That depends on who you ask.

Is there any particular reason that you're concerned about Mormonism?

All I know of mormonism are the things my old boss I used to work for said. Her & her husband grew up in Utah & her family was very heavy into mormonism...matter of fact she said her father was very esteemed & a high ranking person in their church,so she got to see a lot of crazy stuff. They do believe in Jesus & parts of the bible, but even she said herself there's a ton of non-biblical things that go on & cult-like stuff, which teeters on true paganistic rituals. Some stuff she didn't even want to talk about. She mentioned something about sacred underwear & other bizzare things too. I thought she was pulling my leg,but I have heard from some other people that were involved in mormonism too, that there are some strange happenings deep in the religion. I don't think the heart of it is based at all in christianity. Read about John Smith, pretty crazy stuff.

mormons consider themselves christians but they follow a secret society format similar in nature to the masons. you must 'climb the ladder' of initiation into higher orders of esoteric knowledge. that is why they are considered a cult. as well as thier doctrine of works as opposed to grace

I read some of the Book of Mormon, I agree, it's badly written, especially if you compare it to the quality of bible texts.

In a strict biblical sense Mormons are not Christians. They are a cult that teaches that heaven is attained by works prescribed in their religious writ. I have heard that they teach that Jesus and the devil are brothers. They do teach that the book of Mormon is of equal or superior value to the bible. They have some lesser know books that are equally spooky. Praying and baptisms for the dead. All kinds of fun stuff for cultists.

Matt,

First, all the mormons I know are very sweet people.
So you should treat them very kindly, and with respect.

Second, their beliefs are not considered orthodox by any orthodox denominations.

Third, none of them know anything about the masons, or secret societies. If anything they believe seems similar, the members know nothing about it, and will think you're crazy if you mention it.

Fourth, there are lots of orthodox books written about mormonism, explaining both their theology and history.
You should probably continue your reading.

Fifth, I'm sure there are some mormons who frequent CC. Even though I disagree with their theology, I recommend you be polite to them. They'll probably show up in this thread to defend their beliefs.

Btw..I just wanted to clarify...I wasn't trying to be down on mormons. My ex-boss was a sweetheart & I believe many who follow the mormon religion do so out of a pure heart. With that said,I just don't think that what they follow would be the proper teachings of Jesus outlined within the bible. They do make some awesome tv commercials though. :)

Are mormons considerd christians?
Mormons are in NO way a Christian denomination. They are a "cult".

They would like to be known as Christians but are far from them.

They believe in Father god and Mother God and that you are here because of their relationship/reproduction.

They believe that Joseph Smith must recomend you for salvation.

They belive that Gaberial gave J. Smith the gospel and he wrote it on golden tablets which have never beed found.

They believe in salvation AFTER beath if you are baptized.

They believe the Bible is the WOrd of God ONLY after it is interpreted by the Book of Mormon.

They believe that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers.

And the list goes on and on. NOW, does that sound like Christian doctrine?

I don't think they believe in Christ. They say the name, they follow His teachings except only as teachings. From the second that God created our earth, Christ was part of that and I think that Christ as God and Savior has to be in a Christian religion.

I think the people who join are deluded, I am sorry for them. Yet I see that they use the instructions that God gives us to live in His kingdom, and My, how these instructions have worked for them. It makes me wonder. My Mormon cousin is so successful as a woman that she was once voted the top professor in her field in the US, she has a whole building at the University she teaches at as hers, and she was behind the development of a vital component of our space ships.

The really frightening thing about this cult is the tactics they use to keep their members loyal. They are a wonderful support group for each other, something our physical and church families are lacking in. If you quit the church you lose this support, a frightening thing. They also don't have our trouble with the law. By living as much as they can according to God's instructions it leads to success in this life. They point to that as proof of their being right with the Lord.

I learn from them, but part of the learning is how important the forgiveness Christ offers us as children of the Lord is to us. Without that, all the rest as profitable as it is to us, is still useless.

So then it is not by appearances but the heart of a person.

Mormons pray in the name of Jesus....and that is about it. They do not pray to Jesus or talk much about him. Doesn't sound like a Christian to me.

I thought that followers of Christ are to go into their closets to pray and not to pray openly for show like church leaders do today?
