Great attitude. A teenager is interested in the bible. Finds something that he feels is questionable and sparks a conversation to get answers to his question and your response? 'stoopid' (by the way, it's spelled 'stupid'). Thats a great way to encourage people. Name calling and insults.

I think skimming the bible sometimes is a good thing. In this case it caused someone to learn more about the bible, and encouraged a discussion among believers on the topic. Well, except for the one guy that had to criticize and judge...

I know stupid is spelt this way, I was being amusing with the 'stoopid' remark. . I could reply with the fact that I am actually English and therefore actually write and speak it correctly rather than dropping letters (vowels) and mis pronouncing words (for example when saying route(root) often over there it is pronounced rout)

However semantics. . .

Now onto 'skimming' the bible, let me ask you would you sign a skim read contract or would you consider that stupid?

;)

The Bible is pretty clear. Most people who get beatings from their parents for doing something wrong are extremely thankful to their parents for doing it. It says it twice in the verse that you should beat your child with a rod as a form of correction if he does something in opposition to the Word of God. We shouldn't change this verse to agree with today's worldly standards of correction.

We also shouldn't pretend it means beating a child severely or without purpose and control.

There's this thing called context...

And what of those who do? They are obeying the word of God in its litteral sence, "Thou shalt beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell." They are doing God's will, but to the extreme that we call "abuse".

The Bible is not just one verse.

If children are taught properly from day one and given good moral compass as a child with much emphasis being placed on repect for others there is hardly, if ever a need to spank a child. Even at the age of two children are capable of discerning good from bad (the terrible twos) they are pushing their borders of their world to see how far they go. Much patience and energy is required during this period and if we are young when we have children we have lots of energy but less patience which is generally true whereas when we are older we have more patience and WAY less energy.

I believe that these particular passages may have more referrence to Teenage boys and girls who just like when they were two are pushing their boundaries in their continual pursuit of freedom from what they might deem to be an oppresive parent or antiquated culture that just doesn't jive with the views of themselves and their colleagues.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
If we use Jesus as our model we find that he never struck even one man!
Yes he threw the money Changers out of the temple. (wouldn't you if someone were defiling your fathers house?) but he never struck anyone!
Perhaps we should follow that model and not the frustration and wrath we feel when we have corrected our child for the umpteenth time?
Gods been very very very patient with us perhaps we should show the same kind of patience with our children?

How does a spanking clear the head?
The kid sins, the dad/mother spanks the kid so the kid doesnt do that again.
The kid will learn that it's wrong and wont do it again, so he wont grow up with that sin.
Got it ?

I like Jesus's model better as a father of three I can tell you honestly that spanking only makes your children despise you more not to mention the fact you are reinforcing your will with a violent act.
I know what your saying as I myself have spanked my own children from time to time but when you sit back and look at it you realize it is erroneous.
The Lord never spanked any children or struck any man or woman so I have to go with the Jesus model on this one as it proved to me that corporal punishment with children just doesn't work the way it's supposed to.
A negative and a negative doesn't make a positive just a double negative.

i don't believe physical violence is necessary , love is enough. there are many ways to read the bible, but when u read it with love u won't interpret it that way. when a parent beat their children literally is often after they lost self control so take out on the child. it's the old testament but now we live a new covenant , the covenant of love , God's laws are written on our hearts

Physcial violence is such a crude and overdone device. There are other fun ways to manipulate your child's thoughts and behaviors for your advantage.

I dont like the word beating it sounds so harsh. I attend a christian boarding school where paddling is an option to other discipline usually for guys but sometimes girls. Parents have to sign a consent , I guess most do. Teachers cannot do it and it left to the coaches. I cant say that I like it but we don't have fights or drugs at school and we have respect for our teachers.Maybe we are just good kids after all.

Beating is not necessary, it's IMPORTANT..

You don't have to beat your child, if they push you to the wall, then there is a time when you need to really ponder using the *Rod*..I was born in a country where beating is allowed. And i've been BEATEN a lot of times.. Wait, let me repeat the word.. B.E.A.T.I.N.G!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I'm not dead now am i?.. Did i learn from this?. YES... Sometimes it's just important to really beat your children

I think saying it's wrong because there's no record of Jesus doing it is wrong, too. Jesus never got married or had kids, and the Bible doesn't instruct us to spank other people's children but to discipline our own children. I was raised being beaten by an angry parent and that is not what the Bible is encouraging, but my daughter is being raised by a parent that applies the "rod of correction" and has yet to express disdain for it as an effective tool. I can't say that either one of us enjoy it though.

It's important to understand that people aren't basically good, but basically evil. I was beat as a child and I can honestly say that I learned my lesson regarding the things that I wasn't supposed to do, and it toughened me up too. I believe that we should stop letting DHS dictate how we discipline our children and start following the Biblical standards for correction.

We correct ,spank, discipline our kids because we love them. It does hurt to do it sometime because we hate to see them cry but it's for their own good. Just don't ever spank them when you are in a rage and have a lot of anger because you could really hurt them and that would be called abuse.Always let them know why you spanked them or punish them, so it's clear to them what is right and what is wrong.

Perhaps a spanking would be acceptable for a child under a certain age, but after a while, and I speak from my perspective, it stops working. For a toddler a spanking would let them know that whatever they did to get the spanking is wrong so they shouldn't do it anymore, but for a teenager they would just see what they did to get caught as being wrong and find different, sneakier ways of doing what they did so as to not get caught. Or maybe thats just every teenager that I know.

I was skimming through the bible and stumble across this:

"Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell." Proverbs 23: 13-14

What exactly is it saying here, because i certainly do not want to be beaten with a rod as a way of delivering me from hell. Please, share your thoughts.
When I was must punish my children I had feeling that I punished myself. Thank God my children enough adult(teens 16-17 age). I love them so much and praying for them. It's come time himself pick their right way. Thank God that I have my family and children.

In the Bible said what I'm feeling:
"my cup overflows"

My Lord is Jesus Christ you're so wonderfull...

I agree that there are different forms of discipline. A verbal rebuke, being grounded, having privileges stopped as well as a spanking. I had all of these when I was a child and am better for it. In the UK there people are scared to spank their children. The government stepped in and laid down all sorts of guidelines about what a parent could and could not do. Now we have generations of unruly kids who may have turned out better if they got thier backsides whopped occasionally.

I do not have a problem with spankign children but I wholeheartedly agree with kenneth2816. It should be done as a form of correrction and in love, not cos we got real mad and wanted to beat the hell out of our kids. When I was a child and I got my mum or dad really angry, I would be sent to my room while they calmed down. Then after that, I would be called downstairs and given my punishment, whether it was a spanking or something else. I think we also need to expalin to our children why they are being punished, why their behaviour was wrong and what would have been the right way to behave.
