Do you have a 'grandma' story? :)
I think a grandparent can be a great window into understanding our singleness, God can use them greatly....

Grandma and me had fun in 1990, I'd just graduated from college, and, thanks to mom's suggestion, and, gram's, was a few hours from college the opposite direction of our place, I went.....

I didn't think it would be all that fun at grandma's in Montana, but went I did and just driving there was nice and cool, just thinking about no more school and flying at 80mph in my Datsun pick up :D

At grandmas, I played word games like Scrabble, Probe, and,.our favorite, Boggle. :) I won some times and gram won some times. Gram taught me things too, like cooking. She showec me her special soup my sister and I ate growing up. 'Rutebaga,!-', the secret was rutebaga ! H-h, not really, or, really, beither way , when I would leave gram's a week later, I told mom to put rutebaga in her vegetable soup, which all thru the year's of mom duplicating gram's soup trying couldn't dupe it, not even close. :( I loved grandma's soup, and, here I WA now by myself there and no sister or parents to contend with so I got to eat it all. And, I kid you nada, I ate like 5-6 bowls a day, lunch and dinner.and NEVER got tired of it : Gram showed me how she made spaghetti too. She made a homemade sauce and she had a secret ingredient for it too. She folded in cheese after it started to boil. Cheese !

So,ok, that was then, ,and, what a joy being with grandma that week turned out to be !
Now, fast forward to 1994 and grandma has been slowly getting worse with her emphysema and can't take care of herself so mom takes her in. this is the coolest, I go over to mom's often during day when mom, a RN, is working, and play Scrabble, Probe, and, you guessed it, Boggle. Gram was pretty even with me,at first, ad we played a lot in 1995, and, in fact, gram startec winning all the time the last six months '95 and I quit playing with her because of working more now but also I quit playing as much cuz it wasn't fun getting whooped by grandma!
In 1996, early months, gram was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, and, she could still in this state whoop me that time. But within middle of '96 gram was getting worse and, worse and I was not around much July to November. I just, I guess, at 26, years old now, didn't take seeing gram in this debillitated state well. In november , like the 30th, mom said that I needed to go over because grandma was about to die....

I went and walked into gram's room, she started to move away from me in her bed, cringing. I went over to hug her frail body and told her I loved her and I can't remember exactly what I said but it was like , 'God is with you, grandma,' (grandma grew up catholic but quit practicing after my grandpa died back in 1971). I looked at grandma then, stilll not letting go of her, and, tears began to flow from her eyes. I am not sure what I said then but I left mom's house shortly after that, I think I was working Dominos that night and stopped on my evening 'lunch half-hour break. '
Grandma died that night.

God is with us, miladies and notmydudes :) And, I know God worked through that situation a miracle in grandma. I think grandma began to cry because I hadn't seen her much in month, or,two, leading up to her death. I was just doing best I could in life, but this whole Lou Gehrig's was tough on me. But, I am thankful to God for the good times I had of after college with gram that special week and then at mom's. Grandma and me :)

Yea, but mind is about grandpa, and isn't spiritual, just a bit gross. I remember, every time we visited him when I was a teenager; just before we would eat dinner; he would take a fly swatter and hit everybody plate but his own, don't know why but I would lose my appettite.

I'm assuming your grandpa was senile?

Beloved my grandma, as Loe Gehrig's progressed through her body lost complete 'motor control,' and, this included deterioration of her organs, like voice deteriorated, and really, her ability to live as a human. mom was an RN, retired now, took care of her well but gram's last days I remember mom saying gram could not control her own bowels. The power of God is so loving though and I never saw gram mention God in life, I'm not sure what happened but when I saw her the last time I think she saw God, as tears went down her face. I am not saying what I said for anything more than to help others, as, if you are young now reading this, see, see, SEE, that the time you spendvwith your grandma (grandpa, too) is precious. I am so thankful for my gram given. Thank you, Jesus :)

I was born as a US citizen out of the country, and growing up (in the US) my grandma told me I really had two birthdays (because of the date difference) so every year on the day before my actual birthday we would do something special and I would get my present then.
My Grandma is in Heaven but I will always remember my "first" birthday and think of her.

This thread reminded me of this youtube video. Which you might think is hilarious....

JULIAN SMITH - Grandma Like Whoa - YouTube
Might think ;)

No, but, yeah, hey, it's good creativity, nothing wrong with that , God bless ya, bloodredbird, and, I hope you have had some remembering memories of your Grandma and you. Treasure them, God will use them, in some way, as an outpouring of goodness to others , from your soul.
From watching grandma cook when way back in 1990, I have cooked a lot now last few years, and, I always cook for mom on mother's day and I bet gram had something to do with both the confidence of my outpouring doing that for mom on her day and myself when cooking all I cook up on my own through the years. Blending cheese into spaghetti sauce was fascinating to me and that principle is used by me in my making soups now, and, sauces. :)

You're story is such a blessing and so extremely sweet. Thank you for sharing, it's a wonderful reminder to take advantage of the time we have with those around us, especially those close to us. For some reason that seems to be the theme of things the Lord is showing me recently. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with grandma and you were obviously truly special to her. :)

You encouraged me to call my grandmother and I'm going to stay the night with her and my great grandmother :) It will indeed be a special time. Thanks!

