So basically, there's this really old book, talking about how there's a God
and telling all of these stories. How can you know that it's not made up?
First, Archaeology Proves Bible History Accurate.
Second, without faith, you can not know or understand God.

The woman was created for the man? And the man dominates the woman? What?
I won't even start with Leviticus.
Eve was created as a helper, helper does not mean slave. its more like a life mate.

No offence but to say you were a Christian and then an atheist......means you never were a Christian to begin with.....John said clearly...Those who go out from us were never of us to begin with.....and yes the bible speaks to many things cultural as well as biblical that gets rejected or denied by unbelievers and society itself......The just shall live by faith.......

Lol in case you haven't noticed already, openly stating that you are an atheist and wanting to start a logical discussion causes a bombardment, which makes meaningful, 2-way discussions next to impossible. If I were you, I would pick an intelligent person or 2 and private message them with questions. This fully gets your ideas out there (and allows you to quickly correct any misunderstandings) and vice-versa.

That everyone seems to skip?

First of all, I'm an atheist. I was Christian but as I grew up, I realized that I don't believe in God. It doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, even though I'm not a believer, I find religions very interesting. One of my 2018 goals is to read the bible, the whole thing. So yesterday I started and already on the first pages I found something very questionable in Genesis. The woman was created for the man? And the man dominates the woman? What?
I won't even start with Leviticus.

I also wonder why so many Christians never read the bible. How can you believe in something when you haven't even read your holy book?
So please tell me, how can you believe in something that has so many questionable things?
I have read the Bible.. From Genesis 1 to the end of the Book of Revelation..

First thing that people must establish in their own mind..

Disagreement with the written will of God does not prove Gods non- existence.. You cannot say "I do not like what God says about this issue or that issue and then use that as your foundation which you build your disbelief in the existence of God upon..

A lot of Christians do not read the Bible because they have faith in their pastor / preacher / priest to tell them everything that need to know.. Reading the entire Bible takes a strong commitment because it is a collection of 66 books and it is a very long read.. People just don't want to do all the hard work that reading the entire Bible takes..

As far as the "woman made from a man and made to be help for a man" I have no problems with that.. If that's the Way God created woman and if that's what God created woman for then so be it... Again if He is God .. And i believe He is.. Then He is infinity more wise then me and i am assured he knows what He was and is doing.. If people have a problem with the will of God then the problem is with them.. It is not with God..

Hello Carla
Welcome to CC . I understand your new and a nonbeliever so I am going to give you a few tips that can help you get some answers to your questions. First thing is most of us here know the Bible to be without error . So the phrase questionable passages of scripture may be taken as a slap even if you do not intend it to be so. So please be mindful of that . Also we are a popular site so we often get the atheist poster with nearly the same questions from atheist websites and books . Most questions are intended as gotcha questions. So please keep that in mind. I hope your sincere and I know many here can help you as long as your willing to meet us halfway.
I can understand you would have some questions about many passages of scripture. Just from the fact you have not read the Bible before and that you are a atheist. I was a atheist up until I was in my mid to late 30s . So I understand some hesitation when it comes to difficult passages of scripture. As a atheist I knew it all I read many of the popular atheist authors and visited all the cool atheist hangouts both on the net and my neighborhood. For me the first thing I had to get thru my head is that the Bible is not a science book an we can not understand all of it with a modern secular mind set . Another thing is the modern Bible in German or English is a translation so there are words or concepts that are not easily understood without a good lexicon. Or more importantly the aid of The Holy Spirit or a believing friend. If you just read it in a year , you may know what is said but understanding it may be difficult. For example you have a question about why Eve was created. Yes woman was created to help man but the word helper in Hebrew has a sense of aid or to assist in some way
“Helper” (Hb. ‘ezer) is one who supplies strength in the area that is lacking in “the helped.” So she is not a servant to Adam. Eve is more a kin to a partner.
Ok as to your other question why many Christians have not read the Bible? That would have to be addressed by each individual. Also the question or the answer to it dose not add or takeaway from the validity of the Bible or God’s existence.
Example why don’t folks read their car manual before driving a car . Just because someone hasn’t read it doesn’t mean the car won’t work or that the manual is wrong, dose it?
For your last question . If your looking for answers be more specific. If not please drop rhetorical questions it doesn’t help either of us .
Blessings
Bill

Why did Jesus die for my sins?
I wasn't even there yet.
God has an eternal perspective.. Meaning He can see all history, past and future and knew you before you where even born.. He knew your life before you lived it.. Therefore God paid the penalty for all peoples sins from the first to the last person.. But for that payment to come into effect in the lives of each individual, That individual must accept the gift of Jesus payment of their sin fine.. People need to believe and trust in Jesus before the gift of salvation can be had..

