That church actually had a dress code: Men must wear suits and women must wear long dresses. That church also had a school (Kindergarten - 12th grade) and the students had to sign an agreement that they would not go to the movies and if someone caught them at a movie theatre, they could be expelled. Women were also not allowed to pick up their child at school (actually walk into the school at that church) to pick up their child unless they were wearing a long dress.
That'd be the day that anybody would dictate how and when I could pick up a child that was mine ... or even go to a movie. Never happen.

Has anyone noticed that it's been mentioned by some that do smoke that they also drink? I'm not condemning those that do, but what I'll think you'll find is those that allow "questionable" things in their lives allow a lot of questionable things in their lives, such as, for example, light cussing.

My point? Those that abide in the so-called "gray areas" will unwittingly cross the black line & keep saying "I'm alright".
Only thing I've noticed is that some don't condemn themselves for having a glass of wine here and there or dare I say, maybe even the occasional beer. I despise cussing incidentally. Maybe because it's something that comes out of our mouths rather than go in ?

I heard something this morning that we all can learn from:

Never allow other people's sinning against us to allow the sin that is in our flesh to be activated and cause us to be sinning in return.

It's paramount to learn how to walk by the spirit so that we don't fulfill the lusts of the flesh to do "it's" desires.

That same verse has been used over & over to justify it, I have seen it myself.

Okay, you guys wanna know why the harping on this sin?

I'll tell you..... NONE of the people that are gluttons, abuse caffeine, etc., use the scriptures to justify their sins, like these do.

There, I said it.

That's what makes them worse..... using God's word as an excuse. The others don't do that.

Any lame excuse in the world would have been better than saying "the Bible says it's alright."
Your list is growing...drinking coffee is a sin too?

Yes I read what you posted that's why I repsonded.
My shoes do fit.

You said people use the verses out of context to justify smoking and drinking.

I fully know and understand the verses you used in their context. But to be honest to me you took it further with regard to smoking and drinking and said it's and excuse and shame on you.

thats calling people shameful.

Yes we all sin but did I call you shamefull for admitting that and make you feel a second class citizen?
You haven't been scammed at all.

ALL OF THE TIME?

I didn't get mad at all. I just replied to you in your language.

Seems to me it was you who got mad with post I repsonded to.

Yes, he was the one who appeared to get mad. You are walking and talking in the Spirit.:)

my dad used 'light cussing'. not frequently, never with any heat, or in anger, and never outside family or a circle of close friends.
he used self control in that way to be sure he didn't cause offense to anyone who didn't know him well.
to dad, those words were adjectives, as you would say a ball is red.

you'd be hard pressed to meet a man who gave of himself without words or a big to-do like dad did, though, even to people who had been unkind to him. he lived the life, and his life was a witness to onlookers.

i've known folks who speak, without cussing, in such a way that's a whole lot more damaging. perhaps we ought to delve deeper into why we do what we do, and what's the heart producing the words than the words themselves.

Do Mormons believe drinking coffee is a sin? I've heard Mormons say the "Word of Wisdom" cautions to avoid hot drinks, including coffee.

My goodness.... when I read some of the more puritanical responses on this thread, I can actually hear this in the background....
[SUP] [/SUP] [SUP]11 [/SUP]The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. [SUP]12 [/SUP]I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ [SUP]13 [/SUP]But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be [SUP][f][/SUP]merciful to me, the sinner!’ [SUP]14 [/SUP]I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
