IMO, music is NOT ungodly.. It's the nature of the lyrics that make it good or bad to listen to. So many songs sing about sex or drugs or rape/murder..THOSE are the types of songs to not listen to. jmo

I'm a little concerned by your title for this thread: "any real Christian who despise ungodly music like rock, country, rap, CCM?" You are implying that we are not real Christians if we do listen to any of those things. From the onset you are confrontational. Your OP says that you are looking for people to talk to. It doesn't seem to be going very well.

But onward to your main point:

I'm curious - what is acceptable music to you? Hymns? Many of those melodies began as tavern songs. Then somebody made up Christian lyrics to the well-known tune. Are these unacceptable because the melodies have secular origins? Do you only listen to the hymns that did not start this way? Have you researched which ones are okay and which ones are not?

But really any music that you hear in Western civilization, whether sacred or secular, is going to have pagan origins. The early church didn't have tertian harmony to begin with - that was introduced as they encountered other cultures. Many of their musical styles were adopted and eventually formalized by the Florentine Camerata in the 1500's, because that's what big government does. But musicians, being the creative souls that they are, began breaking the rules, adding more complex harmonies, including the tritone, which was considered to be the "Devil's Interval." Most hymns today have a dominant seventh chord, which includes this interval.

So, I ask in all seriousness - - do you only listen to plainchant? If not, you would see that you would be breaking your own rules once you did a little research into music history.

Then you are at the wrong place. This is a public forum open to discussion.

yup..what she said.. :) I hope you don't expect everyone here to agree with you, because we all have our own opinions on this subject. If you can't handle contrary answers, then that's too bad because lots of people will disagree with you, no matter what the subject is. Music is great, God created music. Man created the lyrics, so if you wanna blame so-called "evil songs" for corrupting people, blame the person who wrote the lyrics, not the song itself. If the lyrics are of questionable nature, don't listen to the song..problem solved. :)

Horn, flute, and lyre are also a-ok. Zither and pipe are a bit on the edge, but still within the bounds of acceptability. 'All kinds of music' is right out..

This thread is really making me think. I've always been partial to things like the slide whistle and kazoo (which I was first introduce to at my Christian school, gasp!), but now I'm wondering if those instruments would be seen as too ungodly...

This thread is a great window on how rational christians are when they all can see the same logical fallacy.

Any real Christians... blah, blah, blah. Sure, you're here to troll, troll.
THIS one deserves more than just a <LIKE>. Yep another self-righteous person just talking to "real" Christians..... all the rest of you don't count.

Ever notice how God always agrees with what WE like, and is against what WE happen to dislike? Funny how that works.

The slide whistle is probably ok, but that kazoo thingy? Yeah, one way ticket to the lake of fire for sure...........

Nah, no challenge. It would be like playing "Where's Waldo" with a page with one character on it.

SaintJoeNow you still haven't answered the question many have asked you now - what kind of music DO you like?

p_rehbein,

I like Christian music; but I can't answer to the 'only' part. I also like traditional folk music (which is also the foundation for many hymns); and classical. If that excludes me I'll leave .
Me too...........no need to leave though........and I was trying to rewrite the original post for that Saint Jo guy.....not really my thoughts: I like many genres of music...........as Lady Bug said......the "words" are what make it acceptable or not acceptable.........God bless, and welcome to CC.

I guess he considers that question to be too antagonistic.

Actually............. :) ............. I was thinking about this before I drifted off to sleep last night........and I realized that he specifically stated "holiness" in his OP. Then he dissed on Christian Country Music............and I'm thinking, hey...wait...aren't all Christian Country Music singers "holiness?" Or "Pentecostal?" Hmmmm

If you have to ask what's wrong with rock, country, rap, jazz, CCM, raegae, whatever......you probably won't listen if I tell you so I won't tell you. People who don't agree with the OP only want to pick a fight over it here and I won't talk to them. If you don't like, don't understand, or don't agree with the OP of this thread, I didn't want you to come here and I"m not going to talk to you.
Hey! Asking you a simple question of what type of music you like is not a pick on you. You need to stop this childish behvior. God has given us the ability to make music, To praise him in music to write and co write music together to give him the glory. He did not specify what type of music we should listen to or write or compose. Music can speak to people in many different ways. what ever the style it is. The music is not bad, its the Lyrics that accompany the music is bad. Just because you don't like certain types of music, don't mean you should harp on about it, " excuse the pun " Fine you dont like that type of music, fine we get that. but you are being the ignorant one by not answering people's questions. So in that? you are only going to get negative in return to the negative question you asked. You brought this upon yourself.

I've found the posts from our residential CC music experts to be particularly interesting...

Apparently it never occurred to the OP that several Christian people here actually write, create, play, and teach music both as part of their worship and service to God, and also as a way of making a living... meaning that they can speak with a bit more authority about the subject because they have a large pool of professional (as well as spiritual) experience.
