I think some people forget that the purpose of the Bible is to lead us to the Lord – not the other way around.

Actually, no. The purpose of the Scriptures is for Wisdom, teaching, admonishing, Grace.

Colossians 3:16-17
[SUP]16 [/SUP] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
[SUP]17 [/SUP] And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

First we are Predestined by God to accept Him. Then the Holy Spirit brings us to Him. The Scriptures have nothing to do with bringing us to God.

No. It's all about our Father in heaven. He is the life-giver. He is the savior. Until we find him we have nothing. The Bible is meant to help us find him.

I don't agree. I owned a Bible for years and never found God. Even after I bought my "first" one in December and threw myself into reading it, I didn't find God in those pages. I found a lot of truth, good stories, life lessons, historical accounts, rules, laws, parables, prophecies, etc. I found God in my heart, not a book.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I can see where you are coming from, but based on my own personal experience, without God being in my heart, reading the Bible would have just been reading another book. I'm one of those "believe less than half of what you read and almost none of what you hear" type of pessimists though, so take it for what you will.

John 5:39-40

"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life."

Depends on where you are at in your life. As a little girl, all scripture to me was from the very lips of God. Since faith comes from hearing the Word, it helped me. I needed the verses. I believed because the bible confirmed his presence.

Yet, we can't put God in a box of words in a book. There have been many people I know who have had personal encounters with Christ in some way. Even through the testimonies of others. They were the "fragrance of Christ" to the world.

I'm not saying you need the Bible to find the Lord. I'm saying the purpose of the Bible is to help you find him - to teach you about him. Paul's statement in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ("Pray constantly") is great instruction.

In actuality I suspect the Lord finds us, as opposed to us finding him, but even so, it is the Lord who is the life-giver, savior, and (I forgot to mention this in an earlier post), the teacher.

Some people read the Bible and think they are saved. The Bible doesn’t save. The Lord saves. If we read the Bible, we will learn about the Lord.

And you are right, it’s the personal relationship with him that counts.

I like your post. I want to say, though, that we need to pray constantly (1 Thess 5;17). This helps us develop a personal relationship with the Lord, assuming we are listening to what he is saying to us.

Romans 1:16-17
King James Version(KJV)

16.)For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17.)For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

KJV.1John4;17,17.Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment;because as He is, so are we in this World.; KJV.1John3;2,2.Beloved, now are we the Sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.

There are Atheists whose knowledge of the Bible would put the average Christian to shame. A person has to believe that the Bible is from God in order to benefit from it oyjerwise its just another book.

Without the Scriptures, how would you know the experience you had was of God or a deceiving spirit or an ulcerated tummy?

The bible is for instruction in righteousness.

A person can hear & receive the gospel of the grace of God, and become saved, without ever touching, owning or reading a bible.

If need be, the Lord can teach us what he needs to teach us, without using the Bible. In other words, if there is no Bible around, the Lord can teach us what we need to know. The Bible is a tool he can use to teach us. If we have access to one, we should read it. If you had an ulcerated tummy, wouldn't you have a stomachache?

If you knew nothing of the bible, how would you know what salvation is? The bible's central message is redemption through Jesus Christ.

If needs be he can heal you without a doctor and sustain us with air alone but he chooses to use means like His Word and food.

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
(1Co 1:21)
It's the way God has chosen.

Thanks. Then here is a bonus...

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
