Whole Grains

The right kinds of carbs are actually good for you. Choose whole grains — their fiber keeps you from getting hungry.

Watch out: Sometimes bread labeled "wheat" has been stripped of all of its fiber and nutrients. Look for "whole grain" or "100 percent whole wheat."

Green Vegetables

If their vitamins and minerals don't persuade you, maybe their waist-whittling powers will do the trick. Veggies like spinach and broccoli are loaded with fiber and very few calories. Have a salad before a meal and you'll be satisfied with smaller portions later.

Watch out: Iceberg lettuce has almost no fiber. Fill your bowl with romaine, arugula, or spinach instead.

Peanut Butter

Who would have guessed that a kid-friendly food could be waist-friendly, too? PB is packed with niacin, which keeps the digestive system on track and prevents belly bloat. Just keep an eye on portion size: Peanut butter does have a lot of fat, so limit yourself to no more than two tablespoons a day.

Watch out: Pick all-natural PB, which doesn't contain added sugar.

Dairy

There's a reason the woman in the yogurt commercial fits into her bikini: Calcium helps break down fat and may even prevent it from forming!

Watch out: Always pick low-fat or fat-free dairy over the full-fat versions.

Avocados

In addition to containing lots of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, avocados are a terrific source of filling fiber (11 to 17 grams per avocado!), making them a great food for staving off hunger, says Bowden.

Scarf down: Half a cup daily

Iced tea

"Tea, especially green tea, is rich in antioxidants that have been proven to speed metabolism," explains Mark Ukra, author of The Ultimate Tea Diet.

In fact, according to Swiss researchers, tea-drinking subjects burn a whopping 266 more calories per day than those who abstain.

For consummate calorie-torching, skip bottled teas — processing has depleted them of slimming nutrients. Instead, steep a tea bag in one cup of hot water for two minutes, then cool with ice cubes. Enjoy four cups daily.

Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

This low-cal, calcium-rich treat activates the body's fat-burning hormones, say University of Wisconsin researchers. "Plus, because of its high protein content — it contains more than any other dairy product — you'll stay full longer," notes Dr. La Puma.

His slimming Rx: "Grate one ounce on soups or salads daily."

Cannellini beans

When it comes to resistant starch, a unique fiber that resists digestion, these legumes lead the pack.

Good news for you, because slower digestion means your body has to work harder — that is, burn more calories — in order to process your meal, explains Janine Higgins, Ph.D., lead author of a University of Colorado study on weight loss.

Battle the bulge with a half-cup daily.

Body fat you have met your match:)

Anyway I have set myself a goal of losing 28 pounds which would take me to 140 pounds,

even when I was 120 pounds I didn't look skinny as I was born with Marilyn Munroe curves!
I'm not sure if that is good or bad, lol.

I was wondering if maybe others would be interested in losing weight, we could
encourage each other, prayer for each other, share healthy low fat recipes etc and
cheer each other on.

I want to do this in a healthy way, no fad diets etc. So maybe if you have any experience
in nutrition than you could join the group and help us all out a bit as well.

So, is anyone interested if I can work out how to set it up?

Hi Jeff thanks for the advice I'm sure you mean well but I would rather take the advice of my doctor.

When blood calcium levels fall too low the symptoms can be rather unpleasant (I have experienced several of them
including that I am now at the very early stages of developing cataracts) and at their worse can lead to arrhythmia and in
rare cases can cause fits.

It isn't a dietary problem it is a rare hormonal deficiency whereby the body can no longer regulate its blood calcium and
phosphate levels. It is something that I have started praying about again as I do believe Jesus can heal me :)

The following long provides more info.

Yeah but can you:-

Get up
Make breakfast
Do the dishes
Start the laundry
Pick up elderly person's pension
Finish the laundry
Change the beds
Make lunch
Do the dishes
Spend 3 hours in the garden mowing the lawn, weeding, sweeping up, strimming the lawn
Pick up elderly person's prescription
Make dinner
Do the dishes
Sort out paperwork
all while posting on CC and making numerous cups of coffee for elderly person.

Phew can't wait to go to work tomorrow I need the rest! :)
I can and do do all that (except the care for an elderly person and we don't 'make breakfast' here, we just get it ourselves), plus I have a (part time) job. Being busy in itself isn't an excuse not to lose weight, actually the things I described give me more energy to do the things I have to do.

Hi I have set up the group if folks want to join and we can all encourage each other to lose weight in
a healthy way - absolutely no fresh air diets allowed. :)

Its called, live, lose weight, laugh, love your body.

Blain it would be good to have you along as you are a great encourager. The group posts only seem to allow for
a maximum of 1000 characters so any tips you provide would need to be cut short or spread out over a few posts etc.

Really it's for ladies and gents who want to lose weight and give/receive encouragement to other.

However if any one else wants to join to provide encouragement and/or nutritional information etc or if you have
expertise in this area and wish to help, then it would be good to see you.

However please do not join just to brag about how fit and healthy you are and how perfect your weight is.
The group has been set up for a specific reason and if it does not apply to you then I am sure there will
be other groups you can join instead which are more relevant to your needs

Thank you for understanding. :)

LOL I cant help but laugh at how different and the same God makes us. You weigh now less than I'll ever weigh again. LOL

I just hit a major mini-goal a few weeks ago. 199 pounds! Yippee!! The first time in over a decade I can say my weight without the first number being a 2! That scale at the doctor's office? I no longer have to stick the fat weight on the 200 mark, so the nurse doesn't fiddle with the 150-199 range, before blushing and moving it up one. And my shoes were on!!!

Last May my doctor told me I had diabetes so I had to lose weight and give up smoking. (I weighed 224 then, so that 199 was a milestone in more than one way.) Well, one out of two ain't bad, but I will always have diabetes. I gave up sugar (most of the time) then. An easy 15 pounds. (Not so easy. I love all things sugary.) It got a little harder then, plus I have several health conditions that stop me from being as active as I should, plus a bad set of teeth that kills too hot and too cold foods. (There goes cereal.) But, side effect. I can't think of anything easy to make that I like to eat, so I simply eat only to stop my stomach from growling until hubby makes a 5 star dinner. (He has diabetes and high-blood pressure, so it's also always healthy too.) Another 10 pounds.

But, yo? (Yo is to Philly what Aloha is to Hawaii, so you have to figure out meaning from context. lol) Isn't this already group support? How organize were you panning on making this?

(And excuse me if I don't get back soon. Hubby is making dinner, and I now smell it, so...yummy! Got to go. lol)

Actually a little birdie told me that when on a diet it can be beneficial to have a meal of whatever you want every 3 weeks to
get rid of all those cravings, then carry on. If I feel like trying that, this may just be in the menu:)

Bless yaWe are all different aren't we, come along and join in the fun, you know it makes no difference whether some peoplelose 1 pound a month or others lose several, at least it's all in the right direction. As for organised, a few weeks ago I jumped on the scales, thought eeeeek then began to physic myselfup to go on a diet. I thought it would be easier if I had someone to diet with so that's what got me thinking about a group on CC. Im no expert so it will be more like a group of folks encouraging each other, praying for each other, sharing ideas etc, spurring each other on etc.Life for me has been incredibly busy the last couple of years, as a carer for my aunt I have not been looking after myself properly either. God has been speaking to me about this and I feel it's time tochange how I do things. Being kinder to my body is one of the things I want to do. I'm sure God wants us to look after ourselves. :)
