To OneFaith on post #96, do you always tell others that "No worries, I pray for you..."? If not, that may have been the problem. In this case I sense that you are saying because you are praying for this individual, he has no worries. The emphasis doesn't seem to be on God doing the Protection. I can understand why it seemed OK from your point of view, but the real cause of the safety may not have come through to your son. Athletes have a problem of overconfidence. You may have become overconfident that God and everyone else would naturally understand that you were invoking God's power for safety.
The other option would be that your son became overconfident and was careless because he felt that God would protect him even if he was not as careful as he should have been. Then again it could be both or none of theses reasons. Just a thought.