Okay look.
I need you to explain the bible to me, please.
Yes I know, I'm only 17 and have no life experience yet. But I did think about what I believe. It's not like I wouldn't want to believe, it has a lot of advantages. But I can't because I can't believe it. I just can't.

So basically, there's this really old book, talking about how there's a God and telling all of these stories. How can you know that it's not made up?
Read the Book in full and then make up your mind....

I can tell you more about what I think.
I'm actually looking for answers. I don't understand.

For example, I don't get why there's so much pain in the world. Why doesn't God to something about it?

In school, we learn about a God who loves everyone, no matter what. And if you're truly sorry for something you did, he will forgive you.
But the God from the bible seems so different to me.
The God of the Bible loves and wants to save all people.. BUT.. The God of the Bible is also perfect and because of that He cannot turn a blind eye to anything evil.. So He MUST judge anyone who has done anything wrong.. No one who has done a bad thing can be allowed into a perfect eternal existence unjustly / corruptly ... Therefore all men and woman are doomed to be declared guilty of sinning because all men and woman sin.. No matter how minor or major we thing our sin or other peoples sin is to God any sin makes one less them perfect.. God can only allow perfect people into his eternal perfect existence..

Now people would think that this makes like hopeless because no one can be perfect and thus no one can be saved justly by God.. But God in His awesome perfect wisdom has made a Way that He can redeem sinners and justly justify them and transform them into perfect eternal beings made worthy to enter into His eternal perfect existence..

This is by being forgiven and having their sins all justly forgiven.. It is justice to have mercy on those who have remorse for their sins.. And this is what God has done through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.. He has made a way for us to be saved..

The ""God of the Bible"" is the God of the entire Bible as a whole.. This includes a God of great anger against evil.. It is good to hate evil.. He is a God who is capable of demonstrating His opposition to evil through bringing great wrath / destruction upon evil doers on earth.. Thus He show people the serious price of their sins which is death.... But He also as i have revealed above shows that he is very quick to forgive those who have remorse for their evil deeds when they acknowledge their deeds as being wrong and evil and acknowledge Gods will as being true and good..

The Bible goes through all the facets of Gods character and to have any understanding of God we must read about all the facets the Bible reveals about Him..

I think that after you die, that's it.
Isn't the fact that life is short the reason it's so beautiful?
The thought of living forever would scare me.
If you where transformed into a perfect eternal being able to live in Eternity without any problem then it would not scare you at all.. It would be as normal as a fish in water.. You may find it scary now but you are a limited and faulty human being so relying on your current feelings about living forever is not a trustworthy basis for your point of view..

Life in this world in these bodies we exist in now can be beautiful at times and it can be terrible at times.. You can mix into that life all the variations of emotions and experiences between those two extremes.. Human life varies quite a bit.. And again you chose to believe when your life ends then that's it... This is not based on any real evidence at all.. But simply a belief that helps you avoid thinking of difficult things to do with the possibility of becoming an eternal being..

"then what do we tell the thief that is made happy by the fast money he gets from selling your stuff? Even deeper, what do we tell the wife of the husband who is made happy by having sex with many women?"
As long as nobody is hurt, everyone should be free to do whatever makes them happy. I personally don't think that it's good to have sex with lots of people and I don't think that this is what can make someone truly happy.
These people aren't happy. They are lost, I think.
You tell them the truth if you have any love for them, the truth can be very confronting and sometimes the truth hurts for a while, But in the long run or as we believe the eternal run,, That truth if accepted will be a wonderful blessing to the one who accepts it..

I don't really know..?
I mean, how can a person do all of these things? Like rising from the dead.
It is very easy if a God exists... The problem at the foundation of people who cannot believe that a dead person could be raised from the dead is they do not believe a God exists.. so to them the dead being raised from the dead is unimaginable.. But once a person is open to the possibility that a God exists then these things become a real possibility and it is easier for them to read and consider these things without such an adverse reaction..

