These newbies done nothing but try to shut me down for no real reason... it's not my fault they get convicted easily
But it's the Holy Spirit that convicts, not some bitter, angry teen.

Well, that's embarrassing. I had Paul's epistles on my mind, but I meant one of John's letters. I believe she's referring to 1st John. I can't remember which passage though.

I see
I will look into it.
Although I do not understand why I give you a book that presents both sides and you give me one that has one side
quite simply because i don't doubt you know what your side is saying, if you want a book about Jesus, why not open the bible?
also having read it, i am of the opinion that strobel is not giving both side of the issue, not even close. he is an extremely bigotted close minded christian. he is not the best source to understand what atheists are saying. you cannot dismiss atheists based on a completely wrong idea of what they are saying. popeye's post for example is the most ignorant an ridiculous thing i have read all day, by far:

Atheism is a religion.

Your bible is Darwin's origin of species.
Your churches are the public schools where your priests teach from your bible
Your congregation is all america's children
Your blood sacrifice is the unborn innocent children
Your God is self worship/"science" ....even your science is faith science.(asking a human being to believe the impossible...evolution)

Your false prophets are the media and secular humanism?situational ethics teachers and professors.

Here's the book. I looked at the contents. No surprises there. None of these questions are taxing. Some would just take a lot longer to answer than others. This book presents no threat to me or to my faith.

oh the question are not meant to threaten, they are meant to explain the atheist point of view on them. so you can see it is not complete nonsense. you might agree or disagree with what he says but at least you will know what atheists are saying, and you can refute that, not the weird distorted conception of it you have at the moment.

Dude, you say you're a Christian, but you seem to stick up an awful lot for atheist ideals. I don't have a weird, distorted conception of what atheists believe, I have dear friends that are atheists. And while such books aren't threatening, some atheists absolutely use such measures to try and stump Christians. I wasn't born yesterday.

whatever... i'm just trying to not be so full of myself that i consider i can not be wrong about something. i give everybody some respect and i listen to what they say if it is nonsense, then i dismiss it. if it is coherent, i give it some thought. i think nobody can claim that what we believe in as christian is absolutely coherent and foolproof. there would be only one kind of christians on earth if that was the case. i'm all for inquiry and debate and thining trough what people who don't agree with me have to say. you seem to think that's a waste of time. i think that is fairly close minded.

I absolutely don't believe I know everything and that I can't be wrong about anything. I too enjoy hearing what others have to say. There's no point if I just surround myself with Yes men or women. As for your assertions about atheism not being a religion, I think that's fairly close-minded.

i just think that if we call atheism a religion then the word religion loses all meaning.
it is a bit like saying that bald is a hair color... atheism is not believing in a god: A -THEISM. i don't see how that's religious, frankly

Unwise woman, foolish like many in this world. Don't you ever dare to mess with God's anointed.
Timothy 5:1-2Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

I see what you're saying. I think the disagreement is stemming from a difference in how you're each defining the word "religion." If religion is defined as "the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods," then you are 100% correct that calling atheism a religion would be ridiculous.

However, I think the person that stated that atheism is a "religion" would've been better suited to say that atheism is a system of belief just like Christianity is a system of belief. To say that both are "religions" is fallacy however.

Does it really? I could be religious about waking up at 0430 every morning.

thanks for clarifying my point. i'm perfectly comfortable with calling atheism a system of belief.

which bring me to my center of interest those days:
what makes a belief true or false...
or to be more precise, justified or unjustified

Homeslice, I remember when you were 15 years old. From this end, it doesn't look like much has changed over the years.

Sorry, but the word religion doesn't have to relate at all to a belief in God.
fair enough but atheism is not a system of thought nor even an organised movement. it is a default position.
atheism is theism (belief in the existence of a deity) with the negative prefix A in front of it. it is used as and means the concept of not believing in a deity. atheism is an absence of belief, by all definition and ethymology. i don't see why people insist on calling it a religion. it doesn't make any sense and make us christians pass for ignorant fools. let's be rigorous in our use of words.
