Hi Guys,

There seems to be a misunderstanding about the Law. What has happened to the law. Has it disappeared? Is it null and void now? Did God kill it?

Is the law holy, righteous and good? Or is it evil and wicked and we treat it like we treat sin……we abhor it and despise it and avoid it completely.

This discussion is about what relationship we have to the law after we are saved. Not about the salvation experience. So let’s please try to avoid the Works/Grace discussion and spring forward from being saved by grace through faith and now what?

And I’m not talking about the topic of keeping our salvation by works. That’s not at all what I’m referring to either.

So what is the relationship to the law now? Is it written on our hearts? Or is it dead and we have no relationship to it at all.

Please share scriptures with your comments so that we can see what God says about the law now that we’re saved.
When we sin, we get into trouble, lots of trouble if the sin is bad enough.

Seeing that God has written it in our hearts(Jeremiah 31:31-33 and Hebrews chapters 8 & 10), I'd say a whole lot.
Why do I get the feeling you are talking about works.:)Remember the spirits of those born of Incorruptible seed have been made perfect and sealed and are no longer under law.

people that are not In CHRIST are under law.

I wonder what happens if we break the law...
How do you break that which you are not under? We are in a New Covenant, no longer condemned for what we are incapable of doing, but saved through the work of Jesus Christ. We break the Law and His grace abounds, not that we do so in order for it to abound because we have been born-again, made anew. No longer slaves to sin but of righteousness, dead to sin and alive unto God.

The Lord receives the glory as He is faithful to finish the good work He started. Jesus, able to save us completely as He lives to intercede for us, forever. We do fall short of His glory, but how Christ has seated us in heavenly places. Praise the Lord! :)

Every time I look at the title of this thread, I want to break out in singing...what's law got to do with it, got to do with it...what's law but a second hand old covenant.

Tee hee...

Hi Stone,

I'm not referring to the Old Covenant. I'm referring to the New Covenant and asking how the law applies now.

It's the Law of Love.....Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.

If we love the Lord, by God's grace we will obey His commands. And by God's grace we're forgiven when we sin as we repent and confess our sin, He's faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The Law of Liberty....Being doers of the word and not hearers only.

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

Romans 8:4 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

When we're walking in the Spirit, the righteous requirements of the Law are met in us because we will obey the commands of Jesus that are now written on our hearts. We desire to obey now where before we didn't.

God changes our heart to not indulge the deeds of the flesh, but to walk in newness of Spirit. It becomes a joy to obey the commandments of the Lord.

That's what walking in the Spirit means, we are under the grace of God that works in us to do His good pleasure.

yes, of course, our Holy Jesus became our Holy Sacrifice -
He never, ever, said that we all didn't have to obey Him and
live according to His Way and Means...

Saved or no, if we don't resist the temptation to sin, problems lie ahead, huge problems, if our sin is deep enough.

The law is our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.

Once we come to Christ the law no longer has a role.

It has no ability to perfect us.
It has no ability to cause us to be obedient.
It has no ability to do anything except condemn.

Anybody that tells you different doesn't have understanding of the law.

There is therefore now no condemnation for them who are in Christ Jesus. That means the law no longer has authority over those who are in Christ Jesus. It plays no role.

What's wrong with works .... now that we're saved?

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:14-16

Aren't the laws written on your heart and mind like it says in Hebrews?

This is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, says the Lord:
I will put MY laws upon their heart,
And on their mind I will write them”

Given all the confusion on so many threads this a brilliant and simple explanation of what the law does and does not do!

It is not the law of the Mosaic covenant!
Ask yourself what actually indwells a new covenant believer?
The Holy Spirit right!
And what are the ethics of the indwelt Spirit?
The fruit of the Spirit!

The person In CHRIST that breaks the law might suffer the physical consequences here on the earth because we have not yet been glorified In our fleshly bodies for breaking the law but spiritually they are In CHRIST and will no longer have to fear death.

Those who are not In CHRIST are still under the law and condemned.
And He has fulfilled the law - it is now in the past tense!
This does not mean that we without an ethic - just that we are NOT bound to the law as given by God to Moses.
The condemnation of the law and the handwriting of ordinances that was against us have been nailed to the cross of Christ.....this fallacy of believers being BACK UNDER THE LAW is a lie and not true......
I cannot quote the rest that of the posts that spoke to me (system limit?).

But hey, this is already like my morning devotional. :) BIG AMEN

The law becomes a witness of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Thanks GnP,

Yes I realize the Holy Spirit now indwells us. :) I also realize that the Mosaic Law has been fulfilled by our precious Lord and Savior.

There is a law of righteousness that was embodied in the Old Covenant.

Romans 8:4 He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

So yeah, we're not under the mosaic law, but at the same time while Jesus condemned sin in our flesh, those who walk according to the Spirit will fulfilled in us as we obey the commands of Jesus.

We have what's called the Law of Liberty, The Law of Christ, a Law of Faith, the Law of the Spirit of Life.

What's kinda sad is that if you use the word 'law' everyone automatically thinks you're talking about the mosaic law.

And also, others think if you mention OT scriptures, you're preaching law.

So after salvation, we obey the commands to love the Lord God and to love our neighbor. By doing so we fulfill the moral principles of the law. There's an eternal moral law that we live by through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the new Law of of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.

So Jesus is the end of the Law - we're not under Law, but we're under God's Grace.

We're now by Grace obeying the Law of Christ, the Law of Liberty, the Law of Faith or the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ. I believe they all mean the same thing.

What does this Law look like?

Law of Liberty causes one to be blessed by being a doer and not a hearer only.
But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25

Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus - we'll fulfill the righteous requirements of the Law.
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1-4

Law of Christ
Bears one anothers burdens.
Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Loves God and loves neighbor.

And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40

Obeys all of the teachings/commands of Jesus
~ And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Matthew 28:18-20
~ If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
~ He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
~ Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. John 14:15, 21, 23
~ If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. John 15:10-11
~ For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3
~ Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it. 2 John 1:5,6

Law of Faith establishes the Law or upholds it.
Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one. Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. Romans 3:27-31

I think it's important that we all realize that because of the Law of Christ, when we've been born again and are in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit, we establish the Law of Moses, we uphold it through Christ who fulfilled it. In other words, our life is not lawless, we live a lawful life in Christ and by being in Christ, the Law is fulfilled in us as well.

Loving God with all our heart and our neighbor as ourself fulfills all of the Law and all of the Prophets....because love does no ill to his neighbor.