Why did Jesus die for my sins?
I wasn't even there yet.

What makes you think that He died for your sins? He died for the sins of His people, are you one of His people?

Matthew 1:21 “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Are you a believer? Because the Scriptures say that Christ died for His people.

II Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Galatians 1:3-5 “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

I Timothy 1:15-16 “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.”

Titus 2:14 “who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”

I Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,”

Romans 5:10 “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”

II Corinthians 5:18-19 “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”

Ephesians 2:15-16 “by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.”

Colossians 1:21-22 “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,”

The Scriptures say that Jesus and the Father are reconciling His people to Himself, notice that the apostle associates himself with the people of God, not the world of sinners. He gave Himself in death for His people or as the apostle writes it "us", "we" "our" he never says they, those, or them which would mean people that were not His people that Jesus came to save from thier sins as the angel told Mary in Matthew 1:21.

Yawn,1 am here, hello Carla first off...
Welcome here you can discuss with bible smart people and possibly make new friends, hope you like it here!
Second Apologies for some of the "banter" you received and "long posts" you probably had to read through(talk about a headache to read or even scroll through) just woke up and noticed you have "reasonable" questions where as a new member has absolute rubbish to ask about so glad you are asking "appropriate questions" in bible discussion forums.
Anyways that's quite a "good start choosing to "read" the whole bible as a goal though personally from your post it seems like you are reading a "modernized version" of the bible I would suggest a king james version bible instead in my opinion because it makes more sense to me so it might help you.
Also I definitely understand why you have so many questions that's where my life started before coming wholly to believe not only in but upon God and Jesus and your first question "makes sense" yes there are questionable things in the bible as far as our mentality is concerned,it's easy to read on through the bible like a newspaper and think "wait what"?
This is because mentally we wanna "figure out things by ourselves and own knowledge" I often speculated many years just who or what God was, an element an unseen spirit and so on,but reading God's word I found "wasn't enough" to have me wholly believe because just as you are now reading the bible I started reading and tried believing the words because of being brought into church often but noticed I pretty much shrugged it all of as "a chore".
It wasn't until I realized that I was hurtful to others without meaning to(thought I could handle doing right on my own)that I really wanted to believe in God and Jesus and be saved.
So see that's how you really "learn" about the bible you not only "want" to learn for education but also all in all for a "good cause".
Also don't just think on God's word the bible "observe" people in your life who believe devoutly and you just might wonder as I did "why are they so happy"?
God bless you for wanting to read the bible and asking questions, for unlike some I believe that's where we all "start out" in growing faith and wisdom.

Carla, do you know that the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh? That through Him all things were made, and in Him is the life of men? As Creator of the universe, He has absolute mastery over that which He created, over the elements, being able to calm storms with a word, turn water into wine, walk on the sea, feed thousands with a few fishes and loaves of bread, give sight to the blind, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, cause the lame to walk, drive demons from the possessed, raise the dead from the grave, and even raise Himself from death, for it could not hold Him. He holds the keys to life and death. In Him we live and move and have our being.

The Bible is God's revelation to man of God's purpose and plan for humanity, culminating in the birth, life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Who had been foretold from ages past, right from the third chapter of Genesis. Jesus fulfilled hundreds of prophecies concerning His conception, birth, life, and ministry, during His time on earth. Nothing is too difficult for God to accomplish. As maker of the heavens and the earth, He desires you to know Him.

Hi Carla,

Maybe I can make a suggestion for you. I'm kind of on the opposite side of this from you, since I grew up atheist and very recently found faith. I will admit that the process of me accepting Jesus as my savior took several years, but its was a lot of doubt and uncertainty. One of the things that I really struggled with was how can I accept this book that makes no logical sense? I had been taught that empirical evidence and logic are the only ways to know real truth in this world, so being able to find some logic fro believing in God was very important to me.

This brings me to my suggestion. There is a book called "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis thats I found incredibly helpful. The book is a collection of radio broadcasts made in England during World War II, and basically it is C.S. Lewis speaking very plainly and logically about why Christianity makes logical sense. It is a short book but it was a game changer for me, because it satisfied the logical side of my brain enough to put aside my doubts and begin to read the Bible and really discover something profound and life changing.

