Secular bands in general also tend to get a larger fan base, and bring in more money, work with better equipment, and producers, people with better connections, etc... Look at a band that is decent or even pretty good, and get's signed onto a secular label, and bam, they sound 10x's better with that new source of income and higher level of producers etc...
And still yet, some of them never get all that and still know how to kill it. I think a lot of it is bias. I see it constantly against Christian bands. People say a band is bad because they're Christian. That's all they need to know, they won't even listen.

The only religious music I would listen to would be choirs singing the old hymns (which contain all the great Christian truths), however, if I am feeling a bit down or whatever, I would always listen to secular music to improve my mood. It always works, usually after a short time I feel God, the Holy Spirit's Presence coming into my spirit and mind. 2Kings 3v15

I listen to 98% christian to 2% or less secular, and among that mostly musical without vocals. It has been much more encouraging and uplifting, and the more you get away from secular music the more you begin to notice just how much they are "preaching" to you and affecting your everyday life and emotions. I would highly recommend anyone researching secular music to go here and watch a few clips to see what I mean: Welcome To Good Fight Theater

You are very correct.

I'll be the first one to say that much of the christian music scene is pretty lame...so much of it is wishy washy geared for yer' Grandparents & stay at home Mom's that watch TBN all day.Yet there are a ton of awesome christian bands that never made it mainstream,so therefore most people into the secular stuff never get to hear any of it. I can't tell you how many of my friends over the years I have turned on to christian bands. I've had friends that were so anti-God,yet I'd have something like Believer,Tourniquet,Circle of Dust,Living Sacrifice...(I could go on & on) cranked up..and they'd be "like this is great, who are these guys?"...5 minutes later.."Did they just say something about Jesus???" Then I tell them they're christian & the look of shock & horror on their face is priceless. LOL If you think about it this way too...the sheer amount of secular bands out there, are what in the millions??? Realistically out of all those bands...how many are actually really good/talented to listen to? A few thousand??? Hey,I like both but I still think that if more people heard the good christian bands instead of the melancholy stuff that gets pumped out on christian radio & bookstores because they have all the $$$ for publicity, more people might change their minds in saying that it's mediocre.
This is true. Also what Ugly said about the resources. It is true. If you have ever recorded something in your home and then recorded with someone who is a good sound engineer. Also, there are so many tricks that can be done in the studio. This is what I liked about punk. It was raw. It was not produced. In the underground especially. You may have some sound isolation but in general you do what you do live and it's miced and recorded. If you get into other genres of music. Forget it! It's an auto tune fest. Pitch correction done after the fact. Effects added after the recorded track. etc.....

You hear Joel Osteen say that Jesus didn't come to start a religion. I do like the term, "believer." After all that's what we are and that is the definition of faith.

Lately I like instrumentals. I don´t pay too much attention to the message, but at music. Of course I´m muved by the sound, mainly, and often I´d like I could shut my ears to avoid secular music, particularly salsa music or colombian music, which I dislike.

I tend to like the music itself and I've always been this way. I view the vocals as another instrument. I have noticed that the lyrical content gets through regardless so I do discern in that area.

Amen to that. Personally, I find that the less interference and influence musicians have from the bureaucracy of the industry, the better the quality and more prolific artists are.

I have a serious issue with secular music especially to my song choices. For decades, I can honestly say that I live with it and secular music comforts me every now and then. But when I became I Christian, I fully understand that it was costly to listen to it. To be honest, most of the secular music I listen have very bad lyrics, anti-religion (Christianity in particular), it made me lonely and sad and depressed... Slowly I am dropping listening to secular music (I even switched to a new phone because my previous phone was full of secular songs and has an FM app).

Now, I rarely listen to any kind of music and have a few gospel song selection. Secular music made me depressed, but Christian/gospel songs always lift me up. :)

This should be a poll. This is just me, I used to listen to the Beatles and other bands of that time period because my professor burned those songs on a CD, the sad thing I don't remember the names of the songs because I put the paper that those name s in the recycling, I think. But I digress, when it comes to music, I listen less to it but when I do it is 99.9% Christians and a sliver would be dedicated to other music. I have instrumentals like the unofficial Indiana Jones soundtrack, Star Trek themes excluding Enterprise, etc. The reason I don't listen to secular music, is because when I was addicted to inappropriate stuff, it messed up my life and also I like trance and/or techno music, but listening to it especially parts that sounded like a club, caused me to want to go to my pornographic past, which I don't want to go to. So I will not fault CCM, Casting Crowns, etc. If you don't like them, don't listen to them. God can use any music for his glory, though I am a bit leery of Christian bands that go mainstream, I feel they lose their substance, the audience of one that they are playing for, etc. Again, that is just me. A lot of people like Switchfoot, but I just don't listen to them anymore. I have some of their CDs in CCM and other days, but the newest ones I don't have. God bless.

music is like breathing to me. Since I was a teenager, I have always listened alot to both kinds of music. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong going from listening to back in black, to listening to Amy grant. I was lucky, I did not have parents who thought certain kinds of music would lead me to do the wrong thing, even if it was in the music I would listen to. I have done the same with my children, they have grown up with everything from praise music, to jazz, to some of my fav bands, to sesame street tunes when they were little. I think music is very important, it's huge to preteens and teens. I know alot of parents watch carefully what their kids listen to and I respect that. For me, I like to know what they are listening to by listening to it with them, which sometimes is very painful cause some of it I can't stand. That I kept to myself however. Hope I didn't get to off the subject matter!

Oh dear, it's just that all the " Christian music " people try to fit to what they like that I have heard really is so corny and ,,,, well, rather forced. I don't like it....Trying to call jesus a cool dood, just does not do it for me. A heavy metal Christian band is a nice idea, but we don't hear words in heavy metal, so what is the difference ? It's loud, someone is bellowing and .......................

Because I have lived for 88 years and watched popular music change, it makes me wonder about what each of us really like and what is simply training to like. Most generations like what was popular when they were teens.

When I was a teen my mother would not allow jazz so she could hear it because it made her feel torn inside, she said. I feel the same way when there are loud drums during church service. My grandson feels that there is no worship involved in the music I relate to quiet praise of my Lord. He says they are not excited over the Lord, it is dead worship.

If you study the history of music, the music reflected the times. Simple, quiet music like Handel was from very early times, by the 1920's classical music became almost discordant, while at the same time songs became romantic. How different kinds of music affects us tells a lot about us and also how old we are.

I wonder what we would each like if we heard music for the first time when we were young adults? No training or programming involved.

The church buildings were made for praise music music so that is where i prefer to listen to anything gospel related.
