I used to be afraid of dark as child and my mom always told me to sing song about power of Jesus blood, don't know if its hymn, but I like it cause it amazingly helped me ....

Would you be free from the burden of sin?

There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;

Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.

Refrain:
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide;
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
R.
Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow.
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
R.
Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
Jones, 1899

I put together this video for another favorite hymn of mine - "I Need Thee Every Hour" written by Annie Hawks in 1872, performed here by the Celebration Choir and the Salvation Army Citadel Band.

"Here Is Love"

Words: William Rees, 1802-1883
Music: Robert Lowry, 1876

Here is love, vast as the ocean,
Loving-kindness as the flood,

When the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
Shed for us His precious blood.
Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten,
Throughout heav’n’s eternal days.

On the mount of crucifixion,

Fountains opened deep and wide;
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
Flowed a vast and gracious tide.
Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
Poured incessant from above,
And heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
Kissed a guilty world in love.

Let me, all Thy love accepting,

Love Thee, ever all my days;
Let me seek Thy kingdom only,
And my life be to Thy praise;
Thou alone shalt be my glory,
Nothing in the world I see;
Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me,
Thou Thyself hast set me free.

In Thy truth Thou dost direct me

By Thy Spirit through Thy Word;
And Thy grace my need is meeting,
As I trust in Thee, my Lord.
Of Thy fullness Thou art pouring
Thy great love and pow’r on me,
Without measure, full and boundless,
Drawing out my heart to Thee.

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." - I John 4:10

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." - John 3:16

Great hymn; sometimes sung to the Welsh tune Calon Lan.

Blessings.

Rock of Ages, I cry almost every time I hear it!
and Heyr Himna Smiður, sorry it's an Icelandic hymn. But it is my favorite, even used it in my wedding
:)

Listen, smith of the heavens,
what the poet asks.
May softly come unto me
thy mercy.
So I call on thee,
for thou hast created me.
I am thy slave,
thou art my Lord.

God, I call on thee
to heal me.
Remember me, mild one (or mild king).
Most we need thee.
Drive out, O king of suns,
generous and great,
every human sorrow
from the city of the heart.

Watch over me, mild one,
Most we need thee,
truly every moment
in the world of men.
send us, son of the virgin,
good causes,
all aid is from thee,
in my heart.

Excellent! :)

So how do you say: 'City of the Heart' from the lyrics, in Icelandic?

Do you understand any Faeroese as well? which also has a strong tradition of partly Lutheran-inspired hymnody.

Blessings.

'Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!' W W Walford

I am fussy about what people call hymns nowadays. I necer gave it any thought until we started going to various churches and they sang songs all talking about what they, the people, are going to "get" simply because they claim to be Christians, such as "I'll Fly Away" and "Mansion Over The Hilltop" and many others. The definition is:

HYMN n. noun

  1. A song of praise or thanksgiving to God or a deity.
  2. A song of praise or joy; a paean.

So I consider a hymn to be more like a prayer rather than an expounding on the "crowns" I will eventually receive, and my favorites are "Have Thine Own Way, Lord", I Need Thee Every Hour", "Near The Cross, and "Nearer My God To Thee".

'Not I, but Christ.' (Gal. 2:20)

Not what I am, O Lord, but what Thou art,
That, that alone can be my soul's true rest;
Thy love, not mine, bids fear and doubt depart,
And stills the tempest of my tossing breast.

Chorus:
Thy name is Love! I hear it from Thy Cross:
Thy name is Love! I read it in Thy tomb;
All human love may end in tears and loss,
But this shall light me through time's thickest gloom
.

'Tis what I know of Thee, my Lord and God,
That fills my soul with peace, my lips with song:
Thou art my health, my joy, my staff and rod;
Leaning on Thee, in weakness I am strong.

Chorus:

More of Thyself, O show me, hour by hour,
More of Thy glory, O my God and Lord:
More of Thyself, in all Thy grace and power,
More of Thy love and Truth, Incarnate Word.

Chorus:

(Horatius Bonar, 1864)

Jesus! I am resting, resting in the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, and Thy beauty fills my soul;
For, by Thy transforming power Thou hast made me whole.

Jesus! I am resting, resting in the joy of what thou art;
I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart.

Oh, how great Thy loving-kindness,
vaster, broader than the sea!
Oh, how marvellous Thy goodness,
lavished all on me!

