Why can't it be just about experiencing the love of God? Why not just about knowing the Holy Spirit, living by the wisdom in the Bible?

Instead, new believers have to feel guilty about their Sin. Let's be honest, most people are not sinners but losers. They struggle in their jobs, their finances, their health etc.

They struggle to pay the bills, to find someone who actually cares about them.

They feel normal human emotions like anger, frustrations, hate, even lust.

Why is that evil?

Now such a person would love to experience the love of Jesus & the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

But to reach there, they first have to confess their sins, feel bad about themselves.

It is almost as if sin is the key concept in the Bible.

My parents know me with all my shortcomings. They still love me, and never ask me to confess my so called "sins" everyday for them to love me. Why is it different with God the Father then?

If Christianity was more about spreading the love and forgiveness of Jesus, and less about the condemnation of Sin - we would have lot more believers. Who doesn't want God as a personal friend?

And just for the sake of argument, here is what other religions say on the topic of sin:

Hinduism: The concept of Sin doesn't even exists. They have more of a guidelines about living an ethical life.
Islam: The concept of Sin exists, and good deeds must be performed regularly to outweight the quota of sin in a person's life.
Buddhism: The concept of Sin doesn't exists. "Paapa" or "Punya" are towards another person, whereas Biblical Sin is against God.
For people to know that God is loving and forgiving they have to know what God is forgiving them off.... What is the point of telling a person that God is forgiving if the person has no concept of sin????? Or more importantly knowledge of their sins..

It is a lie straight out of the pit that reduces what God considers sin to where a person can feel like they are not sinning even as they do. As Billy G said, "Even if our actions are pure, our thoughts often are not. And even if our actions and thoughts are pure, we still sin because of the good things we should be doing but fail to do."

Or as Jesus said, "You must be perfect, as perfect as the Father in Heaven"......anything less is to miss the mark, and is sin.

Saved sinners and lost sinners...a very bad way to speak or think in my opinion. How can we say, we will probably sin in some way on most days(which is true) without making it appear that we should accept a life of sinning? We should never accept a life of sinning because that encourages sin, on the other hand, to pretend that we do not sin will also encourage sin, in that case we just don't call it sin. Here is something that maybe we are overlooking. This may sound strange but think about it. When we are saved we, meaning our person, is NOT given the ability to live a sinless life. If God actually gave us at salvation the ability to live a sinless life then all Christians would be sinless, we would be exact copies of Jesus Christ. Paul made it plain, that because of our flesh nature we do not have the ability to live a sinless life. We are told that if we walk(act of our will) after the Spirit THEN we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Folks, the lust of the flesh is with us till we die, we cannot of our own ability overcome it, however when we follow the Spirit then we do not give in to those lusts. So while following the Spirit we are sinless, and when we are not completely following the Spirit we can and do sin. So if there is anyone out there who is following the Spirit 100% of the time, then yes you are sinless, the rest of us sin at times.

In reality we are called to be focused on love.

And this is because love has transformed our lives through the cross, repenting
and having our sins forgiven.

But maybe for some this has a lot of catches.
I have been surprised at how few seem to understand the centrality of Christ
and love.

It isnt that God is bashing or condemning. Yes, God and the bible focus a lot on it. Theres a reason for that.

According to Jesus, sin condemns us through the law. Sin causes heartache and destruction and ruin. It brings death. This is why the focus.

You spoke of your parents, how they love you regardIess. Yes, and Im willing to wager on where their focus would be If yu were messin with a killer everyday.

God loves us very much and and wants for our goodness in life. Hence, He constantly warns us of that which will destroy our lives.

I don't think most people are aware they are sinning. We go throught our daily lives without regard for others or not being aware of others peoples plights. We only think of ourselves and how good and pleasing to God we are. It's not any different today from 2000 years ago. Christ saves us!

OP: Why is Christianity so focused on Sin?

Maybe because to become a Christian the focus is on sin. We are sinners. We need to repent. And once we're saved, although we've died to our old selves and our life is now hidden in Christ, we still battle with sin and will until the day we receive our new perfect bodies and the Lord removes the old carnal nature for good.

