That church actually had a dress code: Men must wear suits and women must wear long dresses. That church also had a school (Kindergarten - 12th grade) and the students had to sign an agreement that they would not go to the movies and if someone caught them at a movie theatre, they could be expelled. Women were also not allowed to pick up their child at school (actually walk into the school at that church) to pick up their child unless they were wearing a long dress.
sounds like the church and school I grew up in until the 9th grade

All unrighteousness is sin... 1 John 5:17. Smoking is destructive to the temple of God. Equally, those who smoke have pleasure in the destruction of God's temple. Is that righteousness? No it's not. Smoking is a sin.

I just want to say one thing concerning Stephens posts. The sin that is actually behind gluttony and all the other actions of flesh is just lust.

I know it is very offensive to those who are out of control. Nevertheless...it's true.

Not pointing fingers..I know no one here. And I have my own demons to deal with just as we all do.

Thank you BillG at one time I would never post this.

Don't we all go through these things? We want to be righteous but end up self righteous.

We all do go though things and struggle with issues, most are too frightened to admit it for fear off being put down.
Quite sad really. With us all being in the same family we should build each other up in love and with Godly counsel.

Maybe because it doesn't happen is one of reasons we battle on our own.

I'm afraid walking in the Spirit is more than that.

For example, Satan can act humble, be very moral, & give you the shirt off his back to impress you. He has a counterfeit for nearly everything God has & does.

Knowing that someone is walking in the Spirit can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit. Simple actions wont do.:)
hmmmm..... seems I remember "by their fruits you will know them..." or something to that effect.... doesn't say anything about the Spirit telling you.... just "by their fruits".....

What verse states verbatim that it is.....

Know YE (plural) that YOU (singular) are a temple of God.........He is speaking of them collectively when they come together in assembly capacity worship...Peter speaks to this as well...WHEN each INDIVIDUAL living stone comes together to make up a LIVING TEMPLE for GOD to comes down in their midst COLLECTIVELY.....

11th Commandment--->Thou shalt not smoke
12th Commandment--->Thou shalt not drink
13th Commandment-->Thou shalt not pass gas in church
14th Commandment-->Thou shalt not ____________ fill in the blank

There's never going to be a time when our wrestling is over while on earth. Otherwise, we have stopped being dependent on the Lord, and have become self sufficient or self righteous.

And we fall asleep.

The scripture?

~Bear One Another's Burdens
Gal 6:1 Brothers, if a person is caught doing something wrong, those of you who are spiritual should restore that person gently. Watch out for yourself so that you are not tempted as well.

Gal 6:2 Practice carrying each other's burdens. In this way you will fulfill the law of the Messiah.

Gal 6:3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is really nothing, he is only fooling himself.

The fruit of Holy Spirit will blossom then. For it's His fruit within, not of our own. Flesh has nothing good.

I think you guys are awesome here. Not all understand.

I don't get this flesh bit.
When Paul talks about it in Romans 7.

I have spent many many hours reading, researching from birth sides and I still don't get it.

Romans 7:17-20
17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

It really does my head in.

Adding things to the word of God is not wise....Kinda reminds me of the Pharisees...
[h=1]Matthew 23:4[/h]
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

If God convicts me of doing something whether it is in the Bible or not...then I need to quit doing it.

But if it's not covered by scripture then I don't need to go around condemning anyone else of it...And really I shouldn't be going around condemning folks anyhow...It ain't my place to do so.

Who am I to judge another man's servant? It's to God whether he stands or not, and God is able to make him stand.

So I think it is good to try and encourage others not add to the scripture and condemn others and go around throwing stumbling blocks in their way.

Someone else mentioned the passage that states we should bear one another's burdens. To me, that means we should try and help them up and not add so much non-sense on them that we are just more or less kicking 'em down....

To me it seems simple Bill.....Jesus speaks to the issue when he said the SPIRIT is indeed willing, but the flesh is WEAK.....

we have a born again spirit that does not sin, born of incorruptible seed that is eternally saved, sealed sanctified in Christ and justified before God which is still bound in a dead body of sin that is contrary to God, not subject unto God or the word of GOD....The spirit is always willing and seeking to do that which is right and biblical while the flesh is weak and seeks to do those things that are contrary to the truth....the battle Ground is the mind.....the mind needs to be renewed daily and transformed (Romans 12) which in turn allows us to overcome the body of sin easier.....when we fail and sin it is sin that dwells in our fallen body, when we overcome it is the Spirit that is in us.......

There seems to be numerous scriptures found throughout the bible and examples of this line of thought....we will be in this weak body of sin that fails until the day we die or are changed in the resurrection/change A.K.A. rapture so-called

"To me it seems simple"

Fancy a brain swop?

Now one thing that sticks out from you response "Battle ground is the mind"
Does Paul talk about that in Romans 7? I know it's mentioned elsewhere.

What I don't get is if as you say and which I agree with my born again spirit does not want to sin, yet I sin.
So when i sin who/what is sinning?

Now what I think confuses it even more

Romans 7:18
18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

Romans 7:18
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

I do know that the flesh is 'sarx' which if I understand correctly is basically flesh and not our nature.
I think of nature as being emotions/soul/spirit.

So what is residing in my flesh? Yes it is sin but if I have a new nature which is off Jesus why do I still sin?

Forget the brain swop I'm sure you wouldn't want mine and to live in my little world:cool:

I think scripture is pretty plain when it states that the only sin against your body (the temple) is sexual immorality.... there apparently is no other physical action relating to our bodies that is considered a "sin" against the body.

1 Corinthians 6

[SUP]12 [/SUP]All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. [SUP]13 [/SUP]Food is for the [SUP][g][/SUP]stomach and the [SUP][h][/SUP]stomach is for food, but God will do away with both [SUP][i][/SUP]of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. [SUP]14 [/SUP]Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power. [SUP]15 [/SUP]Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! [SUP]16 [/SUP]Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” [SUP]17 [/SUP]But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. [SUP]18 [/SUP]Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the [SUP][j][/SUP]immoral man sins against his own body.[SUP]19 [/SUP]Or do you not know that your body is a [SUP][k][/SUP]temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from [SUP][l][/SUP]God, and that you are not your own? [SUP]20 [/SUP]For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

the human nature with it's frailties both physical and morally and it's passions.

The nature of sin. Human. :) Help or not?

Sin begins in the mind. If we sin we are still acting carnally. According to our nature of sin. To do the opposite, we draw on the Word of God, (the renewed mind) and the Spirit of God, and declare death to our human nature.

And sometimes its a daily struggle for a particular sin. The scriptures declare us overcomers by the blood of the Lamb...all sin has been forgiven for all the world...and in particular for us who have received His forgiveness, so we are freed from condemnation...and the Word of Testimony. What Jesus has done for us through the Cross. Death to our ego...pierced through with Light, or the innocence found in our Saviour, and power of Holy Spirit to live victoriously. Dunamis!

Here is where the gifts become valuable to us. Not trying to argue them...just trying to help.
