An appeal to authority only happens when you cite someone who isn't an expert in the field. I'm not using the argument "so and so said it therefore it's true". I'm presenting the evidence plus the scholarship to back it up.
If you disagree with the scholarship then give actual reasons why and show how the findings are incorrect.
By that same reasoning, Merlin was an actual wizard and the legends about him are true.
