Notice that there are 31 chapters? Read a chapter a day every day and on 30 day months, read two chapters on a day and you will complete Proverbs twelve times in one year. Now, add to that regimen five Psalms every day and you will complete Psalms and Proverbs twelve times in a year. Do this along with your regular minimum of thirty minutes of study every day.

"It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife,
but every fool will be quarreling." Prov. 20:2

This seems like almost a warning for this forum. I try to avoid quarreling more and more these days, although sometimes I do get drawn into the fray.

1 Samuel 24:13
As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

Matthew 12:33
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

"Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness
will find life, righteousness, and honor." Prov. 21:21

I love this very positive proverb, as it instructs us the way to walk!

Whoever digs a pit will fall into it;
if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them.

(Proverbs 26:27)
Poor Rolling Stones. ;)

My favorites are about discretion - I have avoided so many problems whenever I was patient with talking and reacting instead of voicing everything or arguing/reacting right away. I discovered that when I am patient the things sort themselves out in my favor on their own accord, and exactly because I kept quiet.

Psalms 112:5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
Proverbs 1:4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
Proverbs 2:11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
Proverbs 11:22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

It ought to be impossible for any Christian not to "like" a proverb, no matter how much it hurts the flesh.
Proverbs 14:30 (KJV) [SUP]30 [/SUP] A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

I don't know about that! I sure didn't like this one, especially when my husband decided it was his favorite Proverb! LOL

"It is better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife." Prov. 21:9

"The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
is riches and honor and life" Prov. 22:4

Is this applicable to New Testament believers? There are so many in countries being persecuted for being Christians, far from riches, honor and even life. Or perhaps it is speaking of metaphorical riches, honor and life? The blessings of being "in Christ?"

Biblical riches have nothing to with money. You can be rich yet miserable.

I doubt God will allow anyone to have riches and honor and life abundantly while not having humility and fear before the Lord.

"Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding." Prov. 23:23

Since Jesus is "the way, the truth and the life" our hope comes from holding close to him, and following him.

A couple of "MyVerbs..........."

Foolish man says: "I am good."

Wise man says: "I will never be good enough."

Foolish man says: "I built all of this myself."

Wise man says: "I can do nothing on my own."

(leaning heavily on Scriptural teachings............... :) )

Proverbs 10:12
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

This spoke to my soul in a dire time of my life, it holds weight, substance, and ultimate truth....
God is always there.. Period.

Proverbs 15:3
The eyes of YAHWEH is in all places watching over the wicked, and the good.

Speaking of the wicked I always loved this verse, I recall the first time it dawned on me this is what the wicked do, its their words that lie in wait for others in this manner

Prov 12:6a The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood:

Isaiah 29:21
That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.

Jerm 5:26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait
, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

And we in Christ this very thing

Luke 11:54 Laying wait
for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

Like little stalkers

Mat 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

Then if you repeat proverbs again and add the last verse in you can even see our Lord as the mouth of the upright

Prov 12:6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood:

but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

And we know that

good and upright is the Lord,
who says,

Luke 21:15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

Even shown in Stephen

Acts 6:10
And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

Showing the mouth he would give them would be the spirit by which he spake

Which seems to indicate he would deliver them from their mouths

His words are truly amazing just as He is

i have kind of a different view on proverbs from many christians apparently...i don't see its wisdom as all that profound...and i don't think it was -intended- to be especially profound...

when i was reading proverbs i had trouble with the fact that the vast majority of it is simply common sense that everyone should already know...

then i paid attention to how many times proverbs refers to a parent instructing a child...and i realized that solomon's intention was actually to write a book for instructing children and young people on the -basics- of wisdom...it was designed as a guide for teaching your children common sense...

so solomon really never intended for it to be a 'best of' collection of his most wise sayings...instead it was more like 'wisdom 101' or 'wisdom for dummies'

the fact that proverbs seems profound to many people nowdays really says less about the book and more about how 'common sense isn't common' any more...

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning,
it shall be counted a curse to him.
