John 20 the resurrected Jesus breathed on them and said receive ye the Holy Spirit. Long before Pentecost Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to those gathered in the upper room.

Peter at Pentecost was filled with the Holy Spirit for power not baptized in the Holy Spirit as some wrongly teach. The Greek makes it clear. If we fail to teach the bible accurately we teach error.

So Acts 1.4 is wrong?

[SUP]4 [/SUP][SUP][d][/SUP]Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for [SUP][e][/SUP]what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; [SUP]5 [/SUP]for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [SUP][f][/SUP]with the Holy Spirit [SUP][g][/SUP]not many days from now.”

The Bible says baptized with the Holy Spirit and you say that's wrong.

WHY?

The Bible also says 120 were filled, not Just Peter, so why do you keep lying about what the Bible says?

Who here has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Now I know there's alot of you who don't believe Gifts are for today but I strongly disagree. Im from a pentacostal background and I have seen God move...Anyway! Is their anyone who can tell us about your experience on how you received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
I can say I have had spiritual experiences, of praying, and being touched with a real love and elation. When I was a teenager I was praying with a group, and it was like seeing the vastness of God, then shrinking down to a man and finally to die. It was like being touched and elated. I had never felt that before. I had similar experiences in worship times, in quiet times, so I have been perplexed about the idea of a single event rather than times of communion and blessing.

I have had people lay hands on me and nothing happened, and some who were called specially to pray by the Lord, and I was singing in tongues, the only one in the group who were all strangers to me.

What has stayed with me, is though these times come and go, it is the love, the abiding presence and reality of Jesus that consumes me, that pushes me forward. We all have roads to walk, like an enormous tapestry that the Lord weaves through time. So I just stand in wonder and praise His name.

For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

And they were.

Water baptism never saved anyone. Spirit baptism saves everyone.

What does that have to do with gifts?

The HS baptism is the holy spirit baptizing us into Christ.

The anointing of the spirit, God anointing you with spiritual oil (the holy spirit)

this is where the gifts come from.

He said unto them, ‘Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?’ And they said unto him, ‘We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.’ And he said unto them, ‘Unto what then were ye baptized?’ And they said, ‘Unto John’s baptism.’ Then said Paul, ‘John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.’ When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Acts 19:2-6.....so do I call this the baptism of the Holy Ghost?

The bolded parts speak of the anointing of the spirit. not the baptism.

What is the baptism of the holy ghost???what does it mean to be fulfilled with the Holy ghost?
rom 6. [SUP]3 [/SUP]Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? [SUP]4 [/SUP]Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

1 cor 12. 1 Cor 12: 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— vwhether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.

col 2: 11 - 12 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body 8of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? I'm obviously out numbered here by cessationist...I'm pretty sure you guys knew what I mean when I said baptism of the holy spirit...I'm meant the Holy ghost.
wow what an attitude.

It is not a cessationalist topic. we are discussing what the baptism of the holy spirit is. Not whether gifts are still in effect.

Do you want to know what the actual baptism of the spirit is. or not learn anything?

Baptism of the Holy Spirit washes us, and makes us clean.

titus 3: 5. the washing and renewal of the spirit. is the baptism of the spirit.

The Holy Spirit coming into and filling us is the anointing of the spirit.

1 John 2:27 [Full Chapter]
But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

The holy spirit does not only teach us all things, he gifts us with spiritual gifts.

If you want to talk about gifting, thats fine, But it would be nice if you also want to know the proper term to use to know where it comes from.

I was saved, therefore, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

I've got the Pentecostal background too, but it really messed me up for quite some time. When I was saved, the Pentecostal that taught me "Now what?" also taught me that the sign of the baptism in the Holy Spirit was speaking in tongues. I spent a good ten years of my Christian life thinking I wasn't saved because I can't do tongues.

Later, I had someone help me figure out what I already said, "I was saved, therefore, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit."

Sure, gifts are for today. Even tongues, but that is the least of the gifts, and gifts from God is kind of like asking God for patience. It's something we tend to ask for and then might well regret asking for for the rest of our lives. He's going to give us gifts and he's going to give us patience if it kills us! That's who he is. A Dad gives the best for his kids, even if the best overwhelms. In God's case, everything he does overwhelms, and therefore we need him to stabilize us.

In my case, just like asking for patience didn't work out for me too well, (and asking God for patience is like asking God to give you one problem after another, and then mount some up all at once, because, guess what? All those problems teach us patience, whether we wanted it or not. lol), asking for specific gifts didn't work for me either. I didn't get the nifty, keeno gifts. I got the gifts that best fit me to serve the church. I'n not a teacher, evangelist, prophet, or even polyglot. I'm an administrator (as in organize stuff, not as in "boss"), apologetic, encourager, smack-you-in-your-face realist, and discerner. I'm mostly a behind-the-scenes organizer/paperpusher, because my ego doesn't grace me with the qualities of a leader. (Ego -- WAY too big.)