Another suggestion I would make to you is if you want to read the Bible and ask questions that is great, but i would caution you to mind your intentions when reading. There is a HUGE difference in what you will take away from it reading it with skepticism and contempt versus and honest open minded curiosity and a desire to learn. If you colour your understanding with preconceived notions, it will be VERY difficult to draw any real conclusions from your research. Just like a Scientist, you must be unbiased.

So with that I will say good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for! I am by no means an expert but feel free to message me if you want to discuss more!

Every one has questions that is healthy. I had many when I first started studying. Many of those questions I have found answers in the bible over time as I became more familiar with it. I still have questions New ones at that, But I know if I keep learning I will one day find the answers to those also.

In many ways I looked for God because it was evolution that did not make sense to me. So many holes and problems. The more I studied evolution and the sciences the more I was convinced that there must be some intelligent being or something behind this earth.

Remember that the bible is written with different time and culture. And it has a context that is very different form the atheist worldview. Its good to keep those things in mind as you read. The reality is that it will remain a mystery to anyone who tries to apply modern views to it and different cultural perspectives to it.

There is a saying, Never judge a man until you have walked in his shoes. Well the same goes for the bible. You can't really grasp it or know it until you take the time to understand the time and culture. Some of that will come by reading the bible as a whole. Some will come from history study and getting to know how that culture thought.

One thing that really helped me was understanding that they had a Oral culture not a written. So while we have their writings in the bible, Its the stories that teach the lessons.

Lots of parables and poetry, real stories that illustrate real truths. It takes time to really get to know how to read it in its own setting.

You may not be interested enough for that. that is fine, I don't mind that you are an atheist. In many respects I would probably agree with you, with the major difference being that I do very much believe in the God of the bible. I am convinced beyond doubt.

Welcome to CC Carla., so glad you came. Lot's of different people here.,different personalities., Lot's of people who are willing to help you see Jesus. Today when we want to see God the Bible says to look at Jesus Christ His Son. I hope you will begin to read the Gospel of John because that will begin to tell you about Jesus. All the answers we need are found in Jesus Christ.

John 1:18
[SUP]18 [/SUP]No man has ever seen God at any time; the only [SUP][a][/SUP]unique Son, or [SUP][b][/SUP]the only begotten God, Who is in the bosom [in the intimate presence] of the Father, He has declared Him [He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known].

Just keep looking for Jesus. The Bible says in John 6:44 that God draws us in
[SUP]44 [/SUP]No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me, and [then] I will raise him up at the last day.

As we are being drawn in., we start to see we need help because we don't have answers and we don't know how to find them. But be encouraged because when God begins to pull at our hearts we begin to see He loved us so much He sent His Son Jesus to pay for the sins of the whole world. All the problems you mentioned about the world are real and have come because of sin. God has given the answer in His Son. Jesus came to take away the sin of the world.

[SUP]16 [/SUP]For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([SUP][a][/SUP]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
[SUP]
17 [/SUP]For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him.
[SUP]
18 [/SUP]He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation—he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ’s name.]

Those who hear the message answer the call and receive Jesus as their personal Savior. That's what we are all praying about for you Carla. The other answers will come as you go along learning more about Jesus. Let us know how things are going. Joanie

That is a great question, how can we know?

For me it was simple but took time. A bit like the scientific approach but bible based.

We have two options, The bible is From God or it is not.

So I approached it as if it was real and the God of the bible is real, If its real then I can learn about God from it. If its real then there must be something in it that I can test.

The first thing for me was prophecy. God claims in the bible to know the future. So I studied the prophecies. There are many different views on prophecy out there. So I just ignored them all and studied myself, It took some time but there are clues in Daniel that if you pick up on them you will know how to interpret them. Then I noticed that history lined up perfectly to what God predicted before it happened. Ps I also had to find out when it was written to be sure it was written before they happened.

After that I was convinced that this book was not normal. Thus I began to approach it with a new openness. So I read it from the beginning to end. I did not get much of what I read. But I held onto what I did Get and put it in the question box the things I did not Get or seemed hard or contradictory.

As time went by not only did I come to understand it better I found God and now I have an experience with God in my life.

That is the short version. But the point is simple test what you can. See what you find.
