According to the Southern Baptist Convention, the average cost to support one international missionary in 2013 is $52,000 a year; $1,000 more than the 2013 median household income in the United States. Supporting an entire missionary family, of course, can raise that number significantly.

https://logoi.org/2013/10/how-much-does-a-missionary-cost/

I found three sources so I'm guessing it is a ballpark figure or an average unless you can provide better averages.

If you have kids and are a missionary, then do you really think that you can provide healthcare for less or not get them to a doctor in other countries because you should live on less?

Depends on where you are and what you are going to do.

I looked it up online for average costs. This link quotes about $100,000 a year so it could be $300,000 if you are going to be somewhere for three years:

http://www2.crcna.org/site_uploads/...xpense_Breakdown_Missionary_Costs_2011-12.pdf

It costs about $75,000 to be a North American Missionary:

Ridiculous.
I did mission work in East Tenn. for five years. 1990-1995
My wife and I worked in a convienence store full time and lived on $17,000 a year.
Me thinks some men are living high on the hog.

So what are you going to retire on?
Today's kids won't have social security unless something is done about it.
My dad is 94, lost his memory and he is in a retirement community and was in a memory unit until he fell and now he is on hospice.

I make more than that and I can't afford to shop at many stores other than Target, Kmart or Wallmart.
What hurt me a lot in life was the Christians who wanted my Christian books but didn't want to pay me for them.
Evangelism and supporting your pastor and your church takes money. It isn't cheap.
There is a Christian school that would like to expand but land isn't cheap as it would cost over a million dollars or a couple of million dollars today.

But of coarse follow your heart if it's sound in faith then trust it. The Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream but it was his faith in his heart that what he heard was true from God that moved him to complete the move. Jesus indeed followed his heart as well.

Matthew 4:12-13
12Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; 13and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

Matthew 2:13-14
13Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." 14So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.…

Luke 2:42-44
42And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast; 43and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But His parents were unaware of it,44but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a day's journey; and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances.…

And John took care of Mary after Jesus was crucified which means that people still have needs and it still costs to live.

John 19:27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

For those of you who gave me bible verses, thank you. That was what I was seeking more than counsel. As promised earlier, I'll give some more details>

Someone asked where in Nevada. The place we're looking at is Mineral County.

Here's the deal. In 2013 we lived in Reno but the job market was so bad that we finally took that leap of faith to Texas where all is relatively well. In Dallas, the Lord gave me a decent paying, fulltime job that I can take with me anywhere in the world as long as there's Internet connection.

Now, some of you think this move may be inspired by my emotions and, to some degree, you'd be right. Our grown daughters stayed behind in Reno when we moved to Texas. And now they're having kids and we miss them all. BUT, having said that, I'm trying to separate my emotions from understanding if this is God. That's why I asked for bible references.

As for missionary work, assuming that's what I'll be doing, the church I mentioned wants to train its people to build churches in smaller communities scattered throughout the state which have no churches. I don't know if that's what I'll be doing but I agree with it and will help out anyway we can.

Going back to the emotional thing, the one and only thing keeping us here in East Texas is our church family. We love them dearly and they would hate to see us go. We would miss them, but we also miss our family in Reno. So I MUST TRY to keep my emotions in check and see how much of this is God.

Hope I answered most of your questions.

We live a comfortable life on our SS checks.
We do not waste money on things we do not need.
Whats wrong with shopping at Walmart, Target, and K Mart? They have every thing I need.
I do support my church, and help others in need.
Churches don't need multi-million dollar buildings with their carpet, fancy windows and pews.
Christian schools are great, but the Word did not tell churches to build schools. Churches are to preach the Gospel.
When you retire be willing to downsize. Its not really that hard.
Missionary work, preaching the Gospel, sharing Jesus through books or any other means is an honor, not a way to make a living and put money away for an easy retirement.
Its about love and faith.
If God is in it He will provide.

When the Holy Spirit confirms something inside of you, how do you experience this? Some say they experience this by goosebumps washing over them and they know that this is His voice saying, go this way. Others describe knowing His voice, His confirmation of a direction, as being either an extreme sense of peace or an extreme lack of peace over the matter.

But how do YOU experience His voice, His confirmation?

I have asked God before if I should do a certain thing and waited for months but never received either a confirmation by His Spirit, His voice as I experience it NOR a discernible no. So I told Him, well, this is my plan. I am going to go ahead with it unless you let me know not to, knowing that a man makes his plans but YOU guide his steps and I trust You do that as you have said you do.

The apostle said he tried many times to go and visit some certain people but the Spirit kept preventing it. Just be attentive to if this begins to happen. You don't want to stubbornly beat a donkey who refuses to go on, failing or refusing to see as Balaam did.

I asked this question in chat but this needs to to asked again on a forum that I can refer to later.

