Everyone here is talking about 70's or 90's music or something idk while I'm just sitting here, listening to things like:

I didn't know that I was that much of an outsider here...

I was laughing at you young folk when I read this! But as the thread went on, I realized I had not listed to commercial music since early 1980. That is when I got saved, and needed to walk away from the whole: My boyfriend's back/This is the End/Wooden Ships!

That was helped by moving to northern BC, where all we had was CBC, cranking out the classical hits, and alternative music. Yes, even then, alternative music was weird.

So, unless my kids played it in the 90's, I literally don't know any songs after 1980. But pretty much every song from about 1964 on. Although some of the American songs were not played in Canada, so I don't know them. We tried to keep up with current songs, in our band, but some groups sound good, but they are not worth singing or playing. Fleetwood Mac comes to mind.

So, my song for people to figure out is (from memory) (It had a cameo appearance on this thread, much earlier!)

There's a lady who sure all that glitters is gold,
And she's buying a _________________________

Some of you younger people might not understand what is meant by the mention of "Bubble Gum" music. Here is the idea.

Back to the 80's.

And I meant
Every word I said
When I said that I loved you I meant that I loved you forever
And I'm gonna ______________?

This is what I was talking about! I was one of those young teens buying records when these songs were out. Although other than the Monkees, who were more of a produced television craze, I did not buy one of those records. In fact, I got so sick of bubblegum music, I would either turn to the "other" top forty station or turn the radio off if these songs were playing. (No Iphone tunes or playlists in those days!)

But I did not recognize some of the groups or music. I knew every top 40 song, but only the ones that made it in Canada. I wonder what rhyme or reason there was for some of those songs making it big, and yet other songs by the same artists not even getting radio play in Canada? Obviously, there was a conspiracy! LOL

And don't forget, alternative music like acid rock was creeping onto the air waves during the 60's. So bubblegum music was played back to back with Jimmie Hendrix' Purple Haze, or the Doors instructions to Light My Fire. Although I never heard Frank Zappa, for example, played on commercial radio! A little too alternative?

I spent the summer of 1971 on the beach in the west coast of Vancouver Island with a transistor radio and a lot of batteries. I won't say what I was also doing. But because of a mountain range, I could not get the Vancouver or Victoria am radio stations (This, dear children, was before fm, with much better sound, quality took over music) But for some reason, I could get LA stations, probably a bounce across the ocean as LA was thousands of miles away. But mostly I was searching for psychedelic music in those days, and bubblegum was hopefully dead and buried! But I was greatful for the strange way am radio was transmitted!

So here is my next song!

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all

Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall...

That was the first song I ever sang at karaoke :D I had walked around for hours with the request slip in my hand before someone grabbed it from me to put it in the queue. When my name was eventually called and I sang the song... I was instantly hooked :)
