OPC #3! We're a good portion of the Reformed people on here. Which is unfortunate because I detest being in the majority :p

You can't go wrong with Beeke. Be sure to let people here know that every day isn't about predestination.

I like seeing all these new people showing up. Solid.

Yeah, I'm totally Calvinist :) OPC (Orthodox Presbyterian Church), to be precise. In fact, I am starting a devotional at the beginning of 2017, "365 days with Calvin" some writings of Calvin compiled into a devotional format by Joel R. Beeke. promises to be good!

Duly noted. Fun fact! The Puritans carried in Church.

In fact, there was a law in Massachusetts Bay that required men bring their guns to church in case there is an Indian attack. It's technically still on the books with arguable legal standing.
The reason a woman is on her husband's left arm, (primarily only seen in weddings these days), is so he can draw his sword with his right hand to defend her :)

Beeke is very solid. And (another huge one for me...the reason I couldn't get through John Owens) he's actually readable!

It's funny how many people I see posting here that I'm not at all surprised at!

I'm really surprised at the number of people jumping in here. I think non-Reformed Christians are more vocal than we are. Just jockeying around the forum myself, I assumed there are maybe one or two of us out there. Namely me and Depleted :p

Good on you for trying Owen! I have not read him yet, but even scholars say he is one of those dense writers you have to read several times to understand.

Beeke is more readable. So is Calvin by comparison. I do find that the English translation clanks a bit though.

Well, I'm stuffed then if I ever get married and we're ambushed during the wedding ceremony/reception by a dastardly fiend or two! I'm left-handed!

You've found the basis of the custom! Now you can insist that you must stand on the left and still be in perfect keeping with tradition.

I believe at the time it was considered bad luck to be left handed and left handers would either have been outcasts, or taught to be right handed. Sorry :p

Ohhhh yeah. Good catch.

Tintin, time to practice drawing your sabre with your right-hand. Maybe sling the sword around your back and draw it like a Scotsman.

Yes, I believe we were considered evil until the 1950s or so. Which is stupid superstition, not godly wisdom.

I should be alright. I remembered that, even though I'm left-handed, I would be able to hold a sword in my right hand. Left-handed feels weird. So I'll be fine after all.

This reminds me of that controversy in the gun culture- if your hand and eye are cross-dominant, do you shoot with your non-dominant hand?

I still don't know what I should officially do. :p

Isn't the OPC way more conservative than the PCUSA? My wife has a cousin that attends a Presbyterian church and when I asked her if they taught election and predestination, I was baffled. I guess they are PCUSA?

The PCUSA is for us Presbyterians what the ABA is for the Baptists. The PCA is like the SBC. The OPC's are like the official Reformed Baptist Churches.

The analogies are not perfect, but I hope they make sense. The PCUSA gives the rest of us a bad name. Ick.

If shotguns are present at a wedding, Tintin has done something he shouldn't have.
Perhaps you could ditch the swords and guns and go with lightsabres. That would be a much more entertaining wedding.

Ditching guns is heresy. I think the Arians popularized it.
