Is Jesus our rest according to Scripture?

First we have to understand what it means to rest.

God worked for 6 days and on the 7th He rested. This was the institution of the Sabbath, so its where we must start.

God rested on the 7th day not because He was tired, He's omnipotent, His rest was to CEASE from His labors.

Jesus is the rest of God. He allows us to cease from our labors.

Jesus says this about Himself,

Matt 11:28Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

In Christ we no longer need to labor, we find rest for our souls.

In regards to the Sabbath, we don't serve the Sabbath.

The Sabbath was given to serve us. Man was not made for it, it was made for man. It was a sign of Christ to come. It pointed to a time when we could enter into the rest of God.

Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath and now WE are in Christ. If we have passed from death to life.

First lets deal with the argument that there is a rest coming, but we can't enter into it now.

This is completely false.

Let's look at the chapter written about the Sabbath.

Hebrews 4:1Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

The author of Hebrews is clearly telling us there IS a promise of rest. Please notice this is written to Hebrews, this is the people who the Law was given to through Moses. So it's time for them to move into the promise of rest.

And if they haven't yet entered in? They should be afraid because they had FAILED to reach it. If rest wasn't available to us NOW in Christ and was some sort of promise we enter into later, we wouldn't need to fear not reaching it now.

So how do we enter that rest?
3For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,
“As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest,’”
although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”

It is through BELIEF in Christ that we enter to the rest of God. And what is the rest of God? Ceasing from our own works, as God ceased from His works from the foundation of the world. This was when the Sabbath was instituted.

So we see clearly in Hebrews 4:1-4
- There is a promise of rest.
- We must enter in now.
- We enter in through belief in Christ.
- This rest was the SAME rest that God was speaking of in regards to the 7th day.

9So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

So here's the thing, people who think they are keeping the Sabbath according to the OT falter at this point. This Scripture tells us those who kept the Sabbath perfect, had failed to enter into God's rest, and there still remained a Sabbath rest for them.

Why? Because the refused to cease from their own labors.

And to those who so desire to be obedient to God. And teach on it continuously, this Scripture is for you.

What is disobedience in Scripture? It is refusing to believe Christ is the ceasing from your own labors.

11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

There is only ONE Sabbath for God's people and that is belief in Christ. No other Sabbath remains.

Since sin is breaking the law why do you ask that question.
Yes to sinning is yes to breaking the law!!!
Where is the difference in your mind?!?
sin is breaking the law / commands . it is also falling short of a standard, missing the mark, knowing to do good and not doing so. if you care about actual definitions, not just opinions.

No, because it is not speaking of reverting to the OT Law, or adding it to the Gospel as legalists would do. :D
i'm glad you pointed that out. the lawyers quote 1st John verbatim about command keeping, but always fail to mention that the commands John is referring to are believe in the name of the Son and love one another. ( chapter 3 ).

Jesus said the law in the Torah would be in effect until heaven and earth disappear.

Matthew 5:13 to 20 NIV
Jesus saying he came to fulfill the law and the prophets.

Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Also sin is breaking the law.
We admit we sin so we break the law in the Torah.
To know what the law is here is a list of them and a discussion about them.

would you consider this legalism? Revelation 14:12-13, ... and their works follow with them.”
Do you interpret works as keeping OT Law? It appears you conflate the two.

JUST a simple HONEST to GOODNESS....I BREAK THE LAW and then to come down off your high horse and incessant law pushing drivel and be honest with the reason the law was given and that NO AMOUNT of law keeping with justify a man before GOD!

AMEN....I had a discussion with a 7th day Waiter today.....of course I am of the devil because I do not go to church on Saturday and I do not keep the Sabbath etc....I then heard a story about a Pentecostal preacher from my home town who went to the river and was calling all the drunk Canoeists over to baptize them because they were already wet and baptism would save them.......all in the space of 30 minutes in Steak and Shake in Sullivan, Missouri......

