I just spent almost 2 hours grocery shopping. The store was packed, and I had about 40 items I had to hunt down just because I had a coupon.

You know how women look into their (full) closets and lament that they have nothing to wear?

I'm like that with food.

I just put away 10 bags of groceries...

And now I'm staring at my cupboard thinking, "I have nothing to eat."

Does anyone else wonder this, or am I missing something?

I subscribe to a few YouTube channels in which people regularly visit and film some of my favorite places and/or places I'd like to see someday.

I've always wondered though... HOW are these people able to afford these kinds of trips? Most of them are in their late 20's-30's.

I understand that some people might be able to travel for work, but there are a couple channels I watch in which these people are going to Disneyland almost every day (I get it, they live there), but then make several playlists of themselves at Disneyworld, which is across the country.

The part that confuses me is that they all ask people to donate to their channels/become a "Patreon." Yes, I understand it must be a huge undertaking and expense to produce their videos.

But am I wrong in also feeling a little leary about possibly sending people on constant vacations that I can't take myself?

Maybe I'm being too judgemental, but to me, it's the worldly equivalent of TV evangelists who travel via private planes... But then ask everyone else to be the ones to pay for it.

What's everyone else's take on this?

No you're not missing something and you're right in the way you feel. Through advertising and product endorsement, the more views they have the more dollars they collect.

One youtuber for example, if the girl held up a different toilet paper roll her minions would go out and buy it. Her video's consist of 15 minutes of product after product review, something anyone can do. Her vlogs are just grocery shopping and waiting for her bf to come home and put it away for her. It's quite sad so I have nothing to do with it.

Yes. We will spend $100 at the grocery, get home, put them away, and go right out to eat. Why? "We just spent $100 and there's nothing to eat. So where'd that $100 in food go?'.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, Laura :).

Yeah... I've read different things about how the YouTube world works... I guess I'm a little naive.

I'm constantly struggling to find a balance between giving people the benefit of the doubt... and using common sense.

Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful reply. :)

So I was just reading over the menu in some fancy restaurant at the new Shanghai Disneyland (what can I say, I live a lot of my life vicariously :).)

One of the boasted delicacies on the menu was "Milk-Fed Lamb Two Ways."

Now don't get me wrong. I'm all for being a well-informed consumer. So maybe it's just me...

But I really don't want to know what my dinner... had for dinner. Seriously. That's just a little too much information.

And when they say, "Two Ways", do they mean that the lamb was fed the milk in two different ways (from a bottle, and fresh from the source?), or does it mean that the LAMB will be served to you in two different ways? (With, or without, wool.)

I'm going to guess that it comes with a free sweater on the side, in lieu of a dinner napkin.

I have a relative who is always going to places like that with his family and I hear he has a very popular blog with lots of fans because he writes reviews of these places and he's younger than me I think. How is he able to afford it you ask?... He owns a medical clinic and he's a doctor. :p

I watch a very few prepper/homestead youtubers. Not many, just.... alot and I'm not one of those crazy preppers with dried beans in a safety deposit box or anything - just going on record. I mean, I carry extra shoelaces for tying off umbilical cords, of course., but nothing crazy. Then again, this isn't about me.

There is this family youtube channel homesteader that I'm actually considering being a patreon. They live completely off grid - no electricity except solar to charge their computer and phones. They use propane but no ac or heat other than wood burning stoves; they keep their own animals and grow vegetables and sell a few items they make. They have 3 kids and actually live with in-laws. I've literally watched them turn gray. i've only watched them about 6 months..well more than that. Maybe like a year. And six months. And they can all their food - even their meat. Don't know if you've ever had canned meat. If you like soggy steak, you're in luck, but canned meat is not the best. But I've watched the poor wife turn gray. Otherwise, the whole family are truly honest, good character and high quality folks and love the Lord. The main guy is a legalist with a kind of twist, but their faith is very strong.

There is another channel I watch, but this guy HAS to be a millionaire. He has so many tools and things I would love love love to have. He even has a portable saw mill! And a 75cc 36" Stihl chainsaw. He also has a wife who works the garden. So like, those are things that would entice any guy so I subscribe but don't really get involved otherwise. He's got a very good show though.

What is it we were talking about again?

I subscribe to a few travel blogs too. I think the bloggers do get really good deals and offers from hotels and resorts. I follow one on Facebook called the Blonde Abroad. You can tell from her posts that she isn't paying for everything. I think she gets deals and the hotels get exposure.

Now, the real question is, how do we get a job like that?!

Dear Kim: Thanks a lot. I was trying to eat supper and now I have to clean up cornbread crumbs that went all over the place when I read that line. :p

And if you just put ten bags of groceries away, I would like to bounce around your kitchen and see what I can put together.

There is this guy on youtube that I used to subscribe to (just got bored after awhile). He owned a porsche, a mclaren and a ferrari. All at the same time and all new. Plus he looks to be around 30. I like him because he doesn't have a conceited attitude like some of the rich car owners on there. He mentioned in one video that he works in finance which makes perfect sense to me because I wanted to be an investment banker once and those guys make very good money... and he also has a pleasant demeanor like those who work in that industry.

Oh look, here he is...

lol, this could have been its own thread.

On the one hand, yes, it's a little suspect. On the other, travel is part of entertaining, so you're going to all those places at your own expense in order to make money. It's kind of like the circus.

In my experience, there are not a lot of stationary, consistently lucrative jobs in entertainment (as a performer).

A lot of actors/actresses, musicians, artists, and the like have day jobs aside from their creative abilities.

Go for it, Zero!

You're here A LOT more than I am, and you write awesome threads. :D

And, I agree, it's a perfect subject for a thread. :p
I realize that was directed at my man, ZT, but what if he (or I) is not much of a tailor? ^_~ Can't be messin' with those threads...

Heh. :)

But the thing is, I'm not the only person around here who can (or should be :p) writing threads! :D We have LOTS of talented people here who are great at doing so (or would be, if they give it a try. :))

I tend to refrain a lot these days because of life, work, and the fact that I don't want to seem like I'm dominating the forum.

In reality though, I almost always have a question or a thought running through my head...

Holy Cow...

My eyes snapped open because of a bright wave of light streaming against the windows, so I thought it must be around 6:30 (when dawn starts to break around here.)

I was shocked to see that it was only 4 AM, and that the incredibly bright light straining through the closed shades... was actually the moon.

I could be wrong about this, but I believe that the Bible says that in heaven, there is no need for the sun, moon, and stars in heaven because God's light will shine so bright? So every time I look at the sky, I try to be thankful for these beautiful lights we get to see on earth.

I'm going to stay up a while and watch the moon.

Come on over and enjoy the view.

I don't have any problem with you dominating the forum with threads.. in fact, I welcome it! If I do make a thread about the youtube thing I would prefer to just quote your post and put it up as the OP since its better than anything I could come up with.

Monday night is going to be the super moon! There's a thread about it in the Misc. forum. It only happens like every hundred years or something like that.

Here's the thread:

Aw... Thanks, Zero. Very kind of you.

One of the reasons I wrote threads was to hopefully encourage OTHER PEOPLE to write their own threads as well, and you do an excellent job on your own.

I remember several years back there was a week when you were writing a new thread almost every day, and so every day I'd get up and check the answers before work... And it made me smile every time.

You are most welcome to quote my post, and thank you so much for the thoughtful compliment.
