I suppose Dude653 isn’t going to tell us why Baptists always skip the third verse of their hymns.

We have different problems, but that not necessarily less . James did say whenever we face trials of many kinds, count it all joy

Christ did say whoever wants to be a disciple must take up their cross and follow Him etc....

But we are equipped to handle them,

Look at Paul's life, He didnt have an easy time and He was one of the most powerful apostles of the day

Just in case I sound like I believe in a works salvation I dont... We are saved by grace....
I am just against fighting for the right to sin..............

when Christ made Himself example by defeating sin and handed us the power to defeat sin.....we dont always do the right thing, but He has given us the power...control over sin is not salvation but simply a demonstration of the power that resides within us

Remember this is the power that raised Christ from the dead. Are you really saying that in a moment of temptation that power cannot help us decide not to sin. we often do, but the point is....the power is there not to

nah Jadian you didn't give me that impression

some teach works salvation and legalism because it gives them power and control over other people and allows them to think they are better then others through their false piety.

I see no value in speaking or praying in tongues, unless someone understands what is being said and benefits by what is being said.
That is your opinion. Scripture plainly says it edifies you spiritually. It also says "I would that ye all spake with tongues". Paul also thanked God that he spoke in tongues more than the Corinthians.

Because you see no value does not mean there is no value.

If one chooses to do that, that is fine, but I don’t see how praying in tongues is a prerequisite for salvation.
It's not. In fact quite the contrary, a person who is not saved cannot speak in tongues.

I don’t believe speaking in tongues is important for edifying the spirit.
The bible specifically says
1 Cor 14:4) He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself;
Jude 20) But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

This is what I believe:

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt 4:17 RSV
That's great! But for Christians, speaking in tongues is beneficial.

I think many people use “speaking in tongues” as an ego trip. They like to brag about it, when in most cases, I am guessing, they aren’t really speaking in tongues.
Yes, you are guessing.

It's nothing to brag about. Every Christian should be doing it. It should be the norm.

If we want to go to heaven, we need to repent of our sin. When we do repent, our problems disappear—that is my experience. I think repentance, therefore, is a worthwhile activity.
Problems don't necessarily disappear.

2 Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

(I'm not picking on you, Res..... Just responding to your posts)

Sorry, just to clarify. Who in this thread is against speaking in tongues?

Not me. I believe in the word of God. Ever wonder why it says it would cease? The unbelievers would stop believing in the word of God and turn to believe a lie from hell. Be careful son.

  1. 1 Corinthians 14:39
So [to conclude], my brethren, earnestly desire and set your hearts on prophesying (on being inspired to preach and teach and to interpret God's will and purpose), and do not forbid or hinder speaking in [unknown] tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:38-40 (in Context) 1 Corinthians 14 (Whole Chapter)

It is God praying through your body. He tells us what he wants to tell us when we pray in the spirit. Times we are praying for someone across the planet being murdered and God is saving there life while we are obedient to him and pray. He doesn't have to tell us all we can't handle it all. The point is when we pray in the spirit power of God is flowing.

Yes, that´s true as 1 Corinthians 13:1 states.

However, speaking in tongues is a gift from God:

28And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues. 29 Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? 30 Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they? 1 Cor. 12:28-30

Every member of the church has a gift, not everyone has the same one but all of them are useful. In Mark 16:17, Jesus said that speaking in tongues is one of the signs of those that believe in Him. This has been very misused in churches today and it is not done decently and in order like the Bible tells us. But it is still useful in the church. God can communicate a message through it, God can speak to people who know that language in a very personal way (I know a story of this) and the church can be very blessed.

The important thing is to glorify God with whatever gift He has placed in our hands!

Thank you Jesus!

lol neither did Paul that's why he wrote this:

1 Corinthians 14:4-6
New King James Version (NKJV)

4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

I can't believe you sometimes. Paul understood tongues perfectly, they are to pray. Paul is saying it would do no good to get up and speak in tongues. People wouldn't understand it. He is saying when up at church speak in the language they understand that is how you teach. Has nothing what so ever about he still prayed in tongues. Of course he did.

No one I seen said it had anything to do with salvation. What I do see is people bring up salvation as you did. The bible says Gods children will be infilled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues, it is written. If you don't speak in tongues you can ask God to give you your gift. Why would anyone not want God to pray through them? Yes a person can be saved and never know what Gods gift is. Why they would want to stay in that place is something I don't understand. I want all God has for me. The word says they will all be filled not some. What has happened is some get taught you don't need it so they take that in and live with out it. It said all because God wanted all of his children to have it. It helps us and it helps others. But you have free will and you can decide to not have it. God will not force you.

  1. Acts 2:4
And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].
Acts 2:3-5 (in Context) Acts 2 (Whole Chapter)

I spent years not having my gift because I didn't understand it. Then I just started thinking if God said I should have it I want it. So I asked for it. My not understanding it and it kinda freaked me out is just what stopped me from it. My head was in the way.
