Normally I ignore this kind of thing, but why did the OP start this thread given he has already started the same thread 4 years ago?

Tipping your server?

I mean if it is a genuine interest, just, dare I say, revive the old one.

What are your thoughts on tipping, specifically at a dine-in restaurant?

1. How much do you tip for average service?
2. What do you consider to constitute "average service"?
3. How much do you tip for less than acceptable service?
4. Is it ever okay to tip nothing to your server, and if so, when? If not, why not?
5. Should you tip more if you were difficult (had finicky kids, a complicated request, etc)?
5.1 Should you tip less if you were pleasant (acted very politely, altered your order to make the server's job easier, etc)?
6. Any other thoughts on the subject?

I tip a dollar for every 5 i spend if I'm at a dine-in restaurant (rounding up for uneven amounts), more if the service was remarkably good.

Personally, I would never NOT tip, even if i received poor service. Not my style, and not something i would feel good about.

I think it has to do with that mental thing called "Leap Year Syndrome."

Maybe he forgot he posted it 4 years ago. I don't know why some are making such a big deal about him posting this. Maybe a food server and was curious. Give it a break guys.

I was a server at a local Red Robin for a few years. On an slow (middle of the week) night I'd go home with about 300 bucks for a 6 hour shift, and that's after tipping out to bussers. That's nothing compared to a busy night and even less compared to what the females made.

So even on a slow night, I'd be making $50 an hour. Most of my coworkers were in community college or college dropouts, and after covering rent they would have a ton leftover. A few used it for drugs. Most used it to get completely wasted on alcohol almost every night they weren't working. Despite making ~$1000 a week after taxes, they were constantly out of money. Me and an older lady were the only ones who saved our money.

I did enjoy receiving $50+ an hour, but I definitely didnt deserve it and after seeing that, I rarely tip anymore.

Most waitresses I know make really good money. I agree with Shour though, that we need to get rid of the obligation to tip by paying the waitstaff a fair wage and encouraging people to tip based on actual service above and beyond what is expected. When gratuity is forced, it isn't gratuity anymore.