Still? What church couldn't use someone who can put together a Sunday bulletin, a membership directory, a potluck dinner or meals for someone in need, or can deal with the full-of-herself/scared-others-will-reject-her person? God tends to put us places where he needs us and we need him. So, his gifts always work, even if we don't believe in gifts.

(Oh, and now I'm not Pentecostal. I'm evangelical. Worse yet, reformed. lol)

Yup, and ever since, we haven't had to wait that long. (Check out Acts. It was already happening before the close of the Bible.)

there may be multitudes who 'truly believe' but receive no forgiveness, no truth, nor spirit nor life --- the examples in scripture OT and NT prove this.
Not disagreeing with you. I simply don't see that. Can you give me three names? I'll do my own research, so I'm not asking for a full lesson. I just need three names to start with.

besides 'ghost' being very inappropriate and inaccurate, that had nothing to do with my post.

see previous posts to see why I posted.

and what's a 'cessationist' (someone against the civil or vietnam war? or who wants texas to succeed from the union? :) ) and why bring it up at all ?
I honestly don't know what a cessationist is in this reference, however, I'd love South Jersey to secede from North Jersey. ;)

Oh, cool! Thanks. I really didn't know that. It probably helps that I've never been in such a church.

It was not until Jesus had ascended that His Apostles received the baptism of the holy Spirit. There are listed several folks in the New Testament that had died or were killed/martyred before they had been baptised in the holy Spirit, like John, the thief on the cross and Stephen. Who would have the audacity to claim that they are 'not saved' and not in heaven right now? I surely wouldn't. ALL that accept JESUS as Savior instantly have the Holy SpiRIT abiding in them. That is how GOD works, CHRIST IN us, via HIs Spirit. Whether we activate or operate within HIS spirit is total choice on our part and to our benefit. I have several spiritual gifts that I am thankful for. GIfts come and go, and can change. Some CHristians have private prayer tongues, some haven't just yet. It's the same thing for those who haven't spoken yet in a spiritual tongue. John G. Lake had been healing and raising people from the dead for ten years before he was baptised in the Spirit. If by chance he would have died before that occured, you think GOD will punish him and send him to hell? You really have to look at this through Spiritual eyes before you get so legalistic and heavenly minded that you're no earthly good to anyone.

The Holy Spirit working within is for character and fruit.

The Holy Spirit working upon is for power and witness, this is where the gifts come through.

A great teaching on receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit: "Word Spirit Power" by R.T. Kendall, Charles Carin, & Jack Taylor. Also another good one is "in His Face" by Bob Sorge. I'm not in any way saying they have the corner on it, but it has really opened my eyes to how so many believers are not walking in freedom and are even committing suicide and horrible turning away from God because the church has failed to really tell what all of the Bible says. I believe that our generation is the generation who has looked everywhere and are tired and want a real God with a true group of people who really care about God and not just the buildings, the programs, the money RIGHT?

I'm not going to debate the point. I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit while in jail seeking the Lord as a Christian, which happened 10 days after receiving Christ in a public church setting which happened after 3 months of mental and spiritual struggle which happened a year after the Lord began slowly but surely opening my eyes.
But I won't debate this, that's me and perhaps others have had it way differently.

You know I dont know about denominations that have to do with supernatural spirituality and denominations that dont and such but when i was saved it was a very supernatural experience, there was a an amazing power and energy burning inside me something so powerful and amazing that simply cannot explain it other than it was exactly like fire it was intense it was overwhelming is was powerful and it was beautiful. But not everyones experiences are the same I notice some are more prone to supernatural events than others, some like me and others have them all the time some never have them in their entire lives but what the baptism of the holy spirit is to me is simply accepting the Lord in your heart. If you begin and continue to show fruit and attributes of his heart then you were indeed baptized by fire even if you didnt feel it. I think being anointed and being baptized by the holy spirit are one in the same and I think the holy spirit and the holy Ghost are one in the same

I will agree that it doesn't actually for word say that we must have the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be saved... This is something to seek the Lord on. That would mean many before Christ would not have. However, God is not a God bound by time as we are. What is impossible for us is possible for God. I mean Isaiah clearly wrote about seeing Christ on the cross as if He was looking right at it, just as John (the beloved) wrote about Heaven as if He were there. God was perfectly capable of revealing Himslef and touching lives and hearts any way He desired. Trust me, I was an atheist when God came to show me He was real. Now I will ask ech of you, have you looked for His face? Have you seen His suffering? Do you hear His voice? If not, I highly recommend that you seek Him every chance you get. And learn as much as you can about the Spirit and the Word on this matter. Ask God sincerely to remove your own thoughts and the voice of the enemy... Then listen in the quiet alone. I pray that He enlighten the eyes of your understanding and enlarge your heart for more of His love. Shalom~ Godly Soul Peace
