Is there like, a reason we should celebrate Earth Day?

Maybe that's a stupid question. Hmm. I'll try again.

I don't personally feel that "celebrating the Earth" is cool. I don't buy into the global warming scare, I don't recycle, I don't hug trees.

I DO think it's a good idea for people to clean up after themselves, take care of the place we live...to a logical extent. But then I hear the term "carbon foot print" and how that's a bad thing, and I wonder...when did this chunk of rock get personified? "Treat Mother Earth right"...

I don't know. I hope I'm not offending anyone with this, but a lot of times, it seems like the extreme "tree huggers" out there would prefer if humans would just go away and leave Mother Earth alone and stop messing "her" up. And I think they're lunatics.

It's all really weird. And it seems like, with all the hype about "going green" and whatnot, it's almost a religion. I mean, probably it is for some people.

I guess what I'm getting at is, at what point in "saving the earth" should Christians stop and say "Ok, this is just nuts and I'm not gonna worship the planet, mmkay?"

Um...yeah, I don't expect a lot of responses to this, I just didn't want to throw off any other threads with my weird ideas/questions.

I once had someone say that they thought was wrong to cut down trees. They actually said, "What about the trees feelings about this? Did you ask the tree if it was OK?"
I replied, "Next time, I will ask the tree and say, 'If you have any objection, just say so; otherwise you can choose to remain silent'."
Ba dum dum!

In the words of Jack Handey, "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? Maybe, if they screamed all the time, for no reason."

I think I was 13 or 14 when that aired, and I laughed for a solid 5 minutes.

Hah... you post gave me a new twist on something I have heard said...
If a tree screamed in the woods and no one was around to hear it, would it make a sound?

God did give all things on earth to man, so I think it's our responsibility, like you said to clean up after ourselves and take care of things like we should, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But no, I don't buy into global warming at all. One of my favorite authors is Michael Crichton, and he wrote a book called State of Fear that was about eco-terrorist (sounds weird, but it's good), anyone who knows Crichton knows that he overloads a ton of scientific fact into his stories, in this case there was a lot on global warming. That fact is a hard global warming push in politics never happened, or was even thought of until the mid 80's, and even then it was based more on theory than fact. Another issue he pointed out was that global warming "experts" compare whether patterns over 5 and 10 year time periods, but the fact is in order to see any similarity in weather patterns at all you need to back track at least 100 years, and even then the patterns aren't an exact match with each other.

To me, whether they claim it or not, a lot of people do treat nature and earthy stuff as a religion. If they were as concerned about recycling as they claim they'd have us do what they do in Germany and rather than just having garbage service, there would be recycling service as well. And to me going so far as to call something "Mother Nature" is kind of like making it a deity, and a god, or goddess, that needs to be taken care of isn't much of a deity.

I'm a simpleton. I feel that if we just walked in love with one another & stopped talking about what Jesus wants us to do & just did it,there would be no need for earth day or any of these other save this! , help that! blah blah blah events or holidays...they would all be taken care of as a side effect from our obedience to God.

Actually a lot of cities require garbage companies to provide "single stream" recycling service where you put all your recyclables in a seperate container for pickup.

I don't buy into the global warming thing either however I do believe the God expects us to be good stewards of this planet that He gave us.

Yeah, there's select cities here that do it, but not many.

They did that here for years, but then all of a sudden a couple years ago they made it where
it was no longer included in the price of garbage pick up, so people stopped recycling as much.

The smart thing would have been to have us all save our recyclables and one person every two
weeks would go drop it off at the plant that is 15 minutes away. If they only had my mind.;)

If people bothered to, for instance, turn off lights in rooms they didn't use, EVERY day, rather than making a big fuzz sbout stuff on earth day, the earth would be much better off... :p

So in a nutshell.... you're saying you think it's unchristian to have a passion for preserving nature?

This post honestly shocked me a bit. I'm not really sure what to say about it. But I love trees. I mourn the death of an old tree more than the death of a house pet. If that makes me a lunatic to some people...I guess I'll have to live with that.

No, no! I'm not saying that at all! Oh man. I'll try to be more clear...

There are people whose main cause in life is to...save this plant, save that animal, sometimes to the point of risking their own lives so that a single plant or critter can live a little while longer.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a passion for preserving nature. I spend a lot of time in the great outdoors, I like to hike, river raft, camp, all that. And I am careful to clean up after myself so others can enjoy the same scenery. I think it's wrong to trample through and destroy nature just because we're bigger and we can.

What I meant was, there is a point where that passion over rides everything else for some people, and the earth then becomes, like zaoman said, a deity to them. So what I'm saying is, I don't know exactly where that point lies, but I feel that if preserving nature gets to be more important than your own life, or the lives of those around you, or...that's lunacy, and unchristian.

I don't know if I'm explaining it right, still. I'll try again in the morning.

As the resident expert on all things witchy, Mother Earth is a deity. Mother Earth and Father Sky. Most of the European gods and goddesses originated in Africa (Ra, Osiris, etc) but we stole them. Stole and changed them. Sort of... it's a little complicated. But! Yes, Mother Earth is worshiped and goes by other names. Lots of other names.

So if you want the low down, PM me. I'd be willing to tell you what I got myself into, but I'm not willing to tell just anyone.

I got your post, Cris, and i'm 100% in agreement. I'm not 'green'. If they want to give me a recycle bin, i'll use it. But i'm not paying extra for it, or going out of my way to do it. I doubt we'll be around long enough to see the long term effects anyways. God's going to do a lot more damage to this planet before then. So i'll do the 'reasonable' amount to not litter, and whatnot. But that's it.
My favorite is Obama, pushing all this 'green' on us, but he can't travel to the next state without his private jet. How green is that?

Everything to be done in moderation, so cut trees, plant trees. Taking care of the earth means preserving it, preserving it means doing all the necessary things to withhold extinction of certain plants and animals and have a good number of each tree and animal specie out there.

And yes, when we worship trees and animals we will risk our lives for them. oh go into OVER DRIVE on the whole save Mother nature thing..

and well when i finish a bottle of soda(in plastic casings), i have programmed myself NEVER to throw it anywhere. i would carry it with me ANYWHERE i go until i meet a recycle bin. that is the same with even the smallest piece of dirt, a sweet wrapper, a piece of paper.etc. allllllll go to the bin.
just gets me thinking, if i throw a lil bit, someother dude might come and see ooh, a dumpster might be starting here so woohoo there goes my plastic bottle, or this small piece of paper, and it all piles up day by day.

Save the Earth lol.

biblically this world is been destroyed daily, and if the LORD would not come, NONE would be able to survive the changes going to this world. basically human beings would go extinct if there was NO GOD.

Thank GOD for His second coming.
