To put on the whole armour of God is to clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself is our armour.

Ephesians 6:12 - For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 - Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 - Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth (of Jesus Christ), and having on the breastplate of Righteousness (of Jesus Christ);

15 - And your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace (of Jesus Christ);

16 - Above all, taking the shield of Faith (of Jesus Christ), wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 - And take the helmet of Salvation (of Jesus Christ), and the sword of the Spirit (of Jesus Christ), which is the Word (Jesus Christ is the Word) of God.

From head to toe, mind, body & spirit, we are covered with Jesus Christ.

Praise and glory to the Father and His Messiah!

PS 91:2-6, "We say to Yahweh: You are our refuge and our fortress! You are our Father in You we will trust! Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome; deadly, pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings will you trust. His truth will be your shield and buckler. You will not be afraid of the terror of night, nor of the arrow that flies by day. Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday."

Great post! I recall having some old notes on this subject, dusted them off, so here they are.

Points on the whole armor of God against the devil from Ephesians 6:13-18:

The girdle or belt of truth, your integrity.
The breastplate of righteousness, the believer's purity.
Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
The shield of faith, quenching the fiery darts of the wicked.
The helmet of salvation, assurance and a sound mind.

A soldier in Paul's day had a leather girdle that he tightened about his waist to protect himself and carry his weapons of warfare, such as a dagger or sword, that girdle to the Christian integrity. You need integrity and purity in your heart, no unconfessed or unrepented sin. Who would not give up dirt for diamonds, hog swill for nectar? The gospel of peace gives you standing, knowing there's nothing between your soul and the Savior: you are at peace with God.

The breastplate of a soldier was sometimes made of woven chain. Whatever the material, the purpose was the same – to cover the soldier's vital organs. The enemy wants to attack you not only with lies, but also with impurity. He wants you to read filthy magazines, watch immoral movies, and engage in all temptations of the flesh. The bottom line is that the devil wants to get into your heart and mind. He's looking for a crack in your armor. And don't be fooled. The devil knows where that crack is.

The girdle is integrity, the breastplate purity, and the shoes tranquility, peace. A Roman soldier needed good shoes in order to be victorious on the battlefield. Often times, his shoes would have hobnails on the sole, very much like football cleats, because, when they were fighting, they needed solid footing from which to move. Jesus gives peace, and unless you have peace, you can never make war. Sounds like a contradiction, doesn't it? But you've got to have the peace of God in your heart first. When the devil comes against your tranquility, he throws out stones and briars of doubts and discouragement to cause you to stumble.

The Roman soldier's shield measured approximately two by four feet and was made of wood covered with leather. In that day, soldiers dipped arrows in oil, then lit them and shot them at the enemy. These shields were vital to protect the solider from getting burned. For the shield of faith, faith is what keeps the devil's darts away, the believer's certainty against doubt, a fixed standard of right and wrong. One must be locked on the fact that the Bible is the word of God. The devil in the Garden of Eden first caused doubt as to the word of God.

The helmet of salvation is the believer's sanity. A soldier used a helmet to protect his head, because, if his head was wounded, he wouldn't be able to think. Every believer needs to have the mind of Christ under the control of Almighty God. When a person is saved, for the first time he has his right mind. A person without the Lord Jesus Christ has a form of insanity. They do not operate with the mind that God made them to have. The most important thing for you to have at all times is an assurance of your salvation.

You need integrity, purity, tranquility, and certainty. Keep your mind protected, to be delivered from evil, the believer's sanity. A person who is devil controlled is not in their right mind. You must guard your mind!

Each piece of armor is actually the Lord Jesus Christ, these attributes of our Lord: you are just putting on the Lord Jesus Christ. Each of these pieces of armor represent Jesus.

Prayerfully put on Jesus. He is Truth, He is Purity, He is Peace, He is Sure. He is the One who bought your redemption with His blood.

Let us be diligent in our study and understand one thing about the passage mentioned by the OP: A sword is not only part of our armor. It is a weapon of offense, not just of defense.

".........having done all, to stand."

Stand is to assume a position of offense or defense. Strong's says stand means to stanch, which is to stop or check. Put your armor on, step into the battle, raise your sword and stop the enemy.

That is one of the best explanations on the Scriptures I have seen on a Christian forum in a long time.

the phrase "of God" means infinite
therefore the "armor of God" would be infinitely strong impenetrable armor.

Thank you! That wasn't from me, rather notes on a teaching of Ephesians. With me, much complex theology is mainly passing information on from the adults.

Is indeed a great forum. The only thing not mentioned enough is our only weapon (besides psychomom wanting a chainsaw lol) is the sword.

