My friend's husband did this. He didn't consult her beforehand, just went out and got the tattoo. Luckily she found it romantic.

Mhmm... Yes... Exactly what I was thinking... Angie, get out of my brain! :D

That's what she does. She's like a mole.

The Elvish engagement/wedding ring has been done, and done quite a bit, Arwen. Google it.

Going back to the the diamonds-and-DeBeers bit...

I remember running into this article last year that made my eyebrow hop (a la Nimoy).

Bustle

The long and short of it was that the real purpose of an engagement ring (even before diamonds were involved) was to serve as a contract: the ring was an object of value given to the bride-to-be as collateral, as it were. As a part of the unspoken contract, the collateral was protection for the woman, as with an agreement to marry, the man could ask for sex prior to the marriage, and if something went wrong, the woman at least had something of monetary value in return for losing her chastity. It was, in effect, virginity/reputation insurance. If the man ruined the woman's reputation by consummating but not marrying her, the jewelry was hers.
Back then promiscuous girls were easy to spot.

I use to be engaged and this was my ring. I loved it. I don't know much about rings but I loved the curvature of it. It's actually even more pretty compared to the picture. I didn't keep the ring when we broke up. I gave it back to him. Now, I don't care so much for rings anymore... They mean nothing if the heart of the relationship doesn't mean anything. And I wouldn't mind going for something cheaper as well.

Etsy does have some very interesting engagement rings! (I feel very sheepish looking at them)

But look at these ones!

... and then mother walks past me as I am looking at engagement rings. Awkward.

My all time favorite stone. Love opals...now if it had blackhills gold with it, it would be perfect.
