1. What one food describes your life as a single person and why?

Actually a tootsie roll pop. It was hard for a long time but with patience I finally have gotten to the good part. Like a tootsie roll pop, my singleness too seems to have many flavors; loneliness, productivity, and service.

2. If you were to make dishes for 2 CC friends, who would it be, what would you call the the dishes, and what would they be made of?

Jonathan1977 - chocolate pie in a Jar-Jar.... oreo crust in bottom of pint mason jar topped with chocolate mousse, whipped cream, and shaved chocolate

Pipp - cinnamon crown torte...12 layers of large cinnamon cookies with a cocoa whipped cream between each layer, softening the cookies into a cake like texture and topped with dark chocolate.

3. What is a food or food combo you loved as a kid but find repulsive as an adult?

I liked eggs as a kid, but I will nearly upchuck if I try to eat them now.

4. What is the best restaurant you have ever been to and why?

Piestro's in Branson, MO. They had great food, especially this thin crust potato pizza with pancetta. They also had this fantastic chocolate dessert fondue. The atmosphere was also wonderful.

5. What is the most obscure/unique food item that you have ever eaten?

probably calamari

1. Visual Arts and Ancient History.

2. Mum and dad. They weren't perfect but they taught me to love God, to grow in my faith and to have integrity, amongst many other things. Author-wise: C.S. Lewis. Due to his godly writings that are full of both wisdom and creative imaginings. He's also responsible for turning me into a bookworm.

3. The basics of cross-stitch in Textiles class at high school.

4. The Importance of Biblical Creation, with a minor in Learning to Be Your Awkwardorable Self.

5. Drawing classes with Herge (creator of Tintin) or Hayao Miyazaki (of Studio Ghibli). Also writing and theology classes with C.S. Lewis.

1. I would have said a good curry, but for some reason, I've lately been drawn to tacos. ;)

2. I would make a seriously awesome banana smoothie for Rachel, with extra milk. I'd make an Aussie burger for Ugly (large burger with an Aussie meat patty, garlic and caramelized onion, cheese, tomato, pickles, lettuce, beetroot, bacon, egg, salt and pepper and tomato sauce).

3. I can't think of any. As I grew, my taste buds matured eg. I used to hate onion and garlic. Now you can't see me without them.

4. I haven't been to any fancy restaurants but I love a good self-serve restaurant with lots of variety - healthy and not so healthy foods. Charlie's Dinner or Sizzler comes to mind.

5. Sea anemone sushimi in Tokyo. It was awful! I felt so nauseous after eating it. I still eat sushi and sushimi but I don't order anything too adventurous.

1. What one food describes your life as a single person and why?

sloppy joe cornbread.jpg

I am this sloppy joe casserole with cornbread on top.

2. If you were to make dishes for 2 CC friends, who would it be, what would you call the the dishes, and what would they be made of (Ex. Jonathan1977, chocolate pie in a Jar-Jar, oreo crust in bottom of pint mason jar topped with chocolate mousse, whipped cream, and shaved chocolate)?

Well, when I have people over, I tend to involve them in the process, so they will probably be making some of it...even if it is preparing a salad or uncorking wine or setting the table or something.

I don't know if I have any two CC-ers that I want to meet over others, but right now, a nice late summer dish for eating out on the patio would be

squash ravioli with a fresh tomato and herb sauce with onions and pancetta
simple garden salad made with local fresh organic veggies, Dave's dressing
garlic breadsticks

but if wisebeardman is visiting, we would go out for chicken wings and beer.

3. What is a food or food combo you loved as a kid but find repulsive as an adult?

I like more things now than I did as a kid, so this is hard...probably sugary stuff. I used to love fluffer-nutters (peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwiches), but can only do a couple of bites now. waaaaay too sugary. I don't do real pops either. I will drink a diet Hanson's ginger ale, or have a GUS (Grown Up Soda - less sugar than regular drinks).

GrownUpSoda.jpg

I highly recommend their dry cranberry-lime

4. What is the best restaurant you have ever been to and why?

too many to count...I recently discovered this hippie restaurant in downtown Sacramento called "Mother's." I think it had the double meaning of being like mom's comfort food but also because since they use all fresh ingredients, could be interepreted as "Mother Earth." Anyway, very friendly staff, fresh ingredients, award winning chef, California casual dining out on their patio.