The sword is the Word of God. How can a weapon be a word? Think upon the Word of God for a moment. His word is Powerful. He created with words He destroyed with words He healed with words. The Word of God is a living Word. The Word of God can pierce the heart it can cut deep and if ignored the Word of God can kill. The Word of God is also Jesus and think...He can pierce our heart He can cut deep and ignorance of Him leads to death.

OK....so just HOW does one WEAR the armor? Take care of the Armor? Most people just recite the verses without a clue as to HOW. And then, basically, that wonderful spiritual suit of armor sits in the corner, rusting, ineffective...and so not doing what it is intended to do.

".........having done all, to stand."

Stand is to assume a position of offense or defense. Strong's says stand means to stanch, which is to stop or check. Put your armor on, step into the battle, raise your sword and stop the enemy.
The only way to use the sword is to say, “It is written…” That is why we must read and study the Word of God and get it down into our hearts. You must be familiar with the Word in order to speak it.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, the Lord's weapon was the Word of God. "IT IS WRITTEN..."

The Lord Jesus was tempted in three areas: the body/flesh, the mind/soul, and the spirit.

Temptation #1 - Body/Flesh
Jesus was being tempted to take care of His own needs, His own desires of the flesh, to be self-sufficient. This was the temptation to lust, wanting what you want when you want it and not depending on God to meet your needs. And the Lord did not give in to the temptation. Jesus did not sin. Jesus said:
“It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Matt 4:4 (from Deut 8:3)

Temptation #2 – Mind/Soul
Jesus was being tempted to doubt God the Father, to test God to see if He would really follow through with His promises. This was the temptation to worry, to doubt, to be anxious and doubt God as a faithful, loving Father. And Jesus did not give in to the temptation. He did not sin. Jesus said:
“It is written again, Thou shalt not test the Lord thy God.” Matt 4:5-7 (from Psalm 91 and Deut 6:16)

Temptation #3 – Spirit
Jesus was tempted to worship the things of the world and not worship God; to count things, possessions, vanity, His own life more worthy than God the Father. This was the temptation of idolatry. And Jesus did not give in to the temptation. He did not sin. Jesus said:
“Then saith Jesus unto him, Away with you, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.” Matt 4:8-10

Again, the whole armour of God is 100% Jesus Christ. His integrity, His faith, His purity, His righteousness, His Gospel of peace, His mind-set, His Truth. The Word said Abraham believed and it was counted to him as righteousness. THAT is what the Lord wants us to do: BELIEVE.

Believe that Jesus covers us by His Blood Atonement, that we are forgiven of our sin and clothed in HIS righteousness and that God the Father will take care of all of our needs.

I am going to prayerfully go over each of these pieces of armor again and see how they are distinct from another (Yet all tied together in representing Christ). I think it is good to see how we can apply each of these pieces of armor in our every day lives.

So far I see it as:

Helmet of salvation is confession and repentance (1 John 2:1) (1 John 1:9). To me this is how one makes sure they either get right with God and or they maintain their good standing with Him. Without this helmet, we are not saved. If we abide in Christ, then we are saved (1 John 5:12).

Breast plate of righteousness is our holiness and fruitful works for the Lord. We have to keep on our God in living righteous before the Lord or the devil can pierce a believer's heart with sin so as to be a slave to it.

The shield is one's faith. It is our trust in God's Word even when we don't understand it. That every single word in God's Word is perfect and without error and true. We cling to these words so as to live out our lives in service to our Lord. We trust in God by faith in His Word. This is a trust in God's Word even when times are tough, too. It is about trusting in doing all of what God wants us to do according to His Word even when it is hard for us. For those who did not have no root in the Word fell away due to persection and or the cares of this life.

The Sword is wielding the Word of God as a weapon. This is knowing how to stop the enemy by with quoting Scripture to people and to dark spirits. For it is the Word of God that will pierce people's hearts and it is the Word that will shine out the darkness within the valley of the shadow of death.

Feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace. This is preaching the gospel in peace to others. For wielding the Word of God as a sword is similar to this. But the difference here is that we stand on the gospel. Our mission is not just to quote Scripture alone and debate on various topics in God's Word alone (In feeding the sheep and or putting bits and pieces in the horses mouths to lead them about); But our primary mission is to lead people to Jesus Christ. The great commission.

Loins gird about with Truth: This one is a little mysterious to me. Being righteous would appear to cover this category. For can one be righteous and not be truthful? In other words, you can't lie and be righteous. When we quote God's Word we are also promoting Truth. I will have to research this one some more and get back to folks on this one.

Peace, love, and blessings be unto you all.

A fine point, and it's not to nitpick anything, rather something that's always stuck in my mind about the temptation of our Lord: was He really tempted? I think not, from the standpoint of being in a quandary as to whether He should take the devil up on anything, as we may have been tempted in our lives to consider whether to do some evil, some sin. Here is why,

James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.

Just a thought.