Yes, I rest in Thee, Beloved, know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise, and have made it mine.

Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, I behold Thee as Thou art,
And Thy love so pure, so changeless, satisfies my heart:
Satisfies it's deepest longings, meets, supplies its every need,
Compasseth me round with blessings; Thine is love indeed!

Jesus! I am resting, resting in the joy of what thou art;
I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart.

Ever lift Thy face upon me, as I work and wait for Thee;
Resting 'neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus, earth's dark shadows flee.
Brightness of My Father's glory, sunshine of my Father's face,
Keep me ever trusting, resting; fill me with Thy grace!

Jesus! I am resting, resting in the joy of what thou art;
I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart.

'Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness,
and hath translated us unto the kingdom of His dear Son.'
Col.1:13

Out from the darkness we have been translated
Into the kingdom of God's own dear Son'
He Who the heavens and earth had created
Shed His own blood for the sins we had done.

He has redeemed us, our sins are forgiven:
Now, as His members, One Body are we:
Bondage is past, all our fetters are riven,
None can enslave whom the Son has set free.

Seated in glory, all fulness possessing,
Head of the church, first-born from the dead,
Risen with Him, we inherit all blessing,
Members must share in the life of the Head.

While we were enemies, far from Him straying,
He made the peace through the blood of His Cross,
God's mighty love for the world thus displaying,
Bearing our shame, and redeeming our loss.

Holy, unblemished and purged from sin's leaven,
Now we are reconciled free from all blame:
All things on earth, yea, and all things in heaven
He will yet reconcile: praise to Him Name.

'Being justified by faith,
we have peace with God'

(Romans 5:1)

A mind at perfect peace with God:
Oh! what a word is this!
A sinner reconciled through blood;
This, this indeed is peace.

By nature and by practice far,
How very far from God,
Yet now by grace brought nigh to Him,
Through faith in Jesus' blood.

So near, so very near to God,
I cannot nearer be;
For in the person of His Son,
I am as near as He.

So dear, so very dear to God,
More dear I could not be;
The love wherewith He loves the Son,
Such is His love to me.

Why should I over anxious be,
Since such a God is mine?
He watches o'er me night and day,
And tells me 'thou art mine.'

Catesby Paget

'That ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.'
(Eph. 3:19)

Filled with all fulness, can it be
For Gentile strangers such as we?
We who the paths of sin have trod,
As aliens from the life of God.

Yes, 'tis for us, for Christ has died,
Now quickened, risen, glorified;
Seated with Him at God's right hand;
Complete in Him, by faith we stand.

May the same mighty power to save,
That brought our Saviour from the grave,
Strength to our inward man impart,
that Christ may dwell within our heart.

Then with all saints in every land
We'll in some measure understand
The love of Christ, that shoreless sea,
That saves and keep eternally.

Anon.

Praise His Holy Name!

It's "hjartaborg" but i've only heard it used in this hymn, maybe it was something people said when the hymn was written (around 1200)

I understand Faroese but only when I read it, for me it's like Icelandic with horrible spelling :) But it's hard to understand them when they talk because of their accent, it's easy for some Icelanders but not for me :)

Horatius Bonar was an outstanding writer. He really captured the heartbeat of Christian doctrine from the Scriptures, I think.

Thanks for the other hymns as well, I didn't know all of them.

Blessings.

Kristin: Thanks. In any case, I think Icelandic is rather dynamic anyway, with a tendency to make up words in order to sound really 'indigenous', so I guess it's not unusual that you only ever heard a word having occurred one time only, right?

I think Eivor Palsdottir actually is Faeroese herself, right?

It was a lovely hymn, anyway. (Interesting that its original writer was killed by the bishop!)

Blessings.

I'm now probably about to miss again box of hymns (so sorry for that just-us-2) but I like this old (is it old?) song from Doris Akers so I’ll give it try…

There's a name that's dear to me,
lifted me from misery,
brought me out of sin and shame,
how I love His blessed name.
It's grows sweeter, everyday
Knowing Jesus really pays,
Oh how I love that man,
From Galilee.

Sweet Jesus - fellowship devine
Sweet Jesus - I'm His and He is mine
Sweet Jesus - a precious friend is He
Sweet Jesus.
Whenever I'm in need - oh
Fellowship devine
I'm His and He is mine
A precious friend is He
Whenever I'm in need - oh
How I love this man from Galilee.