WOW.................is all I will say....

What is breaking the Law? Sin?

YES.

I said yes I have sinned and probably will in the future. I do not want to sin, which is breaking His Law.

none of this changes His word, His Law, His will.

I could be the most sinful person that ever lived, this would still be true:

1 Yahanan /John 2:3-7, “And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands. The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Yah has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked. Beloved, I write no fresh command to you, but an old command which you have had from the beginning. The old command is the Word which you heard from the beginning.”

John 5:28-30, “Do not be astonished at this-for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice, and will come forth. Those who have practiced righteousness will be resurrected in order to live; and those who have practiced wickedness will be resurrected in order to be damned.”

(Lev 19:18) On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Daniyl 7:25, "And he will speak great words against YHWH, and will wear out; mentally attack to cause to fall away, the saints of YHWH, and think to change times and Laws

Mat 5:18, "I say to you; Unless heaven and earth passes away, one yodh; the smallest of the letters will in no way pass from the Law, until all things are perfected."

Revelation 21:1, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away."

Mat 12:12, "And how much more valuable is a man than a sheep? Therefore, it is Lawful to do righteousness on the Sabbath."

Matt 11:27-30, "All things have been delivered to Me by My Father. And no one fully knows the Son except the Father, neither does anyone fully know the Father, except the Son and those whom YHWH wills the Son to reveal. Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light"

“you who are afflictedrest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers”

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, “Clear evidence of the righteous judgment of יהוה, in order for you to be counted worthy of the reign of יהוה, for which you also suffer, since יהוה shall rightly repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give you who are afflictedrest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know יהוה, and on those who do not obey the Good News of our Master יהושע Messiah, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Master and from the esteem of His strength, when He comes to be esteemed in His set-apart ones and to be admired among all those who believe in that Day, because our witness to you was believed.”

Revelation 14:13, "And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me: Write: Blessed are the dead, the ones dying in the Messiah from now on! Yes, says the Spirit: because they will rest from their labors, and their works do follow them!"

Hebrews 4:1-11, "Therefore, since a promise of entering His rest remains, let us fear so that none of you should come short of it. For this message was preached to us, as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not benefit them, because they did not share in the faith of those who obeyed-- However, we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: So I vowed in My wrath, They will not enter into My rest, although the works were finished from the foundation of the world, For He spoke in a certain place of the Seventh Day, in this way: And YHWH rested the Seventh Day from all His works. And in this place again: If they will enter into My rest. Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, Again, He designates a certain day, saying in David: ''Today,'' after so long a time, as it has been said: Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts. If Yahshua (ben Nun) had given them rest he would not have spoken afterward of another day. Therefore, there remains the keeping of the Sabbath (word G#4520) to the people of YHWH, For he who has entered into His rest (word G#2663) has also ceased from his own works, as YHWH did from His. Therefore, let us be zealous to enter into that rest (word G#2663), so that no one may fall after the same example of unbelief."

Are you of the Hebrew Roots movement as well?

I have posted this before. I am Reformed/Calvinist in my beliefs. I think for myself and have a couple minor disagreements with them. The issue is the Apostles Creed defines what a Christian must believe. Everything else is agree to disagree. The Creed was created in the early church because almost from the beginning there were difference of opinions about issues in the Bible. Today we see this with the different Bible believing denominations. Unfortunately the 7 sisters are secular today. Presbyterian USA was taken over in 1932 as documented by Gary North in Crossed Fingers. My guess is that even though almost 50% of the population goes to church less than 25% are Christians. Too many secular ministers. I met a man who was a life long Lutheran after a special invitational service when the refreshments were served.. He was shocked to hear the gospel for the first time.

Each major denomination has sub denominations that are Bible believing. For example Presbyterian PCA and Lutheran Missouri Synod.

Now let's address the Law a bit.

First off the Law was given to Moses. And through Moses it was given to the children of Israel.