5. What is the most obscure/unique food item that you have ever eaten?

hmmm....this is relative, since what may be obscure for one may be totally normal for another. I tend to like regional peasant food. I've had sea turtle while in the Cayman Islands. Before I get yelled at, they had made great strides in bringing the local sea turtle population back, so they were okay to hunt again.

In the Dominican Republic, I had this wonderful chicken that was sold by the street vendors - kind of charred and lemony. I don't know what other herbs they used, but I have been trying to duplicate this for years without success. They served it with plantains that were wrapped in foil and just thrown in the coals. Caribbean starchy goodness!! oh...also had spiced goat on that trip when I ditched my travel companion because I was sick of translating.

1) How about the pumpkin pie my roomie made for our first thanksgiving here. It was a microwave recipe because we didn't have an oven, but we also didn't have a lot of the ingredients listed in the recipe, so she evaporated her own evaporated milk, mixed up her own bisquick, realized that although we didn't have US style pumpkin the squash here would work just as well. Something about improvising around all of the obstacles. This is how it turned out by the way:
IMG_0803.JPG

2) Let's see I suppose we could do a Pipperoni cake, which would look something like a cross between a cake and a pizza but mostly just be a very generous serving of bread dough with savory ingredients including pepperoni. And crunchy wandering gypsy tacos, a low carb tortilla rolled around crisp vegetables perfect for eating on the go.

3) For the most part things are going the other way around, there is stuff I didn't think I liked as a kid but now I'm trying some new things and finding out they aren't that bad. I did have a ramen noodle phase where I really liked them and now they aren't very appetizing to me though I will still eat them.

4) The carnivore in Nairobi Kenya. It's an all you can eat place that specializes in grilled African game meat (gazelle, ostrictch, zebra, crocodile, etc.). they bring around skewers of meat to the table and ask who wants some of this or that and that continues until you lower your flag as a sign of surrender because everyone at the table is full, then they bring you coffee and deserts.

5) Between eel, lion jerky, freshly grilled goat intestine, duck blood soup (that was an unintentional one), and bear pastrami I'm having kind of a tough time choosing. Maybe I should let you guys vote on which is weirder. Oh and dog and embryonic duck eggs could be in the near future. And I haven't even mentioned weird ice cream flavors like young green rice or taro.

1. when you were in school, what was your favorite subject to learn?
I really enjoy art and English. One time I got an opportunity to paint a mural in one of the senior hallways, but since I was so distractible and never finished my own projects and was goofing off the whole time,I had to get cut from the project lol.
2. aside from actual educators, what person in your life has taught you the most, and how did they help you?
Jesus. I feel bad for saying this but I don't feel like I can depend on anyone else right now.

3. Name something you once learned, but have since forgotten.
idunno

5. if given the opportunity to take classes or lesson(s) from anyone you wanted, who would be your teacher, and what would you choose to learn?
Kickboxing, maybe some martial arts, and pastry decorating. Maybe pottery too.

Gary: Deep dish pizza - layered olives, cheese, sauce, peppers, onion, pepperoni, Italian sausage in a deep crust

This one's a stumper because most of the fine people here come up with the most elaborate dishes! It's amazing. It's like a lot of you know the names of all these exotic sounding vegetables things and spices and accouterments (how did I know that word?....oh - it's those crusty bread things you put in salads. Of course), so I really think I should eat alone. Oh - on that heavenly recipe thread there was portabella mushrooms with cream cheese and pieces of bacon - I made that! I figured, with those ingredients, how I could i mess it up? It was very very good.

What is a food or food combo you loved as a kid but find repulsive as an adult? Buttermilk and cornbread mixed in it. I ate it like it was cake in a milkshake when I was little but now? just. no.

What is the best restaurant you have ever been to and why? I ate at this place down in Atlanta GA called The Red Snapper. It was a small restaurant but once inside it seemed like the little italian restaurant that Michael and Sollazzo and that police chief were in when Michael shot 'em up in Godfather. All the tables had white tablecloths and the plates and glass seemed very fine. The service was impeccable and the waiter wore a little towel over his crooked arm and had a wine opener around his neck on a chain. The plates weren't all loaded up with food but were tastefully set. They even made a red potato look regal and put little spritz of parsley on them. But of all was the coffee. After my helping of a garlic/wine trout dish came a very nice cup and saucer of black coffee with a small pitcher of cream and this tiny little spoon. The waiter also had a small dish of cubed sugar and he opened the top of it and looked at me with his head slightly tilted. He didn't even have to ask when I said "I don't take sugar" and he said "very well sir". They served a glass dish of sherbet which was like a cream sherbet and that with the coffee was an unbelievable experience.