My wife and I are both sensing a strong pull to the desert, almost as if the desert is calling out to us. Every time I see images of the desert, my heart pounds with a longing to be there. Of course, we won't be living in tents in the middle of nowhere. There is a small Nevada town in between Reno and Las Vegas with a nice Baptist church that we would probably plug into (I've already reached out to them on Facebook). We currently live in the piney woods region of East Texas.

MY QUESTION is does this sound like something God would do? To call someone to a geographical location, such as a coastal region, a mountainous area, or the desert? Where would I find that in the Bible?

** There's more to share about this decision later but for now I'm looking for Scriptural references. Plus I need to go out with my wife for a few hours so I'll be back.

THANK YOU ALL!

It sounds more like you both just want that. When did God say something about it?
We have nice country places here with cheap houses. It's lovely to live there, you can find a nice church, but I would never do that and move unless God specifically called me to go somewhere for some ministry He had for me. When I was married we only moved if God told us both to start a church in another place.

To the title of the OP.

No one is able nor should have advice strictly from the text of the Word. Seek first the Holy Spirit, and all confirmations will come when it is God's will.

Do you know someone who is spirit-filled? Ask and hear what they have to share with you on any given subject. Believe if the Holy Spirit has given wisdom on the subject the person in question will say yay or nay on the subject. If the person is not versed by the Holy Spirit on the subject, he or she will say so.

The bottom line, trust Jesus Christ..........

Is an internet message board really the wisest place to ask for advice on (a) what God wants you specifically to do or (b) where or what locations you should or shouldn't live with your family?

AHA!! :)o)

Until I read this from you, I was "thinking", it may well be a health related (physical) issue (and, perhaps there is something to that). As it's a much drier climate in Nevada.
Now, methinks, is more a family/love issue. I mean, GRAND BABIES!! :p

Most of all, God wants us to be happy!
Family, especially in these days?
Occupation? I think they have internet in Nevada....Don't they?:p
Church family? Methinks the Lord will see/will provide".......Even in the desert.
Pretty sure Mama wouldst be happy!.........And you know what Mama sez!
"If MAMA ain't happy?
ain't NOBODY happy!"
......and you?..........well?...........lemme tell ya........

Having a new gym in a school would cost a million dollars.

Growing up I found the Christian churches did not teach or have Christian libraries for Christians so I bought my own library worth of books in order to teach myself what the Church would not teach me.

Why are the number of radio stations secular on the radio dial today? Because Christians did not put their money into developing a method of communicating the gospel.

I went to christian events at colleges and when I told the students the truth, they looked at me like deers in the headlights because you pay some pastor to teach and no teaching goes outside of the Church.

I look at teachers like Harold Smith who preached his whole life and there are probably 100 or less of his sermons available on tape because the money went out the door and all of the teaching wasn't preserved to teach future generations.

Less than two cents on every dollar given at church ever goes into missions.

So why should I give when money isn't used to preserve teaching and money doesn't go into missions?
I should pay for the pastor's retirement though, right?

Does your church have a library? Why or why not? It means they don't care about the lost and teaching doesn't go outside of the church very much. I was at a church that told me I couldn't spend money on evangelism but they bought material instead of develop it themselves.

The world is a mess because our churches are a mess.

I would suggest praying for an absolute answer instead of "feelings". In these last days, never rely on feelings, when God can plainly call someone to a ministry.

Usually when God calls, He calls/shows a particular ministry to us before sending us to a particular area. As of yet, you haven't told us of any ministry calling. God is a God of order; first things first.

A couple of points.

Every church I have been associated with or have a personal knowledge gives at least 10% to mission work.
I know of one that gives over 50% to missions.

I will repeat what I said before--There is a mission field just outside your front door--Probably 80 to 90% of those who live in your neighborhood are lost--How much time do you spent taking the Gospel to them--That does not cost a dime, just your time.

The Lord's churches are not commanded to build schools, gyms, librarys, or multi-million dollar "church" buildings' They are commanded to preach the Gospel.

If you are led by the Holy Spirit to go do mission work, follow the example of Paul. Step out on faith, find a job where you are doing mission work if necessary. Don't worry about your retirement. Don't beg others (churches or individuals) to suipport you.

Now about my church.
We just began meeting in Dec 2015. We now have 11 in our group. We meet in homes. If and when our numbers are to large for homes, we will rent a small meeting place, than a larger meeting place etc.
We do not ask nor do we need anyones financial help. We pay our own way. I am now serving as Pastor. And no, I do not get paid, I don't need any pay. I live on my SS check.

Stop complaining, put your shoes and coat on, step out your front door and get busy. Your neighbors are dying and going to hell.

There is no requirement to build Christian schools but some kids need Christian schools and you can't just put them in a building and expect not to be a school and therefore not build gymnasiums. Some parents see their children going astray in public school so they put them in Christian school because they need it.

I witness to a lot of people but my wife doesn't think that all the witnessing is effective because there are a lot of people who don't know me and they don't feel like being nice to me and people make threats to me.
