One, check your link, as it doesn't work. Going to Trump's website, I managed to find it here -- quite easily, actually, since he's only got one position linked under his "Positions" tab. Where is tax reform, foreign policy, welfare reform, the military? Oh, right -- he doesn't mention them except in quickly passing over them, because that would require actually knowing what he's talking about. His appearance on Hugh Hewitt's radio program proved that he's clueless. All this together lends support to my contention that he is a one-issue candidate with nine-second soundbites for answers.
Now let's look at what he said in his "immigration reform 'policy statement' ":
He starts out with what he calls three "principles":
- A nation without borders is not a nation.
- A nation without laws is not a nation.
- A nation that does not serve its own citizens is not a nation.
Wonderful one-liners. Principles? Pffft. Principles define a belief system or concept. While I agree with every single one of those statements, I can't name anyone who wouldn't. In the context of a position paper, they are meaningless.
He finally makes a solid plan-of-action statement in saying "Make Mexico pay for the wall." He's been saying that since his announcement speech. He includes several links to government reports and media releases detailing how Mexico aids and abets illegal immigration, the impact of illegal immigration on jobs, and the well-known aspect of illegal immigration impacting crime, because many of the illegals are criminals. Again, nothing new here -- and also no answers.
Finally, he gets to an actual plan: Pay for the wall by increasing fees and tariffs on various visa and visiting-worker permits. Great. A plan!
A plan that is a total failure. Best estimates for the cost of a wall come out to $6.4 billion. That's just the construction cost. We would spend another $2 billion a year to maintain and secure such a wall. Ad infinitum for all practical purposes. Not accounting for inflation.
Doubling those visa and permit fees immediately would indeed raise $6.4 billion -- in 18 years. In other words, it's a total failure, like I said. That doesn't even take into account his foot-in-mouth statement that he's going to "deport all the illegals." Whether there are only 11 million of them, as the government avers, or 30 million, as alarmists claim -- the truth lying somewhere in the middle, no doubt -- it will cost trillions and take a lifetime to accomplish, clogging dockets to the point that nothing else happens at the federal court level forevermore.
The rest of his "plan" is a rehash of things the other GOP candidates from Ben Carson and Jeb Bush to Rand Paul (yes, Rand Paul) have been saying for at least a year before the clown-candidate got into the race. More ICE officers. Hell, even Obama said we should do that. Mandatory deportation for all felon illegals -- duh. Defund sanctuary cities. There's already legislation in the House to do that.
He's got two original ideas: Cooperate with local police department gang interdiction units. The number of llegals that will identify is probably better than we get now, but it will still be a drop in the bucket. The other is essentially the repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment. That's the only way we're going to end so-called birthright citizenship, which has been a founding tenet of U.S. civil and immigration law since 1790. It won't happen, nor should it.
Now, go to Ben Carson's "Issues" page. Look how many issues he has established non-nonsense, well-thought-out positions on. Click on any of them. You'll see a comprehensive outline of what he will actually do if elected. No extraneous links to irrelevant crap. Just statements: "This is what I will do."
Trump has nothing, is nothing, knows nothing.
Any other questions?
You assert many of your own innuendos to discredit every and anything that comes from Donald Trump's mouth. Have you ever heard, 'reiteration for amplification' or the term 'incompetence'? There are many laws on the books that need to be implemented, that is for sure, but that is not happening because of 'INCOMPETENCE'. Get the picture? Have you had much confrontation with illegals from Mexico? I have, and many of them need to go back. Many are up to no good and are very arrogant, that's right, 'ARROGANT'. We do not need them on our streets, taking our jobs or living off the government dole. Those who are civilized and want to make a good life for themselves and be productive, then let them come in the right way. If Trump echos what others have said, then he is like-minded and not contrary and there is nothing suspicious about that. You don't have to be original in everything in terms of your plan for the many aspects that make us who we are as a country and nation. There are many landmarks in out past that we could bring back that would profit us in so many ways, take your pick. We have lost so much in terms of productivity right here in our back yard that could be restored with the right leader taking the initiative to do it, but we have been very incompetent to do so.
We have allowed so many countries to have their way with us who have taken advantage of our generosity and Trump says it's enough and I agree. For America to be great again we must have good people doing great work is all areas. The status quo is not working and we have a Republican congress. The Senate has the power to do things that could stop many of the initiatives that Obama has done, but they fail to execute that separation of power. They have been very incompetent and complacent and are very passive in their passion for this country and its people. I believe that Trump understands that as well as anyone else on that stage and approaches it from his own point of view with the skills that he has. You seem to discredit the man because you have no affection or respect for him. I believe you are wrong about him and also in your heart.
