The Casting Crowns Lyrics for.... "Jesus, friend of sinners."

Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away
We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth's become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they're tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I'm so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Yeah...

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who's writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they're the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

'Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
Yeah...
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet
I was not familiar with that one! It is easy to see your objections! I could add a few.

The Casting Crowns Lyrics for.... "Jesus, friend of sinners."

Jesus, friend of sinners,
Again, Jesus is not a friend of sinners. He is a friend of those who repent of their sins. There is a difference. For believers who are converted are never referred to as sinners but they are referred to as saints, kings, priests, and or as the Elect, etc.

we have strayed so far away
Why did they stray so far away?

We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth's become so hard to see
If you are a believer, the truth is not hard to see.

The world is on their way to You but they're tripping over me
Why is the world tripping over them? Are they doing something wrong?

Always looking around but never looking up I'm so double minded
James says, a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. He also says, Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you, cleanse your hands ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided
Who exactly is this plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided?

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
They must be referring to themselves and or anyone who thinks Jesus is a friend of sinners. For they use the word "our."

Also, another problem with this portion of the lyrics is that they believe it is wrong to point fingers in judgment. This is part of the meek and mild movement who think God's people do not judge. Paul says know ye not that ye shall judge angels? Jesus says judge not according to appearance but judge righteous judgment. Scripture says, do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather, reprove them.

Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees[
Is there a reason why His people would not be sorrowful or on their knees? Godly sorrow works unto salvation.

Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did
Okay, I can see the Westboro Baptist Church in this line of the lyrics with the whole signs thing.

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours[
Why wouldn't their hearts be led by mercy?

yeah...but it isn't serious as you think.
Scripture says let the dead bury their own dead. Do not be unevenly yoked with unbelievers. Going to the prom is not the issue. Going to the prom with an unbeliever is.

I'm 17, btw...lol,
Did not know that. I don't always look at the age. Sorry about that.

like I said, let it be a matter of conviction rather than personal beliefs.
Nowhere in Scripture is such a practice condoned, though. If they are an unbeliever. No problem. Let them be an unbeliever and hang out with unbelievers. But if they are a believer, they need to be with believers. For bad company corrupts good morals.

Not even Christians or Christians, so it doesn't really matter anymore. He isn't marrying or even dating her, he's taking her to PROM which isn't anything to throw a fuss about.
Taking her to the prom is a date. Just like taking a girl out for a cup of coffee is a date.

They aren't going to do anything but talk, dance, socialize and have an excellent time.
How do you know? Can you say this for every couple at the prom? No, of course not. Some do have intimate relations on prom night. That is kind of the point I am getting at.

Also, i am friends and do occasionally hang with atheists and other religions...I know...my young corruptible mind. Seriously though, it isn't that serious, and if it is, God will convict OP about it...lol.
Which is unbiblical. Study the Scriptures to show yourself approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV); And you will see what I am talking about. But if you don't care. That is your choice, my friend.

Anyways, may God bless you and please be well.

Hey I appreciate your concern.. but are you suggesting I should abandon all of my non-christian friends?
Yes. That is what I am saying. In time it will be easier to make such a decision when everyone moves off to go to different colleges and or jobs (to live in different areas).

Yes I certainly have stirred up a lot of hate :'D I'm not necessarily planning on dating her, and certainly not on having sex! However I do see that there could be a lot of temptation towards that. I think that by going to the prom with this girl and getting to know her she is likely to want to come to my church, whereas if I asked now she probably would be comfortable coming..
If your goal is to evangelize her, then by all means do so. But do not lose your focus and pray for strengh. If you feel the temptation of being with her might be too strong if by some chance she might make a move on you, then do not ask her out. If after prom she later rejects your proposal to go to church then keep your distance from her (And do not call her). Move on and you will find someone in time who does believe.

What if God is using this Christian young man to lead the young girl unto Him?
I would not be against him striving to evangelize her. But he should pray about such a thing before going and go by the leading of God. He should also pray so as not to be led into temptation, either.

BritishDave lives in England. There are no pagan nations nearby.
I assume he lived in England because of his name. Thank you.

As for the pagan nations statement: Well, you missed the point. It doesn't matter if it is pagan nations, atheists at school, false religionists in town. They are all unbelievers who have the capacity to lead a believer astray (If they are not careful).

