That's not true. It's unwise to listen to music that promotes sinful behavior (usually fornication) because if you are listening to pop stars sing about sex and partying all day it's really not a big surprise if after a while you start to find yourself wanting to engage in those activities. We generally live out what we take in.

You might hear a Christian teenage girl singing, Katy Perry's Teenage Dream,
"Let's go all the way tonight
No regrets, just love
We can dance, until we die
You and I, will be young forever"
everyday, because it's "stuck in her head" because she listens to it a lot, and after repeating these lines everyday for weeks she finds herself faced with the moral dilemma of having sex with her boyfriend, and of course she hears in her head, "Let's go all the way tonight, no regrets, just love, you and I will be young forever". And then she does it, and she regrets it, and she says "I couldn't help it. It just felt so right at the time. I couldn't stop myself." We generally live out what we take in.

Here's the long and the short of it: garbage in, garbage out. If we put garbage in our minds, it will manifest in our actions. And it has nothing to do with weakness, it has to do with our sin nature.

Paul said: "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things." -Philippians 4:8

I certainly feel this extends to the music we listen to.

Music genres aren't the issue. It's the lyrics and the worldviews presented that are the problem (or conversely the blessing).

No, of course you aren't obligated to listen to any specific genres in particular. I wouldn't personally view most contemporary music as problematic, since most of it doesn't explicitly concern what might constitute a perspective or lifestyle antithetical to Christianity -- beyond a good portion of rap, heavy metal, or explicit pop, at least. Most of it is virtually nonsensical, at any rate. I prefer ambient electronica and soft techno, myself. Can't stand vocals in my music. ;)

If by 'gospel' you mean traditional gospel music, then no, that's ridiculous. There is nothing about that form of music that makes it Godly, other than the lyrics. You could just as easy replace the lyrics with bad lyrics, and it changes the effect on you.
But, as stated, garbage in, garbage out. What you listen to replays in your heard, good or bad, so just be wise in what you listen to. There are a lot of options out there for Christian music, or Christian friendly music. I find it's more of a case of staying away from what can have a negative impact on your mind and spirit.

Hello countrychick; as Christians we should listen to God- honouring music. Such as spiritual songs, psalms, and hymns.

Now does a Christian have to listen to spiritual music? No, because Christians still have free will.

But also understand that God's Holy word exhorts us strongly to listen to spiritual music and songs:

Ephesians 5:18-21 KJV
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; [19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; [20] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; [21] Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Colossians 3:15-17 KJV
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. [16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. [17] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

As a born again child of God; you should want to listen to music that honours your Heavenly Father and that gives Glory to His Name.

Plus, it is very good for your spirit.

On the contrary; carnal and worldy music (rap, rock, dancehall, meatal, country, pop, etc.) will not benefit your spirit, but will do damage to your spiritual walk and life.

Remember what Paul said concerning all things:

1 Corinthians 6:12 KJV
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 10:23 KJV
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, [/B]but all things edify not.

All things are lawful for you; but all things are not expedient and all things certainly do not edify.

Even though we have Christian liberty; we still must use discernment. Keeping those two Scriptures in mind will be a help to you.

Moderation is also important for the born again Christian to practice in his life.

Another rule that is good to follow is whether or not what you are doing or listening to brongs glory to God Almighty.

1 Corinthians 10:30-32 KJV
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? [31] Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. [32] Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

One more thing; watch out for the youth movements. They are not Scriptural.

These modern day movements that are centered on the youth use the methods of the world (rock music/hip hop) to bring the youth in.

Rock n' roll and Hip Hop music cannot bring true glory to God.

Something that is of the world cannot be Christianized.

something like the human voice or music played on instruments?

Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings,
with loud shouts.

(Psalm 33:3)

If you think you praise God with + it's clear that God is Holy, than it's ok. In my opinion.

nice subject to raise.

I think it's ok to listen to the music you want to for as long as it doesn't make you sin,
if listening to a particular type of music causes you to sin (even in your mind) then cut it out.

otherwise listen with a joyful heart, and appreciate the gifts God has given to these singers. :)

hope this helps!