Unfortunately that old carnal nature is still plaguing us. It's why we're told to PUT OFF the old man and PUT On the new man and why we're told to CLOTHE OURSELVES WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. And why we're told to BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. We have to do this every single day. We're told to confess our sins to one to another IN BROTHERLY LOVE. See - they're both right LOVE and SIN. When we see sin we know the way to deal with it is with the love of Christ.

Because of love - His love, we confess our sins. Thank God we get to confess our sins to Him. Otherwise we'd go around with all this crud and wouldn't be fruitful for the Kingdom of God at all.

We wouldn't be a witness of holiness because unconfessed sin taints us and will cause us to go deeper into sin. The Holy Spirit leads us into truth .........and the truth is He also reminds us when we sin or are about to sin. The less we listen to Him, we've got a boatload of unconfessed sins hanging about us.

Wonder why sin is spoken of a lot? 1186 times sin is mentioned in the NASB. There are others words as well that I haven't looked up that would apply, like transgressions, evil, wickedness, disobedience, immortality, offense etc. Those words aren't included in the 1186 times that sin is mentioned.

Guess how many times love is mentioned. Now as with sin, there will be other words mentioned that could also be included, but aren't. There's 484 times love is mentioned.

I show this only to show that sin is a BIG DEAL. Comparing your parents love with God's love is a contrast and not a comparison. Even is we're Christians, God's love goes much deeper and much fuller than ours ever will.

This comment
[If Christianity was more about spreading the love and forgiveness of Jesus, and less about the condemnation of Sin - we would have lot more believers. Who doesn't want God as a personal friend?] causes me to wonder if you know the true Jesus of the bible. Jesus Himself said the way is narrow and few there will be that will find the narrow path. Few will find the love of Jesus, not a lot more than the few. Why? Because man's way is evil (SIN) and they don't want to leave their life of sin.

Knowing the love of Jesus and experiencing the Holy Spirit includes dealing with SIN and deals with LOVE. It has to. LOVE does no wrong to God or his neighbor. But we do wrong to our neighbor and we do wrong to our God. We don't always love and that's what's at issue. It's not a heavy thing or a heavy weight we carry around. My focus is on God and His love.

My focus isn't on my sin, but it's always at the forefront because although I'm a new creation in Christ, the carnal me isn't always LOVING God and LOVING my neighbor. And when I SIN, I need to ask whomever I SINNED against for forgiveness. That act of forgiveness is LOVE. It's an act of LOVE. My sin is erased from the chalkboard and my list is empty.

I can't speak for others, but I don't walk around feeling bad. I walk around feeling loved and forgiven and free. I feel bad if I hurt someone and I feel bad when I sin. But it's taken care of right away. As soon as it's confessed, I'm cleansed.

I have such a beautiful and wonderful relationship with God. I could not feel more loved. The knowledge that He like a real father will pick me up when I fall and cleanse me of all the dirt and dust of the day is marvelous.....it's one of those TOO WONDERFUL thoughts that take me captive and in awe of the God of the universe.

The one and only true God loves me that much. He's done it all and He shows me each day how to walk the way He wants me to walk and shows me how to please Him in all that I do. He has and does it all for me. He even gives me a new want. I want to walk as He walks and I want to obey Him in all I do. I want to. And I don't want to sin. And yet, He cleans me up when I do.

They say confession is good for the
soul. How true that really is. And when I confess I do feel bad that I've sinned against God or if its a person I feel bad that I sinned against them. We should because those things are opposed to the love of God.

Excellent post! It wouldn't let me rep you, so I thought another time round was warranted. You have such insight into the truths in the Bible, and what the gospel is about!

Lot of good responses in this thread. And I think you will agree with this very basic and simple explanation.

Christianity focuses on the Son. Religion focuses on sin.

And as believers, we ALL have some religion in us that needs to be unlearned.

Some good points here. You are correct, to much time is spent focusing on sin in the Christian life. Once we are born again, the focus should be on, what has happened to you, and beginning an intimate relationship with the Father through Christ. You now are a whole new creature in Christ and mind renewing must begin!

Sin is a factor, but not the key factor. Two important things to know about sin, 1. It will kill you. The wages of sin brings death Romans 6: 23. When we sin, it brings some sort of death into our lives if we stay in that sin. 2. Sin brings condemnation and 1 john 3:21-22 reveals that if our heart condemns us we have no confidence before God.

