Okay so I was unaware that the Church of Christ was a cult until just recently. I have attended their bible studies for several weeks now, and have felt convicted very much. How do I leave without being rude? Because several of my friends are members, and I don't want to hurt their feelings. I feel so bad to leave, but at the same time, their teachings are wrong interpretations of the Bible. I'm angry that I was tricked into this.
Going back to your parents' church is a good idea. For future references, you may want to google your next church's beliefs & ideology before attending.

She was really respectful of my decision. She said that I'm missing out on becoming more of a disciple, and she said that I am always welcome to come back and do the bible studies. When she asked why I would be discontinuing, I didn't say "Because what your teaching is wrong", but I did it by saying that I needed to focus on my family. My mother told me if she asked, then I would use her as a scapegoat. I totally did that. I told my mentor that I needed to focus more on my family, and it needs to be more of a priority that I attend the church with my family. She totally understood. I am so grateful that she didn't yell at me as much as I thought. She did warn me, however, that I will be missing out. She didn't damn me or anything, so that's a plus.

Praise the Lord you did it! And it was not an untruth! Actually attend your parents church, maybe youth group, and find out what the doctrinal statement is. You may not understand some of it, but as you read your Bible, you can compare it to what you are reading.

I don't think there is any such thing as a perfect church, but I am very much against any church that claims it is the only way to find Jesus.

I am so grateful that this woman let you go, and you can start learning and growing in Christ. Keep close to God, and he will make you a strong woman of God! You have demonstrated your commitment to Jesus, and you have been challenged about your beliefs and you made an informed decision.

Keep on praying and following Jesus!!

Satan kills people with kindness. He makes them think they owe it to themselves to sin. He attracts them into cults with benevolence and purpose. He attacks their faith by showing them spiteful Christians and kind-hearted unbelievers. Essentially he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Satan is like the little kid I knew in Hawaii as a child. This kid would bite me and run away into the loving arms of three of his older siblings. All these people saw was some outsider chasing down their brother with senseless anger. So it's important we don't let emotion govern our decisions on what to believe but rather the truth. And I feel that you are doing that, so I'm glad. Some people can be very kind while still being very wrong in their theology.

Praise the Lord that you followed through with your decision. Make sure that you stay faithful and strong in your study of the precious Word of the Lord. The Lord will cause and turn you into a strong and vocal Woman of the Lord. The path can be hard but it is so precious and is so important. Seek that daily through your study of the Word and through prayer. There are times when just talking to the Lord will comfort and give you a peace that is so surreal and without measure. Always seek him and seek his will for your life. Begin to intercede for others in your prayers. That gift is so awesome. I have seen and experienced miracluoius this happen because of the gift of intercession through others as well as being led to intercede for other myself. Stay strong always in the Word of the Lord. I actually have two churches. One with my family, which is a well-known, non-denominational church that has a pretty good reputation. The other church is the Church of Christ. That one, I think, is a cult. I am considering leaving that church and continue to attend the one with my parents.
How is it a cult?

May I ask what is it that there interpreting wrong? The Church of Christ is a non denominational, autonomous church which we go by the bible. If you feel that strongly about leaving you should tell them how you feel in regards to them interpreting the bible incorrectly and see what they say. How did you come up with the Church of Christ being a cult?

When attending the church, I noticed that, first there was no musical instruments, which was a bit unusual. Bit I did like the people, because they were so nice. When I did the "bible talks" with a mentor and one of my friends, she said that in order to become a Christian, I had to go, baptize, and teach others of the Bible (it's referred to Mathew 28:16-20). But the way that they interpreted it, they talked to me as if I have to feel guilty and be convicted. My mentor said that the only way someone could be saved is by going out and baptizing others into the church. It was a literal interpretation of the Bible. But why was that the only way to be saved? What about salvation? What about God showing us mercy and His forgiveness? It was an experience where I felt always convicted and guilty rather than joyful for the Lord.

just leave their on a path of destruction. If you care about their feelings tell them the truth and lord willing you might help lead someone out of it also. but do it quickly.

I would kindly suggest you study scripture on your own, and not listen to your "mentor" as "truth".
Jesus said "no one can come to the father except through me" so that is the only way to receive salvation. One important point to realize is in order to really understand salvation is we need to realize we are a sinner so there is "guilt". God cannot forgive if one isn't repentant and confesses Jesus is their savior.
Anyway, study scripture on your own and try to understand salvation. Don't rely on others interpretation because from what you are saying about the mentor she seems a little misguided as well(and I am Church of Christ).

Thank you for your input. I understand that feeling guilty is a way of responding to the realizations that our sins are what keep us from God. It's inevitable to feel convicted, because as part of our sinful nature, God's plan for us is so fulfilling and pure in meaning. I would have to say that I did feel convicted, and I did let go of that guilt and repent of my sins. And I did confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. The only thing that bothered me when doing the "bible talks" is continuing that conviction and having emphasis on certain aspects of being a disciple, like baptism and not using musical instruments. According to my mentor, baptism and discipleship was the only way to being saved by Christ. But from what I've understood, baptism is a form of obedience to God, and can save you. She said that baptism through their church is the only way for salvation. Isn't that kind of judgmental to make a claim like that? To claim that her church is the one true church? That reminded me of how Pharisees and the self-righteous would think, because she is judging others based on their walks in faith, right? Our walks with Christ should be uplifting and joyful and encouraging, never judged. People are able to be saved in different ways, not just baptism. They can receive salvation through God's grace and love for us. John 3:16 says that.

Just leave...simply say you do not believe what they are saying! unless people stand, it is all silly. Know hat you believe and you will stand. If you were asked to jump off a cliff would you? maybe...maybe you would say no...

The CoC does believe that baptism is an important part of salvation, but for anyone to say that baptism in THEIR church is the only right one is presenting themselves as a denomination and that is unscriptual and yes it is very judgemental. Baptism is PART of ones salvation in order to be in Christ but baptism itself does not save. I mean seriously, I could dunk myself in water and call it a baptism, but in that sense it is nothing more than taking a bath if you don't believe and confess Jesus is your savior.

It is really sad that so many within the CoC don't understand what the bible says. The judging some do within the church isn't part of the doctrine. I understand this, but I am just one person within the church.

Any church that tells you that you have to do it THEIR WAY is not within scripture. You are to be obedient to God according to scripture. Not a denomination.
Just open your bible and study and understand the scriptures so you will not fall victim to any evil teachings. Educate yourself, and ask God for guidance.

You are in a cult..you say you think so...all sounds a bit odd. It is quite simple...get a Bible and read it!! not one produced by the 'cult'. Just buy an NIV..simple...read. Most important is to pray, pray for wisdom, knowledge....and that people will come around you and help you. He says this will happen. Whats with all the fear? the 'oh i do not know what to do..' Please. You are living a supernatural life? if you are not, you can be..God Bless you. <><