I agree wholeheartedly! The fact that he announced that he intended to pray over the advice he was given relieved my concerns about that because he showed evidence of an active prayer life.

Hi everyone, I'm 16 and there's a girl at school whom I really like.. I was wondering whether or not I should ask her out / to the prom and I would appreciate your opinion on the matter. As far as I know she's not a Christian but she's nicer than most of the Christians I know and she seems open to religion :) Thanks in advance for the help!
I don't know man. Asking a girl to prom is like asking a girl to get into bed with you these days.
Solomon was a lot wiser than us, but not even he could prevent himself from being lead astray.

Again, Jesus is not a friend of sinners.

1 John 4:19
We love because he
[Jesus] first loved us.

"Thank you Jesus for opening our eyes to your Love even yet while we were sinners."

As far as the lyrics of Casting Crowns "Jesus, Friend of Sinners" it is about a Christian being judgmental and seeing the err in this.

We (Christians) should take note of this, for the only difference between directing someone in Christ's principles and judging them is God's Love in us.

1 John 4:20
Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, ...cannot love God...

1 John 4:20
Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, ...cannot love God...

The passage you refer to in Jesus loving us while we were yet sinners is in reference to His plan of redemption for us. In other words, He loved us even while we were sinners when He was going to the cross in order to redeem us. Christ does not love it when a person abides in their sin nor does He give them salvation if they continue to do so as a way of life, either.

As for the Casting Crowns song: Yes, I am aware that is the focus they were trying to go with, but they speak of the sinful problems they have as being their own. Such sins are not of the body of Christ. True believers love others. They do not hate others. Therein lies the difference. They make it sound like they believe that all of us sin and need to get better. But the true believer does not abide in unrepentant sins that lead unto death (Such as lying, murder, hate, lust, drunkenness, theft, etc.).

For you have quoted 1 John 4:20 as proof that a true believer cannot hate their brother. So the song refutes itself. For they take claim to the problems in the lyrics with words like "our", etc.

Wow.....a lot of fuss over a school dance......as we send our children five days a week to public schools....they are yoken all over with unbelievers.....my daughter just went to her prom last year....
Her date happened to be a christian boy....the prom is what you make it to be.....when the prom ended....was when my daughter came home...instead of the after parties that most do....however...
it was made more special...is they went the next day down to the boardwalk and went to the amusement park for the day......this way......there was not as much temptation.....
If this girl agrees to a date like that....I see no reason for you not to go.....just be a gentleman and
use your time sharing the Lord with your date......enjoy your youth...but be responsible......
BTW.....she had the memory of a wonderful time....and the joy it brought her was priceless...

This is really not a serious topic at all. A young man wants to ask a girl out to the prom. What is the big deal about this? I believe that dating is a part of the maturation process. Several respondents to this thread want to put the young man through so many changes just 'cause he happens to be interested in a girl. So much drama here. I did not say that I found this thread to be a laughing matter or amusing but rather that it had high entertainment value. Actually, it is rather amusing in a sad sort of way but it certainly isn't funny.

Our children must live in the world.......not of it.......when you pile a lot of laws....instead of the knowledge that God loves us.....and we want to live our lives His way...our children learn how to
forge their way through life....all they have to do is love the Lord and the law is how they choose
to live...young people ....are not stupid....they know right from wrong ...whether they choose to... is
what is our concern......Love the Lord with all your heart.....everything else falls into place.....
But we don't live under a rock.....God wants us to be joyful......how can we as Christians show unbelievers to come to God if we live a life that has no fun.......won't they think Gods way is
only suffering .....who are we ever gonna lead to Christ.....so many serious people.......wow.

Dave,

When believers try to shelter young people from the World, instead of helping them learn how to live in the World without compromising their testimony; they are wrong.

As I mentioned earlier, the most important responsibility God has given believers is to lead unbelievers to Him.

Living in isolation from the World prevents any witness you have from serving the Lord.

Your interest in the girl is fine if and only if your desire to serve the Lord comes before your romantic interest.

If you choose in everything to put God in first place then you will be an influence without being influenced.

You can't serve God in your own strength [ as Samson, David, Solomon demonstrate]; but, God can and will use you if you allow Him to work through you instead of trying to do things for him. Remember you need His help far more than He needs yours.