I john 1: 9 states when we sin, if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness. He is not saying you are no longer righteous or you would have to be born again and again, and again. He is saying when you confess your sin, it cleanses you from the unrighteous feelings you get due to sin so you can approach God with confidence. Hebrews 4: 16 was a heresy to the newly converted jews who went from Law unto Grace because they were told they could come boldly to the throne of Grace. That was unheard of under the Old Covenant because ONLY the high priest could come into Gods presence once a year due to sin. That approach could only come after he had gone through temple rituals and blood sacrifice. But thank God for Hebrews 7:11-14. Along comes Jesus from the Tribe of Judah not Aaron and once you have a change of priest hood there is a change of Covenant. Under the new covenant you can come boldly before the throne of Grace and receive Grace and Mercy even if you have sinned.

So if you have or are sinning, run to God, get that condemnation off of you and allow his Grace and Mercy to change you and keep moving forward!!! We are called to be dead to sin and alive unto righteousness!

2 Corinthians 5: 17-21 clearly states God is not holding or imputing sin against us, however, sinning produces a void in our lives making us think God has turned his back on us.

The more we focus on who we are in Christ, yielding to the Holy Spirits promptings, developing personal time with God, the effects of sin get very distance.

Our whole purpose in life is to get to know and develop a relationship with God. We are to reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive unto righteousness.

Why sin is so important in the bible? Because and thats what god says: Sin destroyes relationship with the father! Jesus said in John 15,14:
"You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you."
To make sin small, means closing your eyes. If you consider what i shas cost Jesus to pay for it. And we want now have an easy life doing want we want, but to have the heaven!
We are strangers in this world, as Jesus says. We cant expect an peaceful, happy and healthy life on earth! What we can expect is persecution and hate from the world. ( i know we dont like it) Peter and the Apostles rejoced when they was beaten up because of their witness to the jewish leaders. (Acts 5, 41)

But sometimes it seems to me, that christians makeing rules which God not made. And this makes it often difficult.

And what is wrong to know that we are sinners and depent on Gods grace and forgiveness? I can live with this knowledge and be happy to belong to the Lord Jesus Christ.
And when I think back to the time when I found to Jesus! It was my sin which leds me to an holy mercyful God!

There is only one true religion: The doctrine of Jesus Christ, so I don't make comparisons with other "religions". I don't think the New Testament focuses too much on sin, but I agree that some denominations do that. That's why we must learn from Him (by reading the Bible and confirmation from the Holy Spirit) and not only from preachers and Bible teachers.

Um, that's not being honest, it's actually being dishonest.

No, nothing but pure sentimentalism and error. "For all have sinned..." Thank God Christ came to save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21.

It says in the Old testament that God would send the Messiah to come and die for us when you read Isaiah 53 and other scriptures. Why don't we now pray to God to send the Messiah to us and die for us like He said He would?

When we figure out that reason - then we will have the answer to some questions that we have concerning sins and forgiveness in the New Covenant which is all based on the blood of Jesus.

The religion of Christianity is in the sin management business. God is in His Son's shed blood and dying on the cross and in His resurrection business. God is Christ conscious - not sin conscious.

Religion always gets the gospel of the grace of God in Christ backwards and tries to accomplish by "it's own efforts" what Christ has already done in His finished work. Believing in Christ's completed work is the obedience of faith.
that's ridiculous.
of course God is sin conscious.

God dealt with sin, but you're right Christians all over are obsessed with other peoples sin nature.

There is no need for us to be upset by sin since none of us can remedy it but God. We all have to accept we're in the same boat, period.

Perhaps if it is spoken this way it would be better for you. God is not sin-focused - He is His Son-focused and what His Son did focused....:)

We all need to live our lives the way God wants.

Our sins can have big repercussions. If you defraud someone, the knock on effect can be extensive. e.g. they defraud someone else, and so on and so on. A small act of venality can have massive knock on effects actually, and destroy another person's life.

Sins easily become generational also. When you see your father doing something unwholesome, you are very likely to adopt his behaviour.

The problem with sin is that it is a degenerative condition, and as it spreads through society or generations, it tends just to get worse and worse.

Sin is just a catch all term....stealing, lying, cheating, being violent and so on[/FONT]