My grandfather had diabetes and really bad psoriasis, so when we would sit down to eat dinner, he would start scratching and itching and all these flakes would be fallin off all over the place... then he'd start injecting himself with all these different medicines to help stop him from scratching....

my grandfather was a winner

Nods, there must be a happy story of you and grandpa :)
Your grandpa just dealing with things of oldness, milady, that kind of 'skin condition' i think, can be fairly normal for older folk.
What do you mean by 'my grandpa was a real winner,' ?

i wish i had a grandmother :( that would had been nice
Awwwwwwwww, lizzytheone. Sorry. , God must have had someone of relative of good memory things done for fun, learning. and they taught you good experience like how to cook great tamales, milady, or, something cool, like you two went shopping for ponchos together. :) or maybe a pet cucharacha :D

Im a grandma and my granddaughter says the funniest things.
When she was 4 years old and she wanted to tell me something that happened a while ago she would say " Grandma , when I was little....um you still are girl!
One hot summer night my grandkids and I slept in the living room because only the first floor of the house had air conditioning. Renette says grandma Gage is keeping me awake and I cant get my beauty sleep. Really? A 4 year old needs beauty sleep?
She is now 7. Renette was with my 2 sisters and one of them had a t shirt on that read" I cant figure out if Im the evil sister or not" Renette, read the shirt so one of my sisters asked her" whos the evil sister?" She knew she was being put on the spot so she said Grandma Cathy!

No he was more of crazy like a fox, but definitely not senile. More of ornary. That is on my mom side, although my Grandma on her side was very kind to all of us as kids and teenagers. My other Grandma, was definitely hopefully a little senile, or just very cruel, what she tried to do to me, when I was 5, makes this fly swatter on a plate look like a blessing from God. Let just say if my dad wasn't their one night at dinner with her, I wouldn't have a left hand.

Ok??

To me, that's just plain strange, but if grandpa hitting your dinner plates before you eat with fly swatter with fly guts on it (assuming) is just grandpa crazy like a fox to you then it is what it is. To me, I see that differently, the antics of that, in my most polite description, beloved, is gross. And, wondering too if you were only one who lost their, appetite, because I too would not eat off a plate smacked with the family fly swatter.

Your story is sweet Mr. Green.:) It made me smile and remember my grandpa, which made me smile again. I have 2 grandpas and one grandma, but due to some family drama , I'm closer to my mom's dad (and mom) than to my dad's dad.I was almost co-raised by my grandparents, since I would go to their house very often. My grandpa is really a peculiar man. Years ago, when he still could walk and talk and do everything on his own, he ran a small grocery shop with my grandma. They used to sell water bottles, and he used to drink the bottles, wash them in his house and then refill them with his own water. I dont think the customers knew that of course.
I remember that my cousin who lived there, my brother and I would take chips from the grocery at night (it was inside of the house) and come back and eat the chips under the bed sheets and then pretend we were asleep when we heard my grandma or grandpa steps. My grandpa caught us sometimes, so everytime we spent the night there, he would wake up in the middle of the night, go check on us and point a flashlight to our faces and ask '' are you asleep!?'' (even if we were, we wouldn't after gettin a flashlight pointed at our faces). He had the custom of sleeping outside of his bedroom in a cot, even thought he had a bed inside of his room. When I was little I thought this was cool, and sometimes he would let me sleep there :), now that I think about it, I think he did this because he was hot inside of the room and he didn't have an AC.

He would sit outside of the house, as my grandparents would do every afternoon to chat with the neighbors, and everytime a ''crazy person'' ( for him this means anyone with a tatoo, a weird hairdo, a weird hair color, or weird or ugly clothes) passed by he would insult them on his faces literally. He would say comments like ''mira al loco ese!''(which means look at that looney there!'') or ''mira al cholo ese!'' (look at that cholo!) in an extremely LOUD voice and we would always tell him ''grandpa! he/she can hear you!'' haha not that he cared though . He would also insult every guy who dared visit my cousin who lived with my grandparents. He would say she wasn't there or just tell them to get lost. It was extremely awkward back then now I just think it's funny.

There are many stories about him, and also my dear grandma which used to nag me about not eating and now is the other way around. My grandma has gotten some habits in the last years, but she is still all there thankfully. My grandpa can barely remember my name now, and we think he won't be here with us for a long time, but God knows... I love him so much and I appreciate all the memories I have and all the moments I still have with him. Thanks for this thread Mr. Green :).

Lol, kayM to you and your brother sneaking chips. You do know that commandment, thou shalt not steal, you know :D. JK. Yeah, you're grandpa sounds like a interesting man, not afraid to tell people what he thinks of them. Hey, Jesus was like that, too, wasn't He ? He often told pharasees what he thought of their hypocrasy and false sincerity in their faith of Christ (works based).

Thanks for sharing, kayM, yes, grandpa and grandma are folk we should learn from and, if they not know Christ, they should Tim from us, too the Lord leads , milady :)