Romans 9:3For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, 4the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. 5Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised!

So in Romans 9 we see the following progression.
- Paul who was an Israelite is very upset that they are not entering in to what was promised.
- The same people for whom the Law was given.

So the Law was given to Moses and it became a sign to the PEOPLE of Israel.

But what about the Gentiles?

Romans 2:14For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

The Gentiles were NEVER given the Law. That means if you're reading this, you were never given the Law. It was never for you. It was for the Israelites to point them to Christ.

This doesn't mean that Gentiles don't need Christ as Paul addresses next:

15They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

For the Gentiles (that's us), without Christ, we are held accountable to the law written on our heart, our own conscience. And those thoughts will either accuse or excuse us by Christ on the day of judgment. So yes, the Gentiles DO need Christ.

17But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 18and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law

Paul goes on to explain to the Jews that KNOWING the Law isn't enough. Because even though they know what is excellent, they still need Christ because their behavior shows they don't follow the Law themselves.

23You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

So you see the Law was given to the Israelites through Moses so that the Gentiles would KNOW God.

And then Paul explains that even though only the Jews were given the Law and the Gentiles were not, there was still a lot of benefit to being a Jew.

1Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

So hopefully we can clearly see that the Law, yes the 10 commandments, the ORACLES of God, were not for the Gentiles.

But that doesn't mean that the Jews didn't need Christ, because when you know the Law, you become UNDER the Law. And being under the Law means you are held accountable to it, fully.

20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

So we see here the Law wasn't given for people to know what to DO, it was given to know that they needed a Savior.

And this is the stumbling block.

If you think the Law was given for you to do, you'll stumble.

Because RIGHTEOUSNESS comes APART from the Law. Let that really sink in.

21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

So if righteousness comes by faith, does faith then overthrow the law?

31Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

What does it mean to uphold the Law? Here's what I believe this means, when we are set free of the law's demands through faith, we are free to love one another. And by loving one another we establish the law.

But, we have to get off this continual cycle of thinking we need to please God, and measure up, and do all these things apart from
faith. But when we enter in to His rest through faith, we live by faith, and THIS pleases Him.

And now that we are free, we can use our freedom to love one another.

Galatians 5:
13For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

But until we are ourselves are set free, we will not love each other freely. Because we ourselves are not free, so nothing we do is out of freedom. If we are bound and still trying to perform, what reward is there in our actions? But Christ has came to set us free. Let us then rejoice in our freedom and serve the Body of Christ through love.

When someone answers me like this, and doesn't show they read a single thing I wrote. I no longer continue the topic because usually that person is unwilling to see things differently. I enjoyed the discourse though and I too hope that one day God shows you what righteousness apart from the law looks like.

Like I said....you tap dance all around without actually saying that you break the law........

YES or NO.....Do you KEEP the LAW?
Greetings Professor Decon; open forum so I will cast my vote; "No" I do not keep the law because the bible tells me that if I try to "keep the whole law" yet I stumble in one point, it is the same as breaking all of it. Does that mean we can go on transgressing the law? God forbid.

Point:
All of this biblical knowledge about; God and Sin and Grace and Mercy and the Holy Spirit, should have been covered in every Christians Sunday School Classes.

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All: Hebrews10:15-17

15)
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16) "This is the covenant I will make with them

after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds."

17)
Then he adds:
"Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more."

Dead to sin, Alive in Christ; Slaves to Righteousness: Romans6:14-16

14) For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
15) What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? By no means!
16) Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?…

Favoritism Forbiden: James2:8-11
8) If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.
9) But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.
10) For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
11) For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

Please "Law Keeper" stop trying to, "Save Yourself"

God bless!

ohh seems you cut out some of my post ....
Yeah I did and freely admit it....was only addressing the statement you made....tragic that you cannot admit the simple truth that you are a law breaker...."present tense" and that you will ALWAYS be a law breaker in the flesh