What is the most obscure/unique food item that you have ever eaten? I ate possum once. Once being an operative word. It was fried possum and I thought it remarkable when the meat was placed in the dry frying pan it almost immediately formed a liquid slathering of grease far out pacing grease producers like bacon. It popped and sizzled until it was half it's original size and then placed on a paper towel which soaked up a brownish red grease stain all the way to its edges. Even when it reached my plate it had soaked all the other nearby foods. It was actually tender and I could have cut it was a fork but when I bit into it, the grease fat squirted out and escaped my lips and dripped out my mouth. When I looked at the other people eating, I noticed the same thing had happened to them.

Believe I'll head back to the Red Snapper.

New questions!!

1.) If you could describe yourself and/or your life using song lyrics, what would they be and why?

He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And oh, how He loves us, oh,
Oh, how He loves us,
How He loves us all

2.) What is the biggest skeleton secret in your closet?

Probably the dysfunction of several adult family members.

3.) What is your favorite food dish and how would you prepare it for company?

5. What is the most obscure/unique food item that you have ever eaten?

1) Probably tortellinis in a butternut squash marinara. Not everyone is willing to get past the odd color and seemingly weirder combination, but when you do it's sweet.

2) Hm.... I'd make cake for jb800, probably confetti cake from the box (cux that's all I can make), and brownies for whoever else of my friends that wanted them (because that is also all I can make)

3) Oddly enough it's the opposite. I was a super picky child and hated a lot of stuff that I like now as an adult.

4) So far, a breakfast place called Butterfields. The food was so excellent, and I love breakfast in general so I loved it.

5) So far, Basil Pesto Sausagues. Which I had at my house, and they were amazing. Got them from Trader Joes

1.) If you could describe yourself and/or your life using song lyrics, what would they be and why?

When I think of all my faults and all my failures
When I consider all the times I've let God down
I am humbled at the grace he has extended
I'm amazed at the mercy I have found.
I could never earn his love on my own
But every time I stand before his throne...

I stand redeemed
By the blood of the lamb
I stand redeemed before the great I am.
When he looks at me he sees the nail scarred hands
Blood bought my liberty
I stand redeemed.

Even at my best I am unworthy.
I had nothing precious I could give.
A broken life is all I have to offer
And yet it is priceless gift to him.
The bitter marks of sin will never fade away
But I can come before him unafraid...

I stand redeemed
By the blood of the lamb
I stand redeemed before the great I am
When he looks at me he sees the nail scarred hands
Blood bought my liberty
I stand redeemed.

Time for 5 new questions:

1. In your opinion, what is the best candy bar ever made?
Candy bars aren't all that wonderful to begin with but I've always been partial to a snickers.

2. If you could visit a historic site or monument, which would you most like to visit?
I've heard that Mount Rushmore and the badlands are an interesting landscape. I've been to so many places already I'm not sure what other historical places I'd like to see. Maybe Macchu Pichu, some of the book of acts sites in Turkey, or the ruins of ancient rome and greece.

3. What is the best joke you have ever heard (yes the rated G jokes)?
Well one of the funny ones from when I was a kid that translates decently is the one about the three boys who went camping. The older one told the younger two that they should get in the tents and go to sleep before the mosquitoes came out. The younger boys woke up around midnight and saw some fireflies flying around. One of them says to the other, "We'd better hide. They're looking for us with flashlights." (Yes it is funnier when you are 5 or 6 years old).

4. If you were given $1000 and were told you had to use it to help someone else, what would you do with it? Donate it somewhere. Maybe spread it around several friends who are involved in overseas work or put it towards a specific project like building a well, or providing necessary vitamins or some other such thing.

5. If you were magically able to solve one problem in your life with a snap of your fingers, what would it be?
In no particular order: lose weight, no more allergies, actually become fluent in the language here that I've been studying for the past 2 years.
