Is...................

Doesn't matter about this site being international. If you write in English, it needs to be correct English.

Hi.

I have noticed that sometimes incorrect grammar can completely change the meaning of a post.
Also sometimes people can get a bit frustrated by incorrect grammar, but also different cultures and countries use
grammar in different ways.

So in the effort to, at least in part, satisfy my own mind on a certain matter, please can I have your
opinion as to which is correct:

The yolk of an egg IS white,
or the yolk of an egg ARE white.

Your answers would be greatly appreciated in the assistance of mutual understanding and world peace.

:)

Ps if you are a really bright spark with a degree in English then you might want to delay responding and give the
rest of us mere mortals a chance to reply first.

Sooooo. which is it folks, IS or ARE?
The yoke (singular) of an (singular) egg is white.

The committee (a collective noun as a unit of one) is going to vote.

IS is the word to use.

The yolk of an egg IS white.. that's the proper way to say it. :)

The word "Are" would be correct if you said the yolkS of an egg ARE white. Yolks indicates more than one egg..
Actually it indicates more than one yolk............and some eggs contain two yolks............ :) Not uncommon among free range eggs

Grammar police: the subject "yolks" is plural, so the verb would be the plural "are."

My first criminal justice class in college had a teacher that gave us this test on the very first day....How many would fall for this?
Now that I've been alerted, I passed.

Elin, re-read my quote above. What you said here is precisely what I said there. :) I wrote the word "yolkS," indicating more than one, and I also put "are" which is also correct. :)

I can't believe folks are still debating the colour of egg yolks, so funny.

people might want to read the first page of the thread, especially those who think egg yolks are white!

Uncle Willie I try my best but with Afrikaans being my first language it can be pretty darn confusing at times

No, actually didn't want to embarrass you by pointing out your mistake in the OP....... :) Rather, went with the concept of discussing proper grammar and ignoring that egg yolks are yellow instead of white. Sometimes we just don't want to point out an obvious mistake in the interest of Christian love and fellowship.

Maybe it is different in the UK ;)
