I am with Cris. At a few starbucks shops here, I see many Philippinos working and some women that I would say is nearing their 40s. Not really 'hip'....not that 40 year olds aren't hip..

At age 43, I'll have to get a new hip? That seems a little extreme. Guess I've got 8 more years to enjoy the one I've got.

"Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone."- Baz Luhrmann

Except, you know, your hips, instead of (along with?) your knees.

Yeah, that was pretty evident. Most restaurants are to be honest with you, especially with servers and reservers. That's really how that works. And they say you can't judge a book by its cover.

Oh, well. I guess it could be worse. You could be serving coffee and cappuccinos in bikinis, I guess. Isn't that objectifying?

Gabe, I totally know what you meant. ;) Though, I met a lot of different people while working at Starbucks. Although it's become a bit more diverse, I think generally speaking it's the patrons of Starbucks who are a bit more like what you've described than just the employees. The patrons always seemed a bit more consistent than those who were hired to work there. My boss at the Starbucks I worked at in Hawaii was a pot smoking Japanese guy named Hiroshi Ogoshi and he was the most laid back, amazing boss ever! And still got things done. It was fun.
I had to stop working there though because I was working at Red Lobster at the same time and it was a crazy schedule. I lived a few miles away and the bus didn't run early enough for me to catch it to open Starbucks in the mornings so I had to take sleep medicine so that I could go to bed at 7:00pm and wake up at 2:00am to be on the road by 3:00am to be at work by 4:00am. I'd work from 4-11 then go take the bus home, sleep a couple hours, get ready and be at work at Red Lobster at 5:00 and work until 11 or 12. o_o I almost died during those six months....I did NOT want to leave Starbucks because I MUCH preferred the environment there to the one at Red Lobster but I made way more money at Red Lobster. *sigh* Those were the days....

Sorry Catlynn, I hope I didn't make you feel like you had to respond (even though I probably did). And I don't even drink coffee.

Perhaps these are the long term side effects of overexposure to coffee

Bite your tongue! :D Coffee is a wonderful gift from God. I believe he uses a French press to brew his favorite roast!

Come on we're talking Starbucks here. Its one of the hippest hottest places for young people to work these days besides the Apple store. It wouldn't matter if the economy was surging, starbucks is and was still a hip place for young people to work, so you'll find a lot of hip young people working there (note: hip does not = hippy). Although I read a recent article by someone who worked there and she said that working there actually sucks.

Starbucks is a HORRIBLE place to work. Ugh! I was there for 2 years, and it was a little piece of hell on earth.

Why? I'm curious, because one of my aunts (who had never worked there) kept trying to get me to apply when I was in high school/college, because they have "great benefits, even for part-time workers".

I think Starbucks is a bit overrated (though I will get something if I am there), but I prefer local coffee places anyway. :)

Starbucks is bad to work for because they're deceitful. The benefits are great, if you can maintain your hours. It's really expensive insurance to boot. You can do a 401k, which is great, but if your hours are unstable, it's difficult to build up. And personally, my store was built in a new (and uncompleted) residential area. It was a BIG store, but we didn't get constant traffic. We did get a lot of spoiled teenagers, so that was nice. They ended up closing down the store because we weren't a drive thru, we didn't get a lot of traffic, and the major economic crash happened. The funny thing is, where my Starbucks used to be, an independent coffee shop opened.

Irony is awesome.

Starbucks employees don't make enough money in my opinion. You'd think with the price of the coffee, they would be able to dish out more than minimum wage.
