women who attend to wear dresses only is that women didn't wear pants in the time of Jesus, then what did the men wear during that time....not pants. They all wore long robes/dress-like garbs. If you watched the Bible miniseries on The History Channel recently, you saw everyone in dress like garb and no pants.

Thoughts?????

My thoughts? I'm extremely jealous. it must have felt very comfortable to walk around in robes.

What I am looking for is that it is a bit hypocritical for them to "make" women wear dresses if that is their reasoning when men wore "dress"-like garb back then.

I believe the type of robes men and women wore back then were slightly different so this indicates that God wants distinction in this area as well as hair length (1 Cor 11:14-15).

The main issue is modesty.
Yes God looks at the heart but we should refrain from being a stumbling block to others, as such Christian women and men should not dress immodestly; 1 Tim. 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.

I agree it is about modesty, but there are soooooo many things we are not doing that are "mandated" in the bible. You brought up several - braided hair, jewelry.... Even some of those women who wear dresses all the time braid their hair and wear jewelry - at least a wedding band.

My point is that you can dress modestly in slacks and you can dress like a skank in a long dress and a long sleeve blouse. It is about your heart. It is more about what you do with the clothes than wearing long dresses and skirts.

Pants made to fit women are not men's apparel, it is women's apparel. Now a man in a dress, that's crazy ;)

I think the whole point is not to confuse people with your appearance over which gender you are.

Women don't need to wear dresses to look like women, unless maybe they are extreme bodybuilders or something, lol.

IF .......... you actually BELIEVE the bible, then read DEUT chapter 22 verse 5. Again thats only IF....... you believe the Bible and in JESUS that HES not a liar. O.K.... here we go.... The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a womans garment, for all that do so are an Abomination unto the Lord thy God. Whos right, The Lord thy God ( Jesus Christ ) who cannot lie, or .........

ShawnSunshine: What I think this is about is: Is a man wearing whatever he's wearing to be or appear feminine? Or in the extreme to actually masquerade as a woman? which men do do. The same is true for women. Are they trying to appear masculine? I don't believe most women are doing this when they wear pants. I do believe there is an issue that's not overtly sexual, but more about women wanting to fill roles that are traditionally held by men, like leadership positions in the business world. That's a little trickier of an issue, but I do think women can be guilty of trying to "usurp" the authority of men in some ways, from a strictly power perspective & not a sexual one. I believe in women teachers & preachers, but you will hear the female preachers say they are in submission to their husbands. Who can deny that we have gender confusion in our society, and yes even in the church.

I've never really felt the urge to wear a dress.

Am I doing something wrong?

I don't think what we think with our carnal minds is very important in making this decision, it is what we think after we put on Christ, we renew our minds with the Holy Spirit. We are to listen to the Holy Spirit that would never direct us to ignore what any of scripture tells us. Scripture tells women not to wear pants.

I don't think that is the end of the story. Christ came to fulfill the law. We know there are God principles behind each law, God wants women to be women and men to be men, God wants us to not change his creations. I think we can wear the feminine pants without it saying to us or the world that we want to be like men, we don't honor how we were made.

How we dress does announce to ourselves and the world what we think of God. If we refuse to let what God wants for us be any part of how we dress, it shows.
